Introduction

Shreya Ghoshal is a multilingual singer who started learning music at the age of four. However, she got her big break when she was spotted by Padma Shri awardee filmmaker, Sanjay Leela Bhansali at the TV musical reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. She sang five songs for the movie Devdas that gained her instant recognition. Shreya has sung beautiful songs such as Nagada Sang Dhol for Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Sun Raha Hai for Aashiqui 2, Teri Meri from Bodyguard, etc. which have become everyone’s favourite.

    Shreya Ghoshal was born in a Bengali Hindu family to Bishwajit Ghoshal, who is an electrical engineer at the Nuclear Power Corporation of India and Sarmistha Ghoshal, who is a literature post-graduate. Her birthplace is Bahrampur in West Bengal. She has a younger brother by the name Soumyadeep Ghoshal. Shreya's upbringing took place at Rawatbhata, which is a small town in Rajasthan. Shiladitya Mukhopadhyaya is Shreya Ghoshal's husband. They got married on 5th February 2015 after dating for nearly 10 years.

  • Shreya Ghoshal Career

    Shreya Ghoshal started learning music at the age of four. In 1995, she won All India Light Vocal Music Competition, at New Delhi which was held by Sangam Kala Group, in the category of Light Vocal group in sub-junior level. Shreya learned Tanpura along with her mother and started practicing Bengali songs. At six, Shreya received her formal training in classical music from late Kalyanji Bhai for one and a half years and continued it with late Mukta Bhide in Mumbai. The talented singer also started taking lessons in Hindustani classical music.

    Shreya gave her first stage performance at a club's annual function. She recorded her first song Ganraj Rangi Nachato, a cover version of Marathi song that was originally crooned by Lata Mangeshkar. She gave her voice to the studio album named Bendhechhi Beena comprising 14 tracks, which released on 1 January 1998. She also sang for albums such as O Tota Pakhi ReEkti Katha, and Mukhor Porag.

    Big Break with Bairi Piya Song

    At the age of 16, she participated and won Sa Re Ga Ma musical reality show. From here, there was no looking back for Shreya as she was spotted by National award-winning filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who gave her the much-needed break with Devdas movie. She got an opportunity to sing five songs namely Silsila Ye Chaahat KaBairi PiyaChalak ChalakMorey Piya, and Dola Re Dola for the movie. At the age of sixteen, Shreya recorded Bairi Piya which became an instant hit. Shreya won her first National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for this song. She also bagged her first Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer and Filmfare R. D. Burman Award for New Music Talent. Then the 34-year-old singer then sang three tracks for Milind Ukey's directorial venture Desh Devi.

    Shreya proved herself to be a versatile singer when she sang two seductive numbers namely Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai and Chalo Tumko Lekar Chale for the movie Jism, which won her Filmfare award Best Female Playback Singer. She made her first on-screen appearance for Saaya movie in 2003. Shreya got an opportunity to work with leading musicians in the Bollywood industry such as Anu Malik, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Rajesh Roshan, Shantanu Moitra, Vishal, Shekhar, Ravindra Jain and Daboo Malik.

    Second National Award 

    Shreya took away her second National award for singing Dheere Jalna for the movie Paheli in 2005. She sang Aashiq Banaya Aapne along with Himesh Reshammiya and Agar Tum Mil Jao for Zeher movie. In 2006, she performed her first duet with Sunidhi Chauhan in Imaan Ka Asar for Dor movie. In 2007, Shreya she sang her first Sanjay Leela Bhansali's composed track Thode Badmash for the movie Saawariya

    A. R. Rahman's composition Barso Re song from Guru movie won Shreya her third Filmfare award for Best Female Playback Singer. She sang Yeh Ishq Haaye song for the movie Jab We Met and bagged third National Film award. In the same year, Shreya worked with Ilaiyaraaja for Cheeni Kum songs.

    In 2008, Shreya sang the romantic song Teri Ore for the movie Singh Is Kinng, with which she took away her fourth Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Shreya won her fourth National award for crooning Pherari Mon for Bengali film Antaheen and Jeev Rangla for Marathi movie Jogwa.

    Multilingual Debut

    In the year 2002, Shreya marked her Tamil debut by singing Yen Chellam for the movie Album and found recognition after singing Munbe Vaa for the movie Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. With this stint, she won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award. Eventually, she sang Nuvvemmaya Chesavokaani and Atharintiki for the Telugu movie Okkadu. For the movie, Paris Pranaya Shreya debuted in Kannada by signing Krishna Nee Begane Baaro. Shreya marked her Malayalam debut by lending her voice to a studio album of composer Alphons Joseph. She stole many hearts with her song Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai from the movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. In 2010, she sang for independent English film When Harry Tries to Marry.

    In 2011, Shreya impressed one and all with her sweet voice in the song Saibo from the film Shor in the City. She also sang Teri Meri for Bodyguard movie and teamed with Bappi Lahiri to sing the sizzling song Ooh La La for Vidya Balan starrer The Dirty Picture.

    In 2012, Shreya gave her voice for Chikni Chameli for the movie Agneepath and admitted that she wasn't comfortable with the original Hindi lyrics. Shreya sang Piya O Re Piya song for Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya movie. She also sang Radha for the movie Student of the Year and Saans for Jab Tak Hai JaanSaans won Most Romantic Song of the year 2012 title.

    In 2013, the talented singer crooned the female version of Sunn Raha Hai for the movie Aashiqui 2. Shreya garnered positive reviews for singing Nagada Sang Dhol. She has been often compared to Lata Mangeshkar and many other music veterans. She also sang Jeene Laga Hoon for Ramaiya Vastavaiya movie. Shreya sang Manwa Laage for the movie Happy New Year, which surpassed 1 million views within an hour and 2 million views in 24 hours. Shreya sang Samjhawan for the movie Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.

    Four Kanadda songs sung by Shreya were included in The Times of India list of 10 Best Romantic Songs of 2017 and Blockbuster song from Telugu movie Sarrainodu was voted as 10 Best Party Songs of 2017 from the same news reporter. In 2017, Shreya became the first Indian singer to have her figurene in Madame Tussauds Museum.

    In 2018, Shreya sang Mandhaara for Bhaagamathie movie and lent her voice for the beautiful traditional track Ghoomar for the movie Padmaavat, the latter song garnered over 10 million views in a single day. She also sang Ek Do Teen recreated version for Baaghi 2 movie.
