Shraddha Kapoor, daughter of actor Shakti Kapoor is an Indian film actress who rose to fame with Mohit Suri’s ‘Aashiqui 2’, which emerged as a major box office success. One of the prominent faces in present Bollywood, she started her cinematic career with the 2010 fictional drama ‘Teen Patti’. A Boston University dropout, Shraddha has given blockbuster movies like ‘Ek Villain’ (2014), ‘Haider’ (2014), ‘ABCD 2’ (2015) and 'Baaghi' (2016).

    Shraddha Kapoor was born to a Punjabi father Shakti Kapoor and a Maharashtrian mother Shivangi Kolhapure on 3rd March 1987 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Being born and brought up in a filmy family and having actor parents, Shraddha Kapoor always wanted to become an actress, she would put on costumes, tell out dialogues and dance to Bollywood numbers. She would go along with her father to the shoots and would dance on Govinda’s film songs. She was trained in singing as her family consists of classical singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. She willingly used to fight with boys to mold herself into a tough character, she was a tomboy in her childhood.

    Shraddha Kapoor was born to film stars Shakti Kapoor, who was one of the most popular villains of his generation, and Shivangi Kolhapure. She was brought up in a mixed-ethnic family since her father is a Punjabi and her mother is a Maharashtrian. She has an elder brother Siddhanth Kapoor who is an actor and assistant director who played the role of a younger Salman Khan in the film 'Judwaa'. From her mother’s side, she has two aunts, actresses Padmini Kolhapure and Tejaswini Kolhapure, who along with Shraddha's mother are one of the famous Bollywood sister trios. She is related to the Mangeshkar-Burman family since Shivangi Kolhapure’s father, late Pandit Pandharinath is the cousin of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, and so they are grand-aunts to Shraddha Kapoor. She has singing in her genes and is also a lyricist.

    Early Years 

    Shraddha Kapoor started her Bollywood career in the year 2010 with the role of a college girl in the movie ‘Teen Patti’ which starred Amitabh Bachchan, R. Madhavan, and Ben Kingsley. Even though the movie didn’t fare well at the box office, her potential and alacrity were appreciated in the film. She also got nominated under the category of Best Female Debut at Filmfare Awards in the year 2011.

    Following this, she signed a three-film contract with Yash Raj Banner and acted in ‘Luv Ka The End’ opposite Taaha Shah. She played the role of a teenager, who takes revenge on her boyfriend, who cheats on her. Although this movie didn’t perform well at the box-office, Shraddha Kapoor was praised for her performance, she was presented with the Stardust Searchlight Award for Best Actress in the year 2012.

    Post this, she was offered a lead role in the movie ‘Aurangzeb’ as part of her Yash Raj contract, but she broke the contract and chose to act in Mohit Suri’s ‘Aashiqui 2’.

    Career Breakthrough

    The year 2013 gave Shraddha Kapoor her big break when her movie ‘Aashiqui 2’ starring Aditya Roy Kapoor became a mega blockbuster and earned more than 100 Crores at the box-office. She played the role of a small-town bar singer by name Aarohi Keshav Shirke, for which she was nominated for several awards under the Best Actress category.

    Later, she did a cameo in the movie ‘Gori Tere Pyar Mein’. In the year 2014, Shraddha teamed up with director Mohit Suri for the second time for the thriller ‘Ek Villian’ in which she sang a song named “Galliyan”. She plays the role of a terminally ill wife who is murdered by a serial killer. This film grossed ₹ 100 Crore and was a hit. Then, she was cast in Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Haider’ in which she played the role of a journalist, Arshia alongside Shahid Kapoor and Tabu. In the same year, Shraddha Kapoor shook her leg to an item song for the movie ‘Ungli’.

    In 2015, Shraddha was cast in the dance film ‘ABCD 2’, in which she played the role of a hip-hop dancer who participates in hip-hop competitions along with Suresh Mukund, played by Varun Dhawan. During the filming, she got to learn a variety of dance moves under the guidance of well-known choreographers Remo D’Souza and Prabhu Deva. This movie was her highest grossing release and her second 100 Crore Film.

    In the year 2016, she starred in the blockbuster movie ‘Baaghi’ opposite Tiger Shroff, which is a story about two rebellious lovers, for the film, she had practiced Kalaripayattu, a martial art from South India and along with co-star Tiger Shroff had performed all the stunts by herself without using ropes or harnesses. This film also made more than ₹100 Crore worldwide. She was seen in a cameo role in the film ‘A Flying Jatt’, which starred Tiger Shroff and Gaurav Pandey. As the year came to an end, Shraddha was seen in ‘Rock On 2’ alongside Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal and Prachi Desai. Her character was that of an introvert girl who has an estranged relationship with her father. She received vocal training by Samantha Edwards and portrayed a rock singer in the film.

    In the year 2017, Shraddha Kapoor was reunited with her ‘Aashiqui 2’ star Aditya Roy Kapoor for the movie ‘Ok Jaanu’, which is a remake of Tamil romantic drama directed by Mani Ratnam titled ‘O Kadhal Kanmani’. Then, she was seen opposite Arjun Kapoor in Chetan Bhagat’s romantic drama ‘Half Girlfriend’, which was produced by Mohit Suri and garnered ₹90 Crore worldwide.

    Shraddha Kapoor later acted in Apoorva Lakhia’s ‘Haseena Parkar’, in which she portrayed the role of Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parkar. Shraddha Kapoor's brother, Siddhanth Kapoor played the role of the underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim. After the release of the poster and trailer, ‘Haseena Parkar’ look caught the fancy of movie buffs. The movie didn't get a positive response from critics and audience and ended up as an average grosser.

    An upcoming movie of Shraddha Kapoor that all are eagerly waiting for is ‘Saaho’, an action-packed multilingual drama, in which she will be seen opposite the sensational ‘Baahubali’ star, Prabhas. She has also been signed up for Saina Nehwal’s biopic film ‘Saina’ directed by Amol Gupte. She will also be seen in ‘Dhadkan 2’ opposite Fawad Khan and Sooraj Pancholi.
