Fanney Khan Review: Showbiz Through The Eyes Of A Father-Daughter Duo

A Man's dream

A man dreams of how he wants to build his life and career and fails. But the dream doesn't die despite many difficulties. He may want to fulfill it through his children and do whatever it takes to make it possible. But what about the child? Does she/he want to be the same? Quite an old drama but can be dealt with new variations all the same. And one such film is Fanney Khan.

Ex-superstar of Bollywood and international actor Anil Kapoor stars in this musical comedy and sharing the screen space with him is none other than Aishwarya Rai. It is after a long gap of about a decade and a half they stared in a film together. The highly rated Rajkumar Rao joins them to make a trio of the lead actors.

Prashant Kumar aka Fanney Khan was a former singer. He worked part-time for an orchestra when he was young. He wanted to become a singer of the stature of Mohammed Rafi or Kishore Kumar. But familial duties and other circumstance make his dream take a secondary place in his heart.

So, when his daughter was born, he named her Lata Mangeshkar. Lata is an obese girl who insults her father like there is no tomorrow. It is funny that even her mother doesn't chaste her for her behaviour. Lata is a good singer but she is booed and made fun of when she gives stage performances. This makes her father even sadder.

To cope with it, Fanney Khan comes up with an idea and kidnaps the popular singer Baby Singh played by the ever gorgeous Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. This he does with the help of Athir played by Rajkumar Rao. Why Fanney khan kidnapped Baby Singh, how he gets his daughter to be a famous Singer? The answers to these questions form the rest of the story.

A commentary on the showbiz

Fanney Khan rises many questions. It is is an adaptation of the Oscar-nominated Belgian film Everybody's Famous! The film is set in the big bad world of showbiz and it doesn’t cut corners while showing how heartless this world can be. There is even a scene where a top star is asked point-blank whether she provided sexual favors to reach to this high position.

Rajkumar Rao’s manipulative girlfriend leaves him at first instance to advance her career. Aishwarya Rai’s mentor drops hints all the time that he wants to sleep with her. Her manager wants her to choreograph a wardrobe malfunction in order to get higher TRPs. Whether it’s alright to do a compromise for a role or an assignment is earnestly discussed by teenage girls.

Baby Singh is shown to be a friendless and lover-less individual because she can’t trust someone and really doesn’t have the time for a relationship. But she gets attracted to her kidnapper Adhir which is a result of Stockholm Syndrome and it is shown in an effective anner.  At the other end of the spectrum are talented singers like Fanney and his daughter. He couldn’t get a chance at stardom but wants his daughter to shine. But being overweight, she’s body-shamed at every reality show.

It’s pointed out clearly that today, a singer has to be a showstopper as well. Merely having a good voice is a thing of the past. What makes it all believable is that top stars like Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya and Rajkummar are enacting these roles. Top stars in real life and helpless characters. Well! That's where Fanney Khan touches the audience. A stark reality is shown using the top actors and actress.

Inconsistent tone

The movie is not just about the entertainment industry. It just forms the backdrop of Fanney Khan. At its core, Fanney Khan is the relationship between a father and his daughter. It’s not clear why his daughter is so pissed off all the time with Anil or why he takes it without protest. Progressive?

The director did a fantastic job of creating the characters but unfortunately, the setting and the nuances of creating the atmosphere failed miserably. He oscillated between serious drama and ineffective comedy. Logics are left in the open ground for the most part. He should have been consistent in the tone of the film.

The performances

Fanney Khan is a story of music aspirants and singers. But none of the... literally none of the songs except the popular Teri Jaisa Tu Hai, register with us. Same goes for the background score. It is inorganic. The cinematography is superb though. The dance movies created for Aishwarya Rai is brilliant and she did a stunning job. She showed why she is such a top star not just in India but also in the world. Anil Kapoor is a masterclass in the role of Fanney Khan. Rajkumar Rao is ever dependable. The girl who played Khan's daughter Lata Mangeshkar is fabulous.

All in all, barring the inconsistency of tone and occasional hiccough in narration, Fanney Khan is a much-needed relief among the serious films released this week. Top class performances, colorful cinematography and realistic commentary on the showbiz make Fanney Khan a significant film. You can watch it without thinking twice.
