Super Deluxe Review: Savor The Second Wonder From Thiagarajan Kumararaja
Super Deluxe is not a movie you encounter every other weekend in theatres. Not even once a month or year affair. If you want to watch a similarly great quirky film with strong and deep philosophical undertones masked with sex black humor, you have to travel back at least to 8 years back when Aaranya Kaandam released.
Yes. The same man Thiagarajan Kumararaja comes up with Super Deluxe which is an exclusive ride into the world of Shilpa, Mugil, Vembu, Leela, and Arputham. An anthology film with a difference. Not an interconnected story of different people whose stories run in parallel nor is it a succession of short films directed by multiple directors stitched together.
The strength of Super Deluxe is its writing. Written by four filmmakers including Thiagarajan Kumararaja, it blurs the lines between what is genres. Acclaimed director Mysskin also has a hand in the writing of the film and we cannot for sure say who wrote which part of the film. Let's dive into Super Deluxe review to get an idea of the head and tail of the film.
The movie has four threads. One runs with Samantha and Fahaadh Faasil who is a couple bonded by a marriage of convenience. No. This film is not a reference to Vishwaroopam. They have to dispose of a dead body. There is a hint of an extra-marital affair for Samantha's Vembu. Next, we have Shilpa played by the extraordinarily brilliant Vijay Sethupathi. She is a transgender with some existential questions. She comes back to her family for the sake of... her son.
The third thread concerns that of Arputham, a tsunami survivor. He was a believer and now has a new God. Alongside him is Leela, a porn star played by the evergreen Ramya Krishnan in the most challenging role in her career yet. The fourth thread concerns that of a set of sex-deprived youngsters who are in search of... Well! Not revealing as its a spoiler.
How all these four threads are interconnected and how their lives end up by the end of the film (it is for this we watch movies, right?) is all the film Super Deluxe about. It has commentary on various social issues and deep philosophical questions about morals and life's existence itself.
Wonderful writing and exemplary direction
The writing of the film is wickedly good. It is as disgusting as it is pure fun watching this genre-bender and genre mashup. As with Aaranya Kaandam, there are a lot of cinematic references in Super Deluxe right from one more Baasha moment for an important character to naming the one Manickam and the song I am a Disco Dancer plays in the opening scene where a character is seeking sexual pleasure with all the characteristic creeks and sounds hinting at the act. The camera also pans out showing each and every detail of that room.
The characterizations are done well. Vijay Sethupathi's Shilpa is one of the best and honest portrayals of transgenders in Tamil Cinema. Her character is both strong and vulnerable. You have to watch the interaction between her and Mysskin's Arputham. A treat for cinema lovers. Samantha's Vaembu is her most explosive role. Nobody in their right minds conjures up a character like this for her. Of course, unless it is Thiagarajan Kumararaja. But there is a Myskinish touch in her role.
Fahaadh Faasil makes an impact on the proceedings with his intense but understated performance. It is said by the director that he had accepted the role over a telephonic conversation. How much he was impressed by the film and the role he has to play can be understood from this.
Of course, Ramya Krishnan is not just eye candy. Of course, you'll bet she is not. The arc of her role makes your eyes wet at one moment. The three youngsters who played the roles in the fourth thread are terrific. Rest of the actors who played other roles are impactful too.
Keep your eyes open for...
Some of the stand out moments in the movie are:
1. Shilpa and Arputham's interaction
2. Attack on Shilpa in the police station
3. Showing how transgenders earn money by clapping and the immediate dialogue Ae...super pa nee
4. Manickam's transformation
5. Arputham and Leela's scenes
6. Vembu's expressions when she and Mugil discovers something
7. Arputham creates his own Bible and he titles it... Anjathey Nambu
These are like the seven wonders in the film. Of course, there are many more standout moments in the film and this reviewer could remember only these while writing this piece.
Vijay Sethupathi reaches new heights with this film. This is another 40-minute role where he makes a stellar contribution to the rest of the film. Samantha surpassed her previous best with Vembu in Super Deluxe. She can frame Vembu's photos in her trophy collection. For Ramya Krishnan, Leela may not be her best role but she can be thankful that she need not have to reenact another would be Sivagami. Mysskin! Man! He is a gold mine in Tamil Cinema and everyone need to exploit the writer and actor in him.
