Paoli Dam is a Bengali film actress began her career with Bengali television serial "Jibon Niye Khela". She went on to appear in several Bengali soap opera and telefilms before she made it to the big screen. The first film she was a part of was Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha's Teen Yaari Kotha which didn't release till 2012. Her first film to release was Agnipariksha. She shot to spotlight with Gautam Ghose's Kalbela, the film adaptation of Samaresh Majumdar's best seller novel by the same name where she played Madhabilata, the female lead opposite Parambrata Chatterjee. In 2011, she received international recognition for her role in the Bengali film, Chatrak.

Early Life

Paoli was born in Kolkata, West Bengal. Her father and mother are Amol and Papiya Dam. Paoli’s family is originally from Faridpur District, Bangladesh. She also has a brother, Mainak. Dam spent her childhood in Kolkata. She attended Loreto School in Bowbazar from where she passed her Higher Secondary Examination. She was a good student. She earned a scholarship and get admission in Vidyasagar College. She earned a postgraduate degree in chemistry from Rajabazar Science College. Initially she wanted to be a chemical research scholar before she joined the film industry. She learnt classical dance in her childhood. She was also interested in theater. However, she never aspired to become an actor.


TV Career

Paoli started her career on the small screen. She appeared in Jibon Niye Khela, on Zee Bangla. Later she played key roles in Tithir Otithi, Tarpor Chand Uthlo, Sonar Harin and Jaya. Later Paoli told she learnt a lot from working on television.


Her debut Bengali film was Teen Yaari Katha, directed by Sudeshna Roy which released much later in 2012. Her first release was Agnipariksha, directed by Rabi Kinagi where Paoli plays a supporting role. She plays supporting actress in Mithun Chakraborty starrer Tulkalam and Dev and Payel starrer I Love You. She also played a key role in a comedy Hoccheta Ki.  

In 2009 she appeared in Gautam Ghose’s film adaptation of Kaalbela where she played the leading lady opposite Parambrata Chatterjee. Based on a Bengali novel by Samaresh Majumdar, the film has the Naxalite movement of the 1980s Bengal at its backdrop. Dam played Madhabilata, the wife of a young Naxalite leader. Her performance was appreciated by the critics and common moviegoers in the film and Paoli became one of the most familiar faces of Bengali cinema. Paoli later addressed Kaalbela as the “Turning Point” of her career. She had six releases that year. Among them,  Rituporno Ghosh’s Shob Choritro Kalponik starring Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, and Bipasha Basu demands a special mention. Other films were were Hochchheta ki, directed by Basu Chatterjee, Jamai Raja, directed by Swapan Saha, Box No. 1313; Mallick Bari, and Tinmurti.

In 2011, she received international recognition for her role in the Bengali film, Chatrak. In 2012, she made her Bollywood debut in Hate Story and also appeared in Vikram Bhatt's Ankur Arora Murder Case.
