Dear Zindagi is a coming-of-age drama movie that revolves around the life of Kaira. She is a cinematographer, who wants to direct her films. Alia looks cool as Kaira. Her problems begin with Raghuvendra, a film producer, for whom she breaks up with a childhood sweetheart, gets engaged to another woman. She is shown out of her apartment as her landlord wants only married couples. She is not satisfied with the prospects at her work.
Kaira leaves for Goa and has to unwillingly stay with her parents with whom she has issues. She has sleepless nights. She accidentally meets Jug at a conference, who makes her understand herself. She meets a musician Rumi but breaks up before anything serious happens between them. Then, she becomes close to Rumi's younger brother, Kiddo. At a family get-together, Kaira confronts about abandoning her to her grandparents' house.
Kaira explains about the abandonment to Jug. Jug tells Kaira to see her parents as regular people, who make mistakes. Kaira makes efforts of getting close to her family and works on her short film. Kaira expresses that she likes Jug, he says he likes her too but as a patient and not in a romantic way. It is shown that Jug also has real love for Kaira but cannot admit it as he is a therapist.
Kaira finishes her short film on which she has been working for years. At the premiere, her friends, family, and exes cheer her efforts and she meets a furniture dealer. Life goes on.
Dear Zindagi mostly generated positive reviews and was a commercial success. The movie bagged two awards.
