Chhaya O Chhobi Review & Rating|
The movie starts with the sound of a train which itself brings a feel and the view of beautiful mountains adds to the beautification of the movie. There are in total three songs and all the songs are good and melodious and the credit goes to the Indradeep Dasgupta. Altogether the movie is good and can be called a one time watch for all.
Abir Chatterjee has done justice to his character, still Koel looked more convincing in her portrayal of a Superstar. Although in the emotional scenes, her accent and acting skills might be questionable. Ritwik, as a consistent natural actor should be, is great and fits the character of the driver. Barun Chanda, who potrayed the role of Churni's father in the Movie, was overqualified for the role and looked way more convincing as an NRI than Churni in terms of his perfect accent and polished behaviors. Churni is a Director cum actor in real life also, so the role of Maya might just had been written for her. Priyanka's character had a lot of shades and she did just fine in both glamorous and de-glam looks.
While the first half of the film suffers from sloth progression, things become a tad better in the second half. The plot is skillfully manipulated and comes to a good make-believe end. With immaculate cinematography by Gopi Bhagat, we see a glimpse of picturesque north Bengal. However, the music fails to impress.

The Film name "Chhaya O Chhabi" is derived from the term "ChhayaChhabi" which is the bengali term for "Cinema". This already gives the hint to audience that the movie will show something about the Bengali film industry. Well, it is a movie within a movie, where NRI Documentary film-maker Maya( Churni Ganguly) comes to India to fulfill her Grandmother's dream of seeing her directing a Bengali Movie. She castes two suparstars- Arindam(Abir Chatterjee) as her lead male and Rai(Koel Mullick) as her lead female in the movie. Arindam and Rai are engaged in real life and Arindam treats this film as a pre-wedding honeymoon trip. There is also a third character in the film-Moumita/Mita (Prianka Chakraborty) who is a newcomer in Tollywood, mainly a television actress and is playing a crucial role in Maya's Film. The shoot starts in Darjeeling where Rai spent her early childhood days as she was studying in a convent school there. Things take a dramatic turn when Rai disappears from the film set only with her Driver Jeetu (Ritwik Chakraborty). However, The shooting unit manages to continue to shoot for two days while Rai and Jeetu grow a bonding amidst the serenity of Dooars. After two days shoot, Rai returns and the Romantic Movie becomes a semi-thrillers when Rai starts finding things related to her school days in her room and Mita's new iphone gets stolen from film set. In stead of a few unexpected developments, the ending of the movie is a bit predictable and unnecessarily prolonged.

Churni is a Director cum actor in real life also, so the role of Maya might just had been written for her. To talk about the location, Darjeeling has always been one of the favorite spots of the directors for its beautiful landscapes. Koushik also explored it but not to the fullest. The story is basically a romantic one, but maintaining the timeline as shown in the movie (December 2016) , effects of demonetization on Tollywood industry was also used in the movie quite cleverly as a part of the main plot. Moreover, a fighting scene between Abir and Priyanka regarding the 'Macha (Commercial Entertainment Stage in village/townships where Stars Perform and Earn) Shows' of Tolly stars in Winter, actually gives a wholly different reason of popularity of Tolly Stars in village/townshps. The central charecter's name-" Arindam" obviously remind any movie lover of Uttamkumar's iconic charecter in Satyajit Ray's "Nayak" but the glamour of Abir does not come even close to Mahanayak. The School is picturesque and scenes of Koel with her teacher there are also well filmed. In terms of Camera, there a a few great scenes like the top shot of the staircase where the trolley of Maya's Shooting unit can be seen at the end of the staircase or the opening scene of the movie with glimpses of Darjeeling Mal with an Amazing soundscape. Indradip Dasgupta's Music is mostly soothing, but not memorable, especially the beginning song which attempted but could not properly portray Koel as a moody yet simple heroine. There is also the mention of Hitchcock's "The Lady Vanishes" before the interval in an attempt of a tribute to the 1938 classic. But the bonfire song in voice of Shreya Ghosal in lip of Koel, that too with a full orchestra playing in the background, seems way too commercial for a brilliant Director cum story-writer like Koushik Ganguly. With a better editing, the movie could have been a 7.5 out of 10, but as of now 6.5 can be the most I can give.
Directed by Kaushik Ganguly, 'Chhaya O Chhobi' is a film inside the film where the story unfolds on the set of a film. The film starts when Maya starts shooting her new film with superstar Arindom and Rai Chatterjee, who are engaged in real life as well. The team starts shooting in Darjeeling. Everything was going well until Rai went missing. She ends up in the jungle along with her driver Jeetu.
The film is an essential love story which also depicts the life of the cast and crew members behind the screen. Things that might work in favor of the film are,
- Koel Mallick is making a comeback after 2 years with this film. No wonder her fans will be eager to watch the film.
- After back to back hits like 'Bishorjon' and 'Meghnadbodh Rohosyo,' this is Abir Chatterjee's third release in this year. Chances are the film will also find favor of his fans.
- After winning National Award for 'Bishorjon', the viewers are now keen to watch Kaushik Ganguly's next venture which has a different plot altogether.
- Abir and Kaushik Ganguly as the actor-director pair is a plus.
- Ritwick Chakraborty's last two films in this year (Bibaho Diaries and Maacher Jhol) have done well at the box-office.
