Chanakyathanthram Review & Rating
Touted to be an investigative thriller inspired by the famous Chanaya stories, Chanakyathanthram is Malayalam thriller movie featuring Unni Mukundan, Anoop Menon, Sshivada, Shruti Ramachandran and Sai Kumar among others. The movie marks Kannan Thamarakulam's next venture after the insipid comedy thriller Achayans which failed to make an impact at the box office and is expected to give a breakthrough for the director as well as its lead actor Unni Mukundan. But does it? Read Chanakyathanthram review below.
Chanakyathanthram opens with a tensed up accident sequence. Soon the protagonist Arjun played by Unni Mukundan is established. Arjun is a brilliant young man with a passion for criminology. He joins a private detective agency and handles his assignments ably and quite successfully. During one of his investigations, he meets Andrea (Shruti) whom he falls in love with. Soon to his surprise, Arjun finds out that his next assignment involves Andrea. Things become more complicated when he realizes his lady boss (Sshivada) is wooing him and soon enough himself caught in the snare.
Unni Mukundan pulls his character as intelligent and cunning detective quite convincingly. The actor shines in the different get-ups he flaunts as part of investigations. While rest of the cast puts up a spectacular show, matching Unni Mukundan in performance, Anoop Menon comes across as slightly disappointing. His character which is central to the plot is quite similar to the characters the actor has donned in the past and fails to create the desired impact.
Kannan Thamarakulam has succeeded in bringing the best out of his actors this time. But despite that Chanakyathanthram falls flat as an action thriller. The background score composed by Shaan Rahman sticks out from the total mood of the film. While the cinematography, dialogues and some of the sequences are quite engaging. In short, Chankyathanthram could be a breakthrough for neither Kannan Thamarakkulam nor Unni Mukundan. But it certainly a movie that will be marked in the career of both the actor and the director.
Final Word: Unni Mukundan's Chanakyathanthram is an engaging film which offers a little suspense and occasional comedy. A perfect one time watch.
