Ram Charan Career
Early Success and Stardom
Ram Charan made his acting debut in the year 2007 through the film Chirutha directed by star director Puri Jagannadh. Released amidst high expectations on 28 September 2007, the film showcased Ram Charan as an all-rounder of an actor. Despite comments that it's a routine story, the film was generally well received. Ram Charan's bass tone, rough looks, and ease in dance sequences are positively commented upon. Neha Sharma was the lead lady in that film.
But it is the next film that truly established Ram Charan as the true Scion of the Mega family. The Rajamouli directorial Magadheera was the precursor to many of the bigger events to come to fruition. The romantic action entertainer blended the Chandamama style of a tale with a modern day love story, the bridge between them is a reincarnation of the major characters. Ram Charan excelled in both roles, that of a warrior of the Udaygadh Kingdom named Kala Bhairava and a modern day youth who likes to take challenges named Harsha.
Ram Charan learned horse riding and took his dancing skills to the next level, not to talk about his screen presence in the episodes in the flashback scenes. Magadheera went on to become the highest grossing film of all time in Telugu by a huge margin and still remains one after all these years. Kajal Aggarwal was the heroine of the film.
Then he experimented with his third film. He played the role of an uber-cool youngster named Ram in the avant-garde romantic love story, Orange in 2010. Genelia D'Souza was the heroine of the film while Shazahn Padamsee was seen playing a pivotal role. The film which talks about what true love is and is the story of a guy who doesn’t believe in the permanency of love no matter how others proclaim it to be. It was directed by Bhaskar of Bommarillu fame.
Orange was amidst high expectations what with Magadheera becoming the biggest industry hit and Bhaskar’s previous track record. Unfortunately, the film failed to set the box office on fire. But gained a sort of cult following over the years and was commented upon by some critics as ahead of its time.
Ram Charan as a Commercial Hero
For his next film, Ram Charan played it safe. The Sampath Nandi directorial Racha, released in 2012, was backed by industry veterans Paruchuri Brothers in the script department and went on to score a commercial success. Ram Charan’s mass avatar as Betting Raju drew comparisons with Chiranjeevi in his heydays. The film was commented upon as a tribute to the early 1990s Chiranjeevi films and mass films of that time in general. Tamannaah Bhatia is the heroine of the film. The movie paved way for him to come up with similar mass masala entertainers with loads of action.
2013 saw Ram Charan act in two films including his Bollywood debut with Zanjeer. The first film to release that year was Naayak directed by V. V. Vinayak. A typical Vinayak action entertainer, Naayak went on to become a commercial success with moderately positive reviews. Kajal Aggarwal and Amala Paul joined him as the female leads. This is Kajal’s second combination with Ram Charan after the hugely successful Magadheera. Naayak saw him in a proper dual role for the first time.
Ram Charan’s Bollywood tryst
Zanjeer hit the screens under huge expectations as it saw him playing the main solo lead in a Bollywood film. The Telugu version Thoofan was simultaneously made with a slightly different cast. Priyanka Chopra played the female lead and till date, this film remains her only Telugu film. Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, Zanjeer was panned by the critics nationwide when it was released.
Ram Charan reprised the iconic role of Vijay Khanna played by Amitabh Bachchan in the original 1973 film. Sanjay Dutt reprised the role of Shere Khan immortalized by Pran and Srihari played the same role in Telugu version. Interestingly, Ram Charan and Srihari played early-rivals turned friends in Magadheera too, one of Srihari’s roles in Magadheera is Shere Khan.
Ram Charan Career from 2014 - 2016
Ram Charan is back to his elements in 2014 with the commercially successful Yevadu which saw him share the screen space with another Mega Hero Stylish Star Allu Arjun. The Vamshi Paidipally directorial saw him play a youngster whose face was changed after a surgery. The two-shade character was nailed with his typical exuberance by Ram Charan which firmly established him in the realm of commercial cinema.
His second release of the year was Govindudu Andarivadele where he teamed up with Krishna Vamsi for the first time. The romantic family drama saw him in a different role of sorts for him after a series of commercial roles. The film received mixed reactions from the critics and the audience but performed below average at the box office. The film saw him pair up with Kajal Aggarwal for the third time. Though she played a cameo in Yevadu, she played the role in combination with Allu Arjun.
Ram Charan’s sole release in 2015 was Bruce Lee - The Fighter directed by Srinu Vaitla. The film has the distinction of Mega Star Chiranjeevi making a return to the big screen after a long gap of six years through it. Despite this, the film failed both critically and commercially.
Ram Charan’s Makeover and Rangasthalam
Ram Charan went through a complete makeover for his next film, Dhruva where he played the role of Dhruva IPS. The film received high critical acclaim with Ram Charan’s performance as ACP Dhruva scored the brownie points with the critics. The official Telugu remake of the widely successful Tamil thriller Thani Oruvan. Rakul Preet Singh paired up with him for the second time after Bruce Lee. The Surender Reddy directorial was declared an above average venture at the box office.
Then came the biggest hit of his career, Rangasthalam. Rangasthalam was a historical success in many ways that it received unanimous critical acclaim for its period setting, story, direction, music, and the performances of all the lead cast, and more importantly, Ram Charan’s act as Chitti Babu was well received by one and all. The film was an all-round success. Rangasthalam grossed more than Rs. 200 crores (only third Telugu film to do so) and it was declared an industry hit.
Ram Charan’s performance as Chelluboina Chitti Babu, a rugged village youth with a hearing defect was hailed as one of the best performances of all time by a Telugu actor. Samantha played the female lead opposite him for the first time. This is the first combination of Sukumar with Ram Charan. Currently, Rangasthalam stands as the third highest grossing Telugu film of all time, standing just behind Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and Baahubali: The Beginning.
Ram Charan’s next movie is in the direction of Boyapati Srinu. Pooja Hegde plays the female in the film produced by D. V. V. Danayya. The movie Vinaya Vidheya Rama hits the screens during 2019 Sankranthi season. His next project is the highly anticipated multi-starrer co-starring Young Tiger N. T. R. in the direction of S. S.
