Pawan Kalyan Career
Pawan Kalyan made his acting debut in the year 1996 with ‘Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbai’ along with Supriya, niece of Akkineni Nagarjuna and the movie was directed by EVV Satyanarayana for which Pawan Kalyan received a positive response. In 1997, he came out with the movie, ‘Gokulamlo Seetha’ where Raasi starred opposite to him and was a remake of Tamil super hit ‘Gokulathil Seethai.’ In 1998, his first release was ‘Suswagatham’ which was a remake of Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s ‘Love Today’ where Devayani starred opposite him. The movie was a decent hit giving Pawan Kalyan the much needed push in his career.
Pawan Kalyan got his career breakthrough with the second release in 1998, a romantic comedy, ‘Tholiprema’ opposite Keerthi Reddy, which was also director A Karunakaran’s debut. The movie turned out to be an industry hit and it generated a new found craze for Pawan Kalyan among the youth. Karunakaran saw Pawan Kalyan’s photo on a film magazine in Chennai when he decided that he would be his protagonist for his film. ‘Tholiprema’ received National Award for the Best Feature Film in Telugu and also a Nandi Award for Best Film. One of the many interesting facts about ‘Tholiprema' is that it won close to 6 Nandi Awards.
The following year 1999 saw Pawan Kalyan as ‘Thammudu’ which was inspired by the Hindi super hit ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander’ and was directed by PA Arun Prasad. The movie starred Preethi Jhingania as the female lead and was a blockbuster with Ramana Gogula’s fantastic music album bringing Pawan Kalyan closer to the youth. For the first time in Telugu cinema, Pawan Kalyan choreographed and performed his own stunts. This was followed by ‘Badri’ in 2000 and was the debut movie for the dynamic director, Puri Jagannadh. ‘Badri’ too was a runaway hit with Pawan Kalyan acing it with his unique body language and a new of a kind of action sequences. Apparently, Pawan and Amisha Patel came together for a movie titled 'Cheppalani Vundi' that was being produced by AM Rathnam, but it is said that another Telugu movie with the similar theme was already completed. So, this made the makers switch their plans to remake a Tamil film, 'Kushi.'
In 2001 summer, Pawan Kalyan came out with the rom-com ‘Kushi’ opposite Bhoomika Chawla and for the super successful movie it turned out to be, Pawan Kalyan cemented himself as the next generation’s biggest star for Telugu Film Industry. Though the movie was a remake of the same director, SJ Surya’s Tamil hit with the same title, the uniqueness Pawan Kalyan brought into this movie with his body language apart from choreographing his own stunts made the movie an industry hit. It also generated a never seen before craze among the youth and thus leading to a huge fan base across the Telugu states (then United) for the star.
After a gap of nearly two years, Pawan Kalyan made his directorial debut with ‘Johnny’ in which he starred along with his then-girlfriend, Renu Desai. The movie was produced by Geetha Arts and it carried great hype to become the first Telugu movie to be released with over 250 prints worldwide across 325 theatres. Though in earlier movies, Pawan had sung a few bit songs, one of the things that were noticed in this movie were the folk bit songs sung by Pawan Kalyan. The movie turned up to be a disappointed one at the BO.
Again after close to a year, in 2004 Pawan Kalyan turned up with an action comedy, ‘Gudumba Shankar’ where Meera Jasmine starred opposite to him and was directed by Veera Shankar. Nagendra Babu produced the movie under their home banner, Anjana Productions while Pawan Kalyan worked on the screenplay and additional story for this movie. Though the movie carried great expectations and had a decent dose of comedy, the movie turned out to be an average affair at the BO. Pawan Kalyan always had his way to set a new trend and with this movie, the fashion of wearing two pants at a time was something Pawan tried which was one of the crazes that caught the youth's attention in that time. In the same year, Pawan Kalyan also made a cameo appearance in the movie ‘Shankardada MBBS’ in the song ‘Na pere kanchana maala..’
In 2005, Pawan Kalyan collaborated with director Karunakaran for the second time to come up with ‘Balu ABCDEFG’ that was produced by C Ashwini Dutt under his banner Vyjayanthi Movies. It starred Shriya Saran and Neha Oberoi as the female leads while the movie ended up as an average one. A pant that Pawan wore in this movie was worth Rs. 50 lakhs and it became quite a big sensation back then. Pawan Kalyan and AM Ratham again announced a movie 'Satyagrahi' that was to be directed by Pawan Kalyan himself, but due to unknown reasons, the movie got shelved.
