Batti Gul Meter Chalu is the story about the plight of common people because of electricity problems. It starts as the story of three childhood friends Sushil Kumar aka SK, Sundar Mohan Tripathi aka Tripathi, and Lalita Nautiya aka Nauti. But when tragedy strikes, one of them has to stand up for the victim.
SK is a selfish man. He does anything for his comforts and development. Nauti is a fashion designer with a knack for ludicrous designs. Tripathi is an upright man. There is a love triangle that involves our protagonists where Nauti wants to check which one of her two friends is the perfect match for her life. For that, she tests each of SK and Tripathi for a week. One fine day, SK finds Nauti and Tripathi when they are smooching. This makes his heart burn and distances himself from them.
Tripathi makes his living by means of a printing press. One day he gets his electricity bill to the extent of Ra. 1.5 lakhs. It grows exponentially and suddenly he is in the debt of the power company for an amount of Rs. 54 lakhs. After failing to fight the company, and unable to get SK's help (he is a lawyer who loves to make quick money with out of the court settlements), Tripathi commits suicide. This brings change in SK, who used to blackmail local businessmen for his gain. He decides to fight for the justice for his dead friend. How he brings justice, and how the electricity companies are taught a lesson form the rest of the story.
