Bharat tells the story of a son who stood up to fulfill the promise he had given to his father that he would look after his family and stay united until the end. Bharat and his family move to reach India before it is too late during the partition of the country. His family consists of his father Gautam, mother Janaki, and siblings Mehek, Gudia, and Chote.
At the time of boarding India-bound train, Bharat loses his sister Gudia. His father stays back to search for Gudia and makes Bharat promise to keep the family united and that he would one day come to meet them. Likewise, Bharat becomes the breadwinner of his family and looks after his mother and the rest of the siblings. They grow up at his aunt's who has an imported goods store.
Bharat strikes a friendship with Vilayti Khan, a neighboring kid of his age and after a few odd jobs, joins a circus company. he wins the admiration of the audience for his daredevilry but comes out of it when children try to imitate his feats and face danger. He then goes to the gulf when the oil's discovered.
There he meets Kumud Raina with whom he slowly falls in love. But he restrains from expressing his feelings as he has his promise to keep. He survives a mining accident and when Kumud expresses her wish to marry him, he tells her of what he thinks and they remain friends. After his visa expires, Bharat returns to India. What happens to Bharat and his love? How and if he could meet his lost sister and father again? The answers to all these questions form the rest of the story.
Bharat received mixed to positive reviews from the critics but turned out a big hit at the box office. Salman Khan becomes the Indian actor with the most number of 200 crore club films and received critical praise for his restrained performance. Katrina kaif is praised for performance as Kumud Raina, a woman of independent will. Bharat went on to become the biggest opener in Salman Khan's career with about 42.45 cr. It also stood out as Pycker India's Best Movie of the Week.
