Chekka Chivantha Vaanam is the story of the three sons of a mafia don, from who has established his business in several places in the world including India, who fight for the throne after their father's death. The kingpin is Senapathi aka Sena. The elder son, Varadharajan aka Varadhan is a hot-headed person who oversees the business in and around Chennai by being the right hand to his father.
One day, Senapathi was attacked by some rival men who disguised themselves as policemen when he goes to a temple with his wife. Sena escapes with little minor injuries but his sons get alerted and they join forces to find the person who orchestrated the attack. The second son is Thyagaraja aka Thyagu who oversees the business in UAE and the youngest son Ethirajen aka Ethi who looks after the operations in Serbia returns to India.
Varadhan takes the help of his friend, a police inspector, Rasool Ebrahim. Rasool is suspended very recently. Both of them decide it is Chinnappadasan aka Chinnappa, a rival don, who is behind the attack on their father. But he denies doing it. Later, Senapathi reveals to his wife that it is one among his sons who was behind the attack on his life. Who is the man behind the attack on Senapathi and how the culprit is found by the rest of the brothers, and who ends up with the throne form the rest of the story.
Chekka Chivantha Vaanam received generally positive reviews from the critics stating that Mani Ratnam is back to form with a bang. The performances of the lead actors, Arvind Swami, Simbu, Arun Vijay, and Vijay Sethupathi are hailed as some of the best performances in recent memory. The movie went on to become a blockbuster and the highest grossing movie in Mani Ratnam's career.