The year 2006 saw Pawan Kalyan in two movies, the first one being 'Bangaram' directed by Tamil director Dharani where he didn't have any leading lady opposite to him except when Trisha made a special appearance towards the end. The movie starred Meera Chopra and Raja in other crucial roles. The second movie was ‘Annavaram’ that was a remake of Vijay’s ‘Thirupaachi’ and starred Asin opposite him. Both the movies were average affairs.
In 2007, Pawan Kalyan made only a cameo appearance in ‘Shankardada Zindabad’ which was directed by Prabhu Deva. In 2008, Trivikram collaborated with Pawan Kalyan for the first time for ‘Jalsa’ and it starred Ileana, Kamilini Mukherjee and Parvati Melton as the female leads while the movie ended up to be an average flick. Again after a gap of one year, Pawan Kalyan teamed up with his ‘Kushi’ director SJ Surya for ‘Puli’ which was initially named ‘Komaram Puli’ and had its music by AR Rahman. Nikeesha Patel played the female lead opposite to Pawan in this film.
The first release for Pawan Kalyan in the year 2011 was ‘Teenmaar’ that starred Trisha and Kriti Kharbanda as the female leads opposite him and was directed by Jayanth C Paranjee. It was produced by his ardent fan and follower, Bandla Ganesh under his banner Parameswara Art Creations and was the remake of Bollywood’s super hit ‘Love Aaj Kal.’ The second movie in the same year was ‘Panjaa’ that was directed by the stylish director Vishnuvardhan and starred Sarah Jane Dias and Anjali Lavania as the female leads. Both the movies turned out to be as average grossers.
In 2012, Pawan Kalyan donned a new avatar as ‘Gabbar Singh’ that was a remake of Salman Khan’s ‘Dabaang’ and starred Shruti Haasan as his lady love. Directed by Harish Shankar and produced by Bandla Ganesh, the movie turned out to be the biggest hit in Pawan Kalyan’s career which he tasted after nearly 10 years. Pawan Kalyan punch dialogues became a rage with his fans and the movie lead to a sequel later. The movie re-wrote all the records for the best opening day collections, best opening weekend collections and also lifetime collections at that time. It fetched Pawan a CineMAA, a Filmfare and a SIIMA Award in the Best Actor category.
In the same year, Puri Jagannadh teamed up with Pawan Kalyan for the second time to make the political action drama, ‘Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu’ which saw Tamannaah pairing for the first time with Pawan. The movie did a fair job at the BO as it did not come out with much hype.
The year 2013 saw Pawan Kalyan and Trivikram coming together for the second time in ‘Atharintiki Daredi’ where Samantha and Pranitha Subash played the leading ladies. The movie worked wonders not just for the combination but for its content as well making it the all-new highest grossing movie surpassing SS Rajamouli’s ‘Magadheera’ and collecting a share over Rs. 78 Crores. Prior to the release, the movie got leaked online and it turned out to be huge controversy though it could not disturb any of the movie’s business in any way. Pawan Kalyan and Trivikram let go off a part of their remuneration in order to compensate for their producer, BVSN Prasad. He also reprised an old folk song, 'Katamarayuda kadiri narasimhuda..' in this movie singing it himself which drew a good attention. Later, he even came up with a movie titled on this same song, 'Katamarayudu.'
It took another year for Pawan Kalyan to appear in his next movie, ‘Gopala Gopala’ in 2015. It was a multi-starrer where ‘Victory’ Venkatesh starred alongside him which was a remake of Bollywood’s super hit, ‘OMG – Oh My God!’ that was directed by Kishore Kumar Pardasani. Pawan Kalyan reprised Akshay Kumar’s role as Lord Krishna and it was an instant hit with the audience.
This was followed by the sequel to ‘Gabbar Singh’, ‘Sardar Gabbar Singh’ and was directed by K S Ravindra. Pawan Kalyan and Sharath Marar jointly produced this movie under their banners Pawan Kalyan Creative Works and North Star Entertainments in association with Eros International. The movie was simultaneously released in Hindi with the same title. Though the movie received record-breaking openings, it could not perform well at the BO.
In 2017, Pawan Kalyan appeared as ‘Katamarayudu’ which was a remake of Ajith Kumar’s ‘Veeram’ under the direction of Kishore Kumar Pardasani and it starred Shruti Haasan as his love interest for the second time. This film also received record-breaking opening but couldn’t sustain big at the BO.
Pawan Kalyan collaborated with Trivikram Srinivas for the third time which will be the 25th movie in his career under Haarika Hassini Creations banner. The movie is planned for a Sankranthi 2018 release and will see Keerthy Suresh and Anu Emmanuel as the leading ladies. Successful music director from Tamil, Anirudh Ravichandran is making his Telugu debut by scoring music for this one.
Pawan Kalyan movies are also dubbed into Hindi and they have a decent following across North India.
