Alludu Adhurs (2021) Review & Rating

Alludu Adhurs Review: Not Unbearably Bad, Nor Is It Good Enough

The prologue

Director Santhosh Srinivas has scored a big hit in the form of Kandireega when Srinu Vaitla was one of the top directors and every top hero wished to work with him. He used Srinu Vaitla formula successfully. Bellamkonda Sai Srinivas made his debut long after Srinu Vaitla delivered his last hit. By the time he scored his first outright hit - Rakshasudu, Srinu Vaitla nearly faded away. And Santhosh Srinivas' sole hit is Kandireega.

Bellamkonda Sai Srinivas made his debut long after Srinu Vaitla delivered his lady hit. By the time he scored his first outright hit - Rakshasudu, Srinu Vaitla nearly faded away. And Santhosh Srinivas' sole hit is Kandireega.

You got it right

If you read this paragraph, you'll understand what you'll be served when you visit the theatres that're showing Alludu Adhurs. Same old fare. Sans the old great comedians like M. S. Narayana, Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam, and Brahmanandam who are masters of the genre. They used to take the comedy to the next level. The idea behind the setpieces was enough for them. Rest they could improvise. Unfortunately, the genre is now out of favour. And there are no such actors except Brahmi who's not doing films like he used to do.

Predictable even for amnesiacs

So, what's in store? Hero falls in love with the heroine as we have seen in millions of films. Her father is Prakash Raj. we have seen in dozens of films. Prakash as his usual self hates love and love marriages as much as Chris Nolan heroes hate to have heartful laugh. There's one villain played by a certain Sonu Sood who's so powerful and mean... like until the main story starts. Btw, same is the case with Prakash Raj.

In the second half all these guys join the fun fest in someone's house (usually villain's). Some episodic confusion comedy. In between a few action scenes so that our Bellamkonda hero can flex his muscles. A couple of irritatingly routine numbers composed by you know who! Heroines add oomph factors. That's why Nabha Natesh is selected. And boy! She's doesn't disappoint.

So, we all know how the film starts. What the story is. And how the film ends. Now decide if you want to watch it.

Performances

Bellamkonda Srinivas did what he is known to do. Dances energetically and fights. Sonu Sood got morre response (whistles and boots) from the audience pertaining to the respect, well deserved, he earned through his work during the lockdown. Nabha Natesh is a charmer as always. Even when given weakest of the roles, she can turn the tables and deliver a good performance. Since iSmart Shankar, she upped her glamour game. Highlight of the film.

The movie gives one last glimpse of the well known character artiste and twisted comedian - Jayaprakash Reddy aka JP. He's good. The last of the golden generation of Telugu comedians is gone now. Vanished into thin air. Rest of the others just go through motions and fill the screen.

The crew

There's nothing to write about the writing of the film. The direction would be termed slick had this film been made in some... like... 2003. The music is a big disappoint. The background score is bearable. The cinematography is another biggest highlight of this forgettable venture. Chota K. Naidu kept the visuals vibrant and full of life. The less we talk about the editing the better. The art department did a fine job. Production values are decent.

Finally

Remaking one's own movies is an art and not everyone can succeed. But the original itself wasn't a classic or a proper decently new concept. A rehash of a successful formula which was already on its death bed. Santhosh Srinivas' who was a fine cinematographer must come out if this rut with a new or original idea. Else... I don't want to spoil anyone's festival. Just lamenting why Telugu Cinema is still serving such lacklustre stuff.

Rating: Ask Kusal Mendis ;-)

Note: Review is based on merits of storytelling, direction, performances, and the like. If you can take the routinish comedy and all such stuff or longing for Srinu Vaitla kind of films, you can give it a try. Not really unbearable. Trust me.
