Balloon Review & Rating|
Balloon has been one of the most awaited Tamil movies of the year, thanks to the on-screen chemistry of the lead pair Jai and Anjali who teamed up for this film once again. Directed by Sinish, Balloon has hit the screens today amidst decent buzz and positive pre-release vibes. The quirky trailer of the film has generated a lot of expectations on the movie. Will the movie join the super hits list of Kollywood and give a fitting end to 2017 which has been a good year for the Tamil cinema or will it join the list of cliched horror comedies? Let's find it out in Balloon movie review below:
Balloon movie starts off with an aspiring filmmaker Jeevanandham (played by Jai) moving out to a haunted house in Ooty after being advised by the producer to make a horror comedy. He is accompanied by his wife Jaqueline (played by Anjali), his friends (played by Yogi Babu and Karthik Yogi) and his nephew Pappu (played by master Rishi). Later some awkward things start to happen in the house only to reveal that one of them is haunted by a ghost. Things get worse when they come to know that Jeevanandham has a connection with that house in the past. How things unfold from there on forms the rest of the story.
Jai gives out an impressive performance in two diverse roles - Jeevanandham and Charlie. He has finally come out from those stereotype house next door guy roles and gives a striking performance. Anjali is okay in her role. The surprise package of the film is Yogi Babu who is on fire in this film. His quirky one-liners in the first half are super entertaining and provide the comic relief for the audience. He is the major highlight of the film and without him, this film would've been a strictly average kind of horror comedy. Janani Iyer gets an author-backed role in the flashback episode and she gives a commendable performance as Shenbagavalli. The kids Monika and Rishi too performed well. The antagonists (Nagineedu and gang) were usual in their roles.
Balloon is a film which has some solid work from the technical team that includes some talented technicians like Saravanan, Ruben, Dhilip Subbarayan and of course Yuvan Shankar Raja. Balloon stands as a solid example of teamwork and how it can take a movie to next level. Saravanan's camerawork is superb and so was the artwork from Shakthi Venkatraju who designed the house set superbly. Stunts composed by Dhilip Subbarayan are decent. Balloon works because of the scary elements and Yuvan's background score plays a crucial role here. Though there is nothing much to say about the songs, his background score definitely helps the film. The sound design of the film too is very good and deserves a special mention. Production values of 70Mm entertainments banner are adequate. Coming to director Sinish, he does a fantastic job with the film and makes an impressive debut. Right from the title cards he starts to amaze you with the clarity he has on this subject. During the title cards itself he admits that Balloon is inspired from films like The Conjuring and IT which avoids the unnecessary comparisons. He has wsritten a simple plot with a good flashback and cleverly added horror and comedy elements to deliver a neat horror comedy without a cliched narration. Though the film gets predictable at times, it is the entertainment quotient that keeps the movie going.
Verdict: Entertaining Horror Comedy - Worth Watching!

What To Expect?
- Good Dose Of Humour and Horror
The 2-minute trailer for the film itself was very much entertaining with lots of comedy and we can expect more from the film. The film boasts of comedians like Yogi Babu who can provide ample entertainment. Keeping the comedy aside, the film seems to have a good dose of Horror as well. We can expect a package of good comedy and horror in this film. Most of the films go wrong in dealing with the horror scenes and let's hope that this film doesn't join that list.
- 100% Entertainment
The trailer for the film is one of the best ones of Tamil cinema in the recent times and it promises of a well-made horror comedy. Balloon movie seems to have all the required elements to make a perfect and entertaining horror comedy. The references of Oviya, Ajith, and Vijay in the trailer are hilarious and so were the glimpses of that flashback episode. If the director Sinish becomes successful in presenting something similar he has shown in the trailer, we can say the film is a good horror comedy.
- Superb Performances