Yuvan Shankar Raja's score and the usage of various tracks to good effect needs special mention. The cinematography by P. S. Vinod and Nirav Shah is crookedly great. Sathyaraj Natarajan's editing work for this film is easily the best in an Indian film this year till now. The production design is detail rich and the production values are good.
Super Deluxe is once in a decade film which is like a feast to all movie lovers. It may not be for everyone (and it is rightfully certified A by the CBFC) but those who love Cinema as is must not miss it. We may have to wait another decade for Kumararaja to come up with his next film. Till then we have to savor Aaranya Kaandam and Super Deluxe er... Aneethi Kathaigal.
- Thiagarajan Kumararaja
- The ensemble cast lead by Vijay Sethupathi
- The cinematic experience
- Podaa (say this to anyone who asks about the negatives in this film)
Pycker Rating: 3.75 out of 5
Tailpiece: Watch it in theatres with your movie buff friends for maximum impact. You can watch it multiple times anyway.

What is Super Deluxe About?
Super Deluxe is a hodgepodge of emotions as never experienced before. As evidenced by the trailer, the movie is going to be as quirky as possible with a different style of making. Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi will be seen in the role of a transgender woman. Senior actress Ramya Krishnan plays the role of a porn star. And the movie has Samantha in a role very unlike of what she generally portrays and then there is Malayalam star hero Fahaadh Faasil. As if these are not enough, Thiagarajan Kumararaja roped in maverick filmmaker Mysskin who also co-wrote the screenplay.
With the trailer and other promo materials, the makers presented the movie as a quirky ride. And with such a star cast, the interest on the film expectedly shoot up. The talk, and various rumors suggesting that certain scenes took hundreds of takes to perfect them and experienced and versatile artists like Ramya Krishnan and Vijay Sethupathi eating up multiple takes all added to the hype. The movie is the second feature film of director Thiagarajan Kumararaja after Aaranyakaandam.
Super Deluxe Promises
Eerie, quirky, and Aneethi Kathaigal
Just remember how the trailer of the movie panned out. It describes an eerie situation. Imagine being chased down by a tiger and you run to save your life but falls down a cliff. But in the immediate vicinity of the cliff are trees and vines. You grip a vine to save yourself from falling down. On the top is the tiger waiting to feast on you and below is a bottomless pit. And then you notice you're being squeezed out of your breath.
What you thought of as a vine is not a vine at all but a python which is slowly coiling you. Just imagine the situation. Isn't it certain death? Then the narrator (most probably Vijay Sethupathi) asks you to imagine a honeycomb just above you and a drop of honey falls on the sides of your lips. The narrator further asks you to think about the situation. What if the man in such a perilous situation leaves aside all his fears and just stretches his tongue out and licks honey and forget the dangers?
And it is Super Deluxe. The slow burning of the initial narration to the relentless pacing of the narration midway through made the audience go gaga over the trailer. Super Deluxe is turning out to be an essential watch.
The ensemble cast
Vijay Sethupathi as Shilpa. Ramya Krishnan as Leela, Fahaadh Faasil as Mugil, Samantha Akkineni as Vaembu, and Mysskin as Arputham. It is a dream cast in any other film and in the hands of the creative genius Thiagarajan Kumararaja, they have become storytelling landscapes. They are not separate from the characters they play. They are the characters. As Vijay Sethupathi himself said, the characters have become the friends of the actors. Intriguing is a small word.
Those who watched Aaranyakaandam craved for the next film by Thiagarajan Kumararaja. It was 8 years ago that highly acclaimed film was released. Now the wait seems worth it. He has come up again with an innovative and weird story and joined hands with fellow filmmakers Nalan Kumarasamy, Neelan, and Mysskin for the screenplay of the movie.
P. S. Vinod and Nirav Shah handled the cinematography and the atmosphere depicted is a world unto itself in the few promo materials we have come across. Yvan Shankar Raja's musical score has an innovative touch to it. The making team of Kino Fist, East-West Dream works Entertainment and Alchemy vision Workz has left no stone unturned to promote the film and the movie appears to be well-made.
