Dangal Review & Rating

We present the content in such a way that we have just come out of the theater and penned out our thoughts fresh. You can enjoy the reviews and relive the moments in a different way. And try to watch the films like they're new, once again.

Premise

The sprts movie is a biopic of renowned sportsman Mahavir Singh Phogat, and his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. The film revolves around an Indian wrestler from Haryana fighting against all the odds to make his daughters wrestling champions.

Story

Mahavir Singh Phogat played by Aamir Khan is a former wrestler and the story revolves around him and his two daughters Geeta and Babita. Mahavir was a national level wrestling player residing in Balali but had to give up on his dream of winning the Gold medal for India for the sake of employment. Dejected, he vows that his unborn son will. But as destiny has it, Mahavir will have four daughters. He almost gives up all his hopes until one day daughters Geeta and Babita come home after beating up two boys in response to derogatory comments. He realizes his daughters can bring medals for the country and begins coaching them beating all the odds.

Initially, Geeta and Babita were not on the same page with their father. They would call it their father's 'madness' just like their neighbors. However, they get a reality check from one of their friends who became a victim of child marriage. Now determined and dedicated, Geeta and Babita take wrestling training at their father's handmade 'akhra'.

Next, Mahavir plans to make his children face the competition. But, there were hardly any female wrestlers to fight with. Mahavir decided to make them fight with young male wrestlers. Again, he stood strong against the objections and win this war. Geeta and Babita took part in State Level Championship and win.

Geeta, now grown-up went on to join the sports academy in Delhi where he starts enjoying her new lifestyle. Her new life being strikingly different from his father's training and teaching, create a distance between father and daughter. Their conflict became evident over a debate on the new style of wrestling and things went ugly. However, things started to change for Mahavir and his daughters when they make it to the national level championship. Geeta seeks support from her father.

Performances

Dangal is one of the best-enacted films ever made in Bollywood. Aamir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat is phenomenal. The perfectionist has gained weight for his role and his execution of a now overweight ex sportsperson is nothing less than perfect. His body language and facial expression in the scene where he has a Wrestling challenge with Geeta will go in the history of Indian cinema. As young Geeta Zaira Wasim proved her metal. Fatima Sana Seikh as grown-up Geeta did well but Sanaya Malhotra, despite having a small role as Babita grabs attention.

Direction and Other Aspects

One of the strongest aspect of Dangal is its writing. Director Nitesh Tiwari, along with Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain and Nikhil Mehrotra managed to make it an intriguing journey even though the climax was obvious. They managed to add some hilarious moments even in the serious moments and some memorable father-daughter scenes. They even added a little twist at the climax which was quite unexpected and pleasant at the same time.

The director took the risk of taking the girls to take the limelight keeping Aamir Khan's overwhelming presence far from where the actions were taking place in the most important scene. Not something we get to see in Bollywood but it surely paid off. Music director Pritam and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya's songs fit the film's flow to the T.

Trivia

Aamir Khan gained 28 kg. for then and then lost 25 kg. in 20 weeks to portray the young Mahavir Singh Phogat.

Dangal is the highest-grossing Indian movie in the history of Indian films. It surpassed the record of Bahubali 2 after it became a blockbuster in China making more than 2000 crores.

The film was shot in reverse. Aamir Khan plays the older version of his character before and shot young Mahavir at the end.

Salman Khan said it's better than his own movie Sultan.

Take Away

Aamir Khan's flawless performance to its inspiring story, everything about Dangal was a takeaway. The film is not going to oblivion anytime soon.

Must Watch, Violence as a form of entertainment. It gives us reason enough to believe in emotions, parenting - I completely realized my mothers way of parenting after watching this movie. It took me to my childhood memories. At the beginning, I thought it is a negative for girls. After some time realized that it is a positive for girls but daddy oriented but at the end I completely realized that it is an Inspiration movie for all Indian children and parents. Appreciations to the director and writers to peppered with humour and several impressive father-daughter emotions all through. After Geetha fails in International, Babitha's words "Papa hey app ka pass" Fantastic scene. Mahavir, wife, Geetha, Babitha and the close cousin all the actors including child and senior actors acted very well.
