102 Not Out Review & Rating|
102 Not Out begins with a 2D animation that depicts the city of Mumbai, this animated sequence sets the tone for the film and then the main characters of Datattraya Vakharia (Amitabh Bachchan), his son Babulal (Rishi Kapoor) and the local medical delivery guy Dhiru (Jimit Trivedi) are introduced. Dattatreya is a 102-year-old man who lives life to the fullest and wants to be the oldest living man in the world. His son, on the other hand, is around 75 years old and has given up on life and is usually grumpy and gloomy all the time. This is when Datattraya decides to become the world’s first father to send his son to an old age home.
Babulal, of course, does not want to go so his father sets up a bunch of conditions if he wants to stay in this house. Trying to keep up with these conditions, Babulal usually changes his outlook on life and become happier day by day. The conversations between the three major characters are lovely to watch and bring a smile to your face. But one of the conditions includes Babulal having to deal with one of his emotional demons from the plot, which becomes the main plot point of the second half of the film.
The second half of the movie is justifiable emotional, but the audience who is expecting comedy will be disappointed. Amitabh Bachchan delivers one of his best performances in this film and makes his character very believable. Not just in the funny scenes, but he excels in the emotional scenes as well and also manages to get the Gujarati accent perfectly. Rishi Kapoor also gets into his character very well and delivers a powerful performance, and the transformation of his character is applaud worthy. Jimit Trivedi, who was appreciated for his acting in Akshay Kumar’s Bhool Bhulaiya, gives out a memorable performance in this film too and often acts as the comic relief.
Umesh Shukla’s direction, though, is not at par with his previous films and he loses focus in certain scenes of the first half where the pacing doesn’t feel right. He manages to regain control in the second half. Saumya Joshi, who has also written and directed the original play that this film is based on, has written the dialogues and screenplay for this film. His dialogues connect with the audience very well and the screenplay does feel like a stage play at times, but the content is powerful enough for that to be ignored.
The songs in this film haven’t been given much importance and usually play in the background as the story moves forward. The film is just 102 minutes long, and the editing has been kept tight. The background music by George Joseph is perfect and goes along with the tone of the film beautifully. Laxman Utkar’s cinematography is okay but he manages to capture the locales of Mumbai perfectly.
Verdict: Overall, 102 Not Out is a family entertainer with a message, and can be watched once.

102 Not Out, the latest film by Umesh Shukla that brings together Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor after a long gap is a feel good movie. The direction could have been better and the story, which is based on a play of the same name, does not translate well on the movie screen. The dialogues are powerful but the songs are forgettable.
