Tovino Thomas is a popular Malayalam actor who started off his career as a fashion model. Before he started his glorious stint with the silver screen, he has acted in a couple of Malayalam commercials. Tovino made is big screen debut in the 2012 Sajeevan Anthikkad movie Prabhuvinte Makkal which featured the actor in a small role. However, his second movie, Martin Prakkat's Dulquer Salmaan starrer ABCD, won him the attention of the audience as well as his next few projects. Following ABCD, Tovino was seen in a cameo appearance in August Club and was also seen in a notable role in Prithviraj's 7th day. Tovino Thomas was born in Thrissur district in Kerala on 21st January 1988 to Advocate Ellikkal Thomas and Sheela Thomas. He has two siblings – Tingston Thomas and Dhanya Thomas. Tovino attained his school education from Don Bosco High School, Irinjalakkuda. Later, he went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering from Tamil Nadu College of Engineering, Coimbatore and joined Cognizant Technology as an engineer before starting his career as an actor.

Tovino was smitten by the film bug from a very young age. He has revealed in interviews that though he was very passionate about films, he was scared to tell his parents about his film dreams. And so he studied engineering and got himself a job only to quit it and pursue his dreams, later. He gave himself a year’s time to try his luck in films. During his college days, he used to do modeling and act in short films. His first major stint as a model was for commercials like - Silvestorm Water Theme Park, Athirappally. He also featured in Indulekha Hair Oil commercials.
He made his debut in feature films with Sajeevan Anthikkad’s Prabhuvinte Makkal in 2012. Though the film didn’t turn out to be a hit, it landed the actor a role in Martin Prakkatt’s ABCD – American Born Confused Desi. The 2013 flick had Dulquer Salmaan playing the lead role and Tovino donning the hat of the villain. His portrayal of Akhilesh Varma, a corrupt politician bagged him more projects.
Tovino played Eby Ebineser in Syamdhar’s 7th Day in 2014. The film, starring Prithviraj was a sleeper hit and established Tovino as a promising actor. In the same year, he starred in Koothara, directed by Second Show fame Srinath Rajendran. The film performed average at the box-office.
In 2015, Tovino’s first release was Roopesh Peethambaran’s You Too Brutus, a comedy. He followed it up with the average grosser, Onnam Loka Mahayudham. On September 2015, Ennu Ninte Moideen, directed by RS Vimal released. The film had Tovino playing Perumparappil Appu, a key character with enough room for performance. The film was a blockbuster and propelled the actor into the major league. 2015 ended with Charlie, the Dulquer Salmaan flick in which Tovino played an extended cameo role.
He delivered power-packed performance as Edgar, the antagonist in Binu S’ Style (2016). He followed it up with Abi Varghese’s Monsoon Mangoes in which he was again seen in a cameo role. Guppy, although a box office flop, made Tovino a familiar face.
The success of Ennu Ninte Moideen and Charlie have established him as an upcoming star and has bagged him projects like Basil Joseph’s Godha, Prithviraj’s Ezra and Tom Emmatty’s Oru Mexican Aparatha all of which marked a turning point in actor's career.
The big success of Oru Mexican Aparatha and the critical appreciation his dual role fetched him triggered the paradigm shift in Tovino's initial career which was largely riddled with cameo roles and side roles in star-studded films. His next big release after OMA was Godha which was marked by actor's fine performance. Next came Tharangam, a black comedy produced by Kollywood star Dhanush. The movie wasn't exactly a success at the box office but Tovino's performance as a clumsy cop won singular praise from all four quarters. 2017, a remarkable year in the actor's career graph, ended on a high note for Tovino Thomas with Ashiq Abu directorial Mayaanadhi's critical and commercial success.
