His father, Taj Mohammad was an Indian independence activist in Peshawar during India’s freedom struggle who later moved to Delhi post-independence in 1948 along with his family. Shah Rukh’s mother, Lateef Fatima was the daughter of a senior government engineer who married Taj Mohammad in 1959. Shah Rukh later had described his family saying that his mother was half Hyderabadi and his paternal grandmother belonged to Kashmir. But however, his paternal cousins in Peshawar claim that their family is that of Hindkowan origin who belonged to Kashmir and not Pashtun, and also claimed that SRK’s grandfather was not from Afghanistan.

    Shah Rukh meeting Gauri Khan

Shah Rukh met Gauri Chhiber at a common friend’s party when he used to stay in Delhi and was a TV actor. The couple courted for a few years while SRK was still acting in TV serials. In order to make a quick buck and marry Gauri, he thought of trying his luck in Bollywood by doing a few character roles and come back to Delhi to marry Gauri. In Mumbai, he met his ‘Circus’ TV serial director Aziz Mirza who signed him up as the lead for ‘Raju Bangaya Gentleman’ which took a while to take off. After receiving the signing amount for the film, SRK went back to Delhi to marry Gauri. After a few hiccups from Gauri’s family, the couple got married in a Punjabi Hindu traditional wedding ceremony on the 25th October 1991.

  • Shahrukh Khan Career

Shah Rukh Khan’s acting career has been a rollercoaster ride encompassed with sheer hard work, determination, and perseverance. Though he made his acting debut in Television, his journey to the big screen is not devoid of some excellent body of work which could make any of his fans proud. We take a look at his acting journey over the years below:

    1988-92

While studying his Mass Communications in Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi, he spent most of his time at Delhi’s Theatre Action Group (TAG) where he got the opportunity to study acting under the mentorship of theatre director Barry John. After a brief stint in Delhi’s National School of Drama he got a break in director Lekh Tandon’s Doordarshan TV serial ‘Dil Dariya’ which took some time to go on air during which he got selected to play the lead as an army man in Col. Kapoor’s TV serial ‘Fauji’ which became very popular in 1989. This was followed by TV serials like ‘Circus’, ‘Umeed’ and ‘Wagle Ki Duniya’.

After receiving recognition in TV serials, SRK thought of shifting to Bollywood to do a few character roles and come back to Delhi where he was planning to marry his longtime girlfriend, Gauri Chibber. In Mumbai, he met his ‘Circus’ TV serial director – Aziz Mirza who signed him up for the lead role in ‘Raju Bangaya Gentleman.’ As 'Raju Bangaya Gentleman' took a while to take off, SRK went back to Delhi to marry Gauri. In order to get a decent accommodation in Mumbai after marriage, he signed three more films namely, Raj Kanwar's 'Deewana,' Rajiv Mehra's 'Chamatkar,' and Hema Malini's directorial debut 'Dil Aashna Hai.' ‘Deewana’ which released ahead of ‘Raju Bangaya Gentleman’, became a hit giving him huge recognition. The success of the film in 1992 was followed by three films that year, ‘Chamatkar’, ‘Raju Bangaya Gentleman’ and ‘Dil Aashna Hai’. Actress turned director Hema Malini later claimed that it was she who had spotted Shah Rukh in a theater play and gave him a break in ‘Dil Aashna Hai.’

    1993-98

After making a smashing screen debut in 1992 and bagging the best debutant Filmfare award that year, SRK appeared in some forgettable films like Ketan Mehta's 'Maya Memsaab' and Rakesh Roshan’s ‘King Uncle’ in 1993. But later that year it was Abbas-Mustan’s ‘Baazigar’ which announced his arrival into the big league. ‘Baazigar’ saw him playing the anti-hero which co-starred Shilpa Shetty and Kajol as the lead actresses and helped him bag his first Filmfare trophy for Best Actor. The same year he followed up the success of ‘Baazigar’ with Yash Chopra’s ‘Darr’, which established him as a star.

The year 1994 saw films like ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’ and ‘Anjaam’ release but didn’t do much at the box-office. 1995 saw him having a mixed year which saw films like ‘Zamaana Deewana’, ‘Guddu’, ‘Trimurti’, and ‘Oh Darling! Yeh Hai India’ failing at the box-office but blockbusters like Rakesh Roshan’s ‘Karan Arjun’ and Aditya Chopra’s ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ hitting the bulls-eye and turning him into a superstar. Released on 20th October 1995, ‘DDLJ’s unprecedented run broke all then existing box-office records getting Indian cinema on the global map. The film continues to run uninterrupted to date (more than 1100 weeks) in Mumbai’s iconic Maratha Mandir cinema hall (in morning shows) making it the longest ever running Indian film in theaters breaking Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Sholay’s record of 5-year continuous run at Mumbai’s Minerva theatre.

After 1995 proving to be the turning point in his career, the following year 1996 saw him in four releases which included ‘English Babu Desi Mem’ where he played triple roles for the first time, ‘Chaahat’, ‘Army’ and ‘Dushman Duniya Ka’ all of which met with lukewarm success at the box-office. His association with Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions saw him signing some big films like ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ in 1997 and ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ in 1998 which were both box office hits. The success of both these films didn’t just put him on a new pedestal but helped him bag Filmfare’s Best Actor Award in 1997 and 1998, respectively.

    1999-2004

Post-1999, SRK was seen in films like ‘Baadshah’ and ‘Hey Ram’ whereas with ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’ he set his own production banner named - Dreamz Unlimited along with actress Juhi Chawla. With ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’ missing the mark, 2001 saw a string of disappointments from him like ‘One 2 Ka 4’ and ‘Asoka.’ The release of ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ in the same year was followed by big hits like ‘Devdas’, ‘Chalte Chalte’, ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, ‘Veer-Zaara’ and ‘Main Hoon Na’. He ended 2004 by giving his career-best performance in Ashutosh Gowariker’s ‘Swardes’ for which he bagged yet another Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

2003 was also the year where he restructured his production company and named it Red Chillies Entertainment.

    2005-2010

The period of 2005 to 2010 saw SRK grow as an actor where he started to do more mature roles with hard-hitting dialogues. The films which did good business during this period were Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Don- The Chase Begins Again,’ Shimit Amin’s ‘Chak De! India,’ Farah Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ (for which he worked on his bodybuilding a six-pack) and Karan Johar’s ‘My Name Is Khan’ where he yet again walked away with that years Filmfare Award for Best Actor. This phase also saw him venture into buying the IPL team - Kolkata Knight Riders.

In 2008, Shahrukh Khan went through depression and overcame it.

    2011-2017

Post-2011 saw SRK doing films in different genres with new-age directors. His sci-fi flick ‘Ra.One’ with Anubhav Sinha in 2011 and Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Don 2’ where he donned unique hairstyles, were experimental films which brought him back into contention. He also went into big-time production by producing blockbusters like ‘Chennai Express’ in 2013, ‘Happy New Year’ in 2014 and ‘Dilwale’ in 2015, etc. His ‘Raees’ finally got released in 2017 after being plagued by controversies for having Mahira Khan, a Pakistani actress in the film and for its central theme which was inspired by a real-time liquor smuggler and criminal Abdul Latif from Gujarat. The year later saw him appear in a cameo in Salman Khan’s ‘Tubelight’ and Imtiaz Ali’s rom-com ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ opposite Anushka Sharma. His ‘Fan’ in 2016 and ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ in 2017 make it to the list of SRK’s biggest disappointing films at the box-office.
