Samantha Ruth Prabhu, better known by her screen name Samantha is one of the leading heroines in Telugu and Tamil cinema. Though it was ‘Moscowin Kavery’ was the first film she signed, Gautam Menon’s 2010 Telugu film ‘Ye Maya Chesave’ marked her her debut as it was first to hit theatres. Since then, the actress appeared in several Tamil and Telugu movies along with earning some of the prestigious awards for her performances.

Born on April 28, 1987, in Chennai to Prabhu and Ninette Prabhu, Samantha was the last of three siblings. Before entering films, she was modelling for a wardrobe retailer called Naidu Hall, when filmmaker Ravi Varman’s gaze fell upon her. He has roped in her to play the leading lady in the film ‘Moscowin Kavery’ opposite Rahul Ravindran. Although ‘Moscow Kavery’ was completed much earlier, it didn’t see the light for a while for only to make her first Telugu film ‘Ye Maya Chesave’ as the debut film of her career.

Samantha was born in a middle-class Christian family to Telugu father and Malayali mother. She has two elder brothers David and Jonathan. As mentioned earlier, though her father is a Telugu and her mother is a Malayali, Samantha identifies herself as a Tamilian as she was raised in Chennai and fluent in Tamil.
The actress fell in love with her debut film ‘Ye Maya Chesave’ co-actor Naga Chaitanya, who happens to have come from the two towering families of Telugu cinema namely - Akkineni and Daggubati. He is born to popular actor Akkineni Nagarjuna and his first wife Laxmi Daggubati, daughter of D. Ramanayudu, the renowned Telugu film producer. Samantha and Naga Chaitanya were in love for several years before taking it to the next level by joining in marriage on October 6, 2017, in Goa.

With her very debut film ‘Ye Maya Chesave’, Samantha breezed into the hearts of the Telugu youth through her portrayal of ‘Jessie’, winning multiple awards for her performance. Her role as a strong yet indecissive young girl turned out to be one of the be most relatable characters ever written. She was praised high for her subtle performance in the film and the actress has especially received great compliments from legendary ANR garu. Subsequently, she made her Tamil debut with the film ‘Baana Kaathadi’.
In Telugu, her juggernaut kept rolling with blockbusters like ‘Brindavanam’ starring Jr NTR and Mahesh Babu’s ‘Dookudu’. With these two big films hitting the bull's eye, Samantha became the star heroine of Tollywood cementing her place firmly in the industry. Around this time, she appeared in a cameo in the Hindi remake of ‘Ye Maya Chesave’, 'Ek Deewana Tha'. In 2012, she starred in SS Rajamouli’s ‘Eega’, winning accolades and recognition for her performance. Before long, Samantha was considered as ‘Golden Girl’ in the Telugu Film Industry.
In the same year, Samantha starred in yet another Gautam Menon film ‘Yeto Vellipoindi Manasu’ in which she acted opposite Natural Star Nani. She has once again impressed the Telugu audience overwhelmingly with the way she changed her looks and body language in each stage of growth from a school-days girl to a 24-years-old woman. The year 2013 gave some of the blockbuster hits of her career including, ‘Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu’ and ‘Attarintiki Daredi’ in which she acted opposite Mahesh Babu and Pawan Kalyan respectively. But the year ended with ‘Ramayya Vasthavayya’, a major flop in her career at the box office.
Just like how the previous year treated her, 2014 too turned out to be a very good time for the actress. It began with ‘Manam’, which had three generations of the Akkineni clan – Akkineni Nageshwar Rao, Nagarjuna, Naga Chaitanya and Akhil. Samantha perfectly was a perfect in the two roles she played and nailed them with utmost precision. In two different characters - Krishna Veni and Priya, the actress stealed the show along with Nagarjuna.
She then moved on to Deva Katta’s long-delayed project ‘Autonagar Surya’ where she has once again acted as Naga Chaitanya’s love-interest after ‘Ye Maya Chesave’ and ‘Manam’. Post ‘Manam’, the actress appeared in ‘Alludu Seenu’ ‘Anjaan’ and ‘Rabhasa’ which couldn’t do well at the box-office. Cheering up her from the disappointment over consecutive average flicks, Samantha got an opportunity to act opposite one of the huge stars of Tamil cinema Ilayathalapathy Vijay. She played Ankitha in Vijay starrer ‘Kaththi’ under A.R Murugadoss direction. ‘Kaththi’ became a sensational hit in Kollywood and welcomed Samantha with several offers.
In 2015, only three films of hers released which include ‘S/O Sathyamurthi’, ’10 Endruthukulla’ and ‘Thanga Magan’. But in 2016, she acted in total six films including a cameo in ‘Bangalore Naatkal’. In this year, she played leading lady opposite Vijay, Surya, Mahesh Babu and Jr NTR in movies such as ‘Theri’, ‘24’, ‘Brahmothsavam’ and ‘Janatha Garage’ respectively. 2016 has also given her a blockbuster movie like ‘A Aa’ which is based on Yaddanapudi Sulochanarani's novel, 'Meena'. Her remarkable performance in this simple and effective tale ‘A Aa’ earned her Filmfare and IIFA awards that year. Samantha has appeared as Anasuya, a 23-year-old vulnerable girl who was chained by an overprotective mother. She pulled the role off very well with varied expressions at an every encounter.
For the first time ever in her career, 2017 stood as the year where no films of Samantha hit the screens in the first nine months. Finally, on October 18, her first film of 2017, ‘Mersal’ released with a bang.
In 2018, she then went on to act as the female lead in the Ram Charan-Sukumar movie ‘Rangasthalam 1985’, both of these movies entered the 200 Crore club. Samantha then went on to star in the Savitri biopic titled Mahanati where she essayed the role of a journalist along with Vijay Devarakonda. In the same year, she signed the Tamil films Irumbu Thirai, Seema Raja, Super Deluxe and a Tamil-Telugu bilingual remake of the Kannada film U-Turn.

Samantha runs a company named SVSPartners LLP along with her partners Vamshi, Shriram and Meghna Vinod.

NGO - Pratyusha
Overwhelmed by the unprecedented fame and continuous love from the people, Samantha wanted to contribute something to the society in return. In 2014, she conceptualized and established an NGO named ‘Pratyusha (which means new dawn)’ in Hyderabad that serves the underprivileged by providing medication for women and children who suffer from life-threatening diseases. The organization conducts medical camps across Bangalore, Chennai, AP, Telangana in association with established hospitals like Rainbow, Continental, Livlife and Ankura. Samantha runs this NGO with the unwavering support of its co-founder Padma Shri Dr Manjula Anagni, a leading laparoscopic surgeon and gynaecologist.

Promoting Handlooms in Telangana
Samantha played one of the prominent roles in reviving the handloom industry in Telangana. She was appointed as the Telangana Handloom Ambassador in February 2017 and since then, the actress has been trying her best to bring back the glory of the declining industry. Her active participation in campaigns like ‘Revive and Reweave’ and ‘Woven 2017’ has given handlooms much needed attention. We can say that Samantha has made handlooms fashionable by bridging the gap between old designs and modernity by collaborating with new designers.

Her tweet on Mahesh Babu’s film ‘Nenokkadine’ saying one of its posters is ‘regressive’ has created a stir. After 2 years of the 'Nenokkadine' poster controversy, in 2015, the actress was once again made it to headlines. Reportedly, the actress' house had been raided by the officers for tax evasion. However, the actress and her parents denied the allegations.
