Daas Dev Review & Rating|
Daas Dev is the latest film by director Sudhir Mishra, who is making a comeback to filmmaking after five years. This modern retelling of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Devdas is also inspired by William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and combines the two stories. The movie stars Rahul Bhat as Dev, Richa Chaddha as Paro and Aditi Rao Hydari as Chandni. It also stars experienced actors like Saurabh Shukla, Vipin Sharma, Vineet Kumar Singh and a cameo from Anurag Kashyap.
The film begins with the death of a powerful politician (Anurag Kashyap), who is the father of Dev. Dev then gets addicted to alcohol and gets involved in the ruthless world of politics where has to take over his father. The whole story is narrated by Aditi Rao Hydari and is a convoluted tale of romance and politics all combined together.
Rahul Bhat, who plays the titular character, has a lot of scope to show off his acting skills and he does a half decent job at that. But Rahul lacks the persona and the screen presence to pull off a character that has been played by the best of Bollywood like Dilip Kumar, Shahrukh Khan, or even Abhay Deol in the most recent of the retellings. The two female leads, Richa Chaddha and Aditi Rao Hydari perform the best with what they have and though a lot of importance has been given to the character of Paro, Chandramukhi has been reduced to a mere spectator to the story and has no impact on it.
Sudhir Mishra’s direction is ambitious where politics take the center stage in this story instead of romance. He has given the story a reverse effect, where instead of succumbing to the circumstances, the character makes the best of it. But he still uses some of his old techniques and fails to catch up with modern filmmaking, making this one look bland. The screenplay by Sudhir Mishra and Jaydeep Sarka is not as tight as it should have been.
The songs in the film are based on the poetry written by Bulle Shah, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Munir Niazi and Swanand Kirkire and give a powerful feel to the film. While editor Archit Rastogi and director of photography Sachin K. Krishn save the film with their impeccable talent and give a unique dim lighted feel to the film.
Verdict: Daas Dev is successful in recreating the story of Devdas in its own way, but the performances could have been better. Watch it if you're a fan of the director or the story.

What to expect from Daas Dev?
Sudhir Mishra, who is most popularly known for writing the screenplay of the cult classic film Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, has directed many successful films like Chameli, Khoya Khoya Chand, and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi. The director took inspiration from the novel Devdas and the Shakespeare novel Hamlet to make this modern film which has hints of both the books in it. This experiment might just work for him and make the film a hit.
Apart from the very talented lead cast of Rahul Bhat, Aditi Rao Hydari and Richa Chaddha, the film also boasts of a supporting cast that consists of many experienced and critically acclaimed actors like Saurabh Shukla, Vineet Kumar Singh and Deepraj Rana. Apart from this, the film also features a cameo by director Anurag Kashyap, who had directed Dev D, another retelling of the story of Devdas.
The music of the film that has been released online has been successful to connect with the audience and is going strong on the music charts. Songs like Sehmi Hai Dhadkan by Atif Aslam and Azaad Kar by Swanand Kirkere are being appreciated and seem to go well with the plot and feel of the film.
Director Sudhir Mishra has come up with a new concept with the film Daas Dev, in which he has combined a romantic love story with a story of political corruption and greed. Indian cinema has not seen this mix in a long time and this might work in favor of the film as the film viewers are always looking for a fresh and new concept.
