  • Soubin Shahir Career

    Early Career

With the childhood experience of understanding how a film set works (which he learned while hanging out on various film sets with his father, a production controller), in 2003, Soubin entered the film world as an assistant director. Before this movie, Soubin had an uncredited role in Fazil directed Kaiyethum Doorathu (2002). He was the fourth assistant director to Siddique for the Mammootty starrer Chornic Bachelor. He worked as an assistant director for 14 years and during this time he assisted 8 directors, namely, Siddique, Fazil, Amal Neerad, Santosh Sivan, Rafi Mecartin, Rajeev Ravi, P. Sukumar and Amal Neerad. In 2013, after 10 years of being an assistant director, he came in front of the camera. His acting debut was in Rajeev Ravi’s Annayum Rasoolum, in which he played the role of Collin, a friend of Rasool played by Fahadh Faasil. He did small roles in 3 more movies (Kadal Kadannoru Mathukutty and 5 Sundarikal in 2013 and Masala Republic in 2014) before getting his first big break. He played the role of PT Master Shivan Sir in the 2015 blockbuster movie Premam. His witty dialogues, style of dialogue delivery and screen presence, all were highly appreciated by the audience and the critics and in no time Soubin Shahir became a household name for the movie-goers.

    Later Years

Post Premam, his career switched on into the top gear. He was seen along with Dileep in Chandrettan Evideya (2015), Mohanlal in Loham (2015) and Manju Warrier in Rani Padmini (2015). Then came Dulquer Salmaan starrer Charlie. Though his role, thief Sunikuttan, wasn’t there on the screen for a long time, it was enough to impress the audience. He again won a lot of approvals for his acting. But it is the 2016 blockbuster Maheshinte Prethikaaram, in which he played the role of Crispin, showed his full ability as an actor. Soubin as Crispin became a larger than life character, all thanks to the trolls and memes that were created using his dialogues. Just like in Premam, many of the witty dialogues were his own improvisation. All his mannerisms became really popular. He was branded as a name to watch out for, with this role. His next, Rajeev Ravi’s Kammatipaadam, proved his mettle as an actor. It was just a cameo but it stood out because the comedian Soubin wasn’t there on the screen. He came as a furious Karate master Biju and his acting in this role proved that it is not just comedy that he is good at. Another highlight of his career is the surprise hit Happy Wedding. The movie was carried throughout with the impeccable timing of Soubin and Sharafudheen. Similar was the case with the sleeper hit Anuraga Karikkin Vellam which featured him as mechanic Fakrudheen aka Fakru. Here again, the audience loved him and he was praised for his unique style of acting, mannerisms and above all dialogue delivery, which no one can replicate. The movies that followed such as CIA and Solo also fetched him the attention of the audience.
