Arjun Patiala Review: Diljit Dosanjh Is Wasted In A Bad Film
The premise
Spoof comedies are like a double-edged sword. Works in both ways and hurts all the same. Diljit Dosanjh starrer Arjun Patiala started as a spoof and satirical take on police action-comedy genre the sort Rohit Shetty made popular. The Rohit Jugraj directorial is also set in a fictional town where our hero is all sorts of heroic albeit in a goofy manner.
Arjun Patiala
Arjun Patiala of Ferozepur in Punjab promises the people of the worn that he will be with them always. Arjun Patiala is Amman of action and always value his three values - women, whisky, and work. It's the work that suffers the most because of his antics. He has a sidekick just like a hero of this sort should have.
In the twin is a reporter Ritu Randhawa and her pass time is reporting about the goons of the town. There's a mandatory love track between out Arjun and this Ritu. Apart from these are the baddies and one among them is MLA Prapti Makkad. She has control over all the real estate activities of the area. And then finally there is Skill, a comedic goon. All these characters form part of a narrative constructed by a writer who likes to break the fourth wall.
Writing and direction
By its scheme, Arjun Patiala follows the template of a masala film but in a lighter vein and as described by the scribe as a low-budget version of the said films. The writing which needs to be creative is just trigger happy like the criminals in the film. Scene after scene comes and goes but not one makes an impact. There are few laugh out loud moments and a sparkling cameo by Sunny Leone. Except for these, it's a bore-fest. The less we talk about the screenplay the better. The direction is pathetic.
The performances
Diljit Dosanjh who last appeared in a Bollywood film 2018, Soorma - an excellent biopic, is wasted in an unnecessary film. He did try to put up a comedic act but is grossly ineffective. Kriti Damon who has built an impressive resume with films like Bareilly's Ki Burfi has nothing to do in this film than going through poses and mouth dialogues which are thought of as punches.
It is Varun Sharma as Onida Singh who makes a mark in this film. He tried his best to make the comedy tick and his character has a proper back story albeit a comedic one. A man with multiple love failures and finally settles down with a buffalo. Sunny Leone has an item number which is mediocre.
The crew
The music of the film is cheesy. The songs are tasteless and the background score is bad. The cinematography is decidedly amateurish. The editor seems to have gone on an extended holiday. There's nothing to write about the production design and the film shouldn't have existed in the first place. So, no comment about production values.
Finally
Arjun Patiala is a film which doesn't have single merit to warrant watching in the theatres. A highly talented cast is wasted in a forgettable film. Better stay away from it.
Positives
- We have a choice not to go to the film

- The film exists in the first place
