Varun Dhawan, is an Indian actor who began his journey in the film industry as an assistant director to Karan Johar for ‘My Name is Khan’ (2010). A graduate of Nottingham Trent University, he made his acting debut with Johar’s 2012 romantic comedy ‘Student of the Year’. Movies like ‘Main Tera Hero’ and ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ made him popular due to his brilliant comic timing, while ‘Badlapur’ and ‘ABCD2’ showed the other side of his talent.

    Varun Dhawan is the son of the famous Bollywood director David Dhawan and Karuna Dhawan. His brother Rohit Dhawan is also a director and his uncle Anil Dhawan is a Bollywood actor.     After working as an assistant director in ‘My Name Is Khan’ under Karan Johar, he made his acting debut in the year 2012 with the Karan Johar directorial ‘Student Of The Year’ which also marked the debut of Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra. The film was a commercial success, getting 9 Award nominations and Varun’s performance stood out amongst critics.

    In 2014, he starred in the film ‘Main Tera Hero’ which was directed by his father David Dhawan and starred Ileana D’Cruz and Nargis Fakhri. This film was a remake of the Telugu film ‘Kandireega’ which featured Ram and Hansika Motwani in the lead roles. The film was a commercial success and Varun’s talent was compared to that of Govinda and Prabhudeva.

    He then went on to star in the Shashank Khaitan directorial ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ with Alia Bhatt and produced by Karan Johar who described this film as a tribute to ‘DIlwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge’. This film became one of the highest grossing films of Bollywood of that year and the critics praised the chemistry between Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt.

    After doing romantic comedies, Varun acted in the crime thriller directed by Sriram Raghavan titled ‘Badlapur’ which was apparently based on a true story, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The preparation for this film was a terrifying experience for Varun as he slipped into depression due to its dark tone. He was nominated for the Filmfare Award For Best Actor for his performance.

    Varun then appeared alongside Shraddha Kapoor in the blockbuster film ‘ABCD 2’ which was a sequel to ‘ABCD: Any Body Can Dance’, which had superhit chartbuster songs and commendable dance performances. The film was criticized but became a commercial success and established Varun as one of the best dancers in Bollywood. He then starred in Rohit Shetty’s ‘Dilwale’ as a part of an ensemble cast featuring Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Kriti Sanon. Despite negative reviews, the film went on to become one of the most commercially successful films in the history of Bollywood.

    He then appeared in ‘Dishoom’ directed by his brother Rohit Dhawan in the year 2016 alongside John Abraham which was a commercial success. This film also had a special appearance by Akshay Kumar, who had worked with Rohit and John in the film 'Desi Boyz'. Varun's first film of the year 2017 was ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ which was the second installment in the ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ franchise and his third film with Alia Bhatt. The movie became one of the biggest hits in his career and a hattrick hit with Alia Bhatt.

    In September of 2017, he starred in his father’s film for the second time with ‘Judwaa 2’ alongside Tapsee Pannu and Jacqueline Fernandez, which served as a sequel to the 1997 hit film ‘Judwaa’ starring Salman Khan.

    Varun will next be seen in Yash Raj Films’ ‘Sui Dhaga’ with Anushka Sharma and ‘October’ directed by Shoojit Sarcar which is scheduled to release in June of 2018.
