Jr NTR Career
NTR Jr. made his first onscreen appearance in ‘Brahmarshi Vishwamitra’ (1991) in a cameo role. The movie starred his grandfather and actor N T Rama Rao who also produced and directed it. At the age of 13, he featured in Gunasekhar’s ‘Ramayanam' (1996) in which he played the role of Lord Rama. The interesting fact about this movie was that the entire cast of the film were child artists and hence it was marketed as 'Bala Ramayanam.' Many claimed that he resembled his grandfather in looks and with his performance he won everyone's heart apart from a couple of awards. Produced by Mallemala Sundara Rami Reddy, the movie turned out to be a successful one and it won many awards including the National Award for ‘Best Children’s Film.'
In 1997, he acted in a TV series, ‘Bhaktha Markandeya’ which was directed by P.N. Ramachandra Rao. It was written by Vakkantham Suryanarayana, father of Tollywood writer and director Vakkantham Vamsi, a good friend of Tarak and the one who also gave stories for Tarak's films ‘Ashok’, ‘Oosaravelli’ and ‘Temper.’ After a small gap, it was Gunasekhar who recommended Tarak to Rajamouli for the latter's debut film 'Student No.1'. However, the movie went into production for long and in the mean time, ace producer, Ramoji Rao signed Tarak for a romantic drama, 'Ninnu Chudalani' under the direction of VR Prathap which turned out to be NTR Jr's first movie as a lead actor.
Apparently, K Raghavendra Rao promised Senior NTR that he would launch Tarak with his movie and he kept his promise by co-producing ‘Student No.1’ along with C Ashwini Dutt. Tarak struck hard this time with 'Student No.1' that also happened to be the debut film of SS Rajamouli. The movie went on to become a super hit and NTR Jr. made a mark in the industry. This was followed by ‘Subbu' which turned out to be an average grosser.
The year 2002 saw NTR Jr. as 'Aadi', a high energy action drama and was the debut film of director VV Vinayak. With ‘Aadi’, Tarak made his position even stronger sending strong waves about the rising of a new super star. The movie got a superb response from the audience and went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters of Tollywood apart from fetching Tarak a 'Nandi' and 'CineMAA' awards for the Best Actor that year.
His next two films 'Allari Ramudu', directed by B Gopal and 'Naaga', directed by DK Suresh turned out to be average affairs and soon he teamed up with Rajamouli for 'Simhadri' in 2003. This was their second movie together and it opened to super positive reports. It went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters in Telugu cinema. The success of this film also increased NTR Jr.'s fan base apart from earning him uncomparable stardom placing him in the top league star heroes. This movie also won him his second CineMAA Award for Best Actor.
In the following year 2004, NTR Jr. teamed up with Puri Jagannadh for ‘Andhrawala’ in which he played a dual role for the first time in his career. The audio launch of this film still stands as the biggest audio launch event in India for which lakhs of fans attended from all across the Telugu states. The audio event took place at Nimmakuru, Krishna district, which is the native of late N T Rama Rao. Special trains were arranged from various cities to Nimmakuru and the event was organized by NTR Jr.'s friend and politician, Kodali Nani. The movie released for 2004 Sankranthi amidst huge expectations but failed to impress the audience.
After ‘Andhrawala’ Tarak tried exploring different subjects, but his next four films, 'Naa Alludu' directed by Mullapudi Vara, VV Vinayak's 'Samba', B Gopal's 'Narasimhudu' and Surender Reddy's 'Ashok' where he starred opposite to Sameera Reddy, could not impress the audience much.
In 2006, he teamed up with Krishna Vamsi for a family drama 'Rakhee' which received rave reviews from the critics. NTR Jr.'s performance was appreciated by the critics and as well as the audience. Especially his performance in the court scene in the climax stands as one of the evergreen scenes in his career.
For the third time in his career, in 2007 NTR Jr. teamed up with Rajamouli for ‘Yamadonga.’ He went under drastic physical transformation for the film recreating himself and won everyone's heart with his commitment to acting. The additional scoop in this film apart from making his singing debut (for the song O Lammi Thikkaregindha, a remix of his grandfather's song) was his stupendous performance as Lord Yama giving a tough competition to senior actor Mohan Babu. NTR Jr.'s dialogue delivery in this film was impeccable, especially the monologue he delivers during the interval block became an instant hit and stands as an evergreen one. The movie was received well and Tarak won his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor. In 2008, his only film was 'Kantri' which marked the Telugu debut of director Meher Ramesh and was produced by senior producer C Aswini Dutt. He also made a brief cameo in Venkatesh's 'Chintakayala Ravi.'
In 2010, Tarak teamed up with V V Vinayak for the third time for 'Adhurs' where he was seen in a dual role alongside Nayanatara and Sheela which was presented by his 'Samba' producer Kodali Nani and produced by Vallabaneni Vamshi Mohan. He even sang a song in this movie that was composed by Devi Sri Prasad. This movie proved that NTR Jr. is not just good with emotional performances but can tickle your ribs without any effort. His performance as Chari, a Brahmin Pandit beside the legendary comedian Brahmanandam stands as bench mark comic performance in Telugu cinema. This was followed by a family entertainer, 'Brindavanam' where Tarak was seen in a classy look opposite Samantha and Kajal Aggarwal. This was the first time Dil Raju and NTR Jr. teamed up and it was directed by Vamsy Paidipalli. The movie turned out to be a huge success.
Tarak had two releases in the year 2011. While the first one 'Shakti' directed by Meher Ramesh, turned out to be a dud, the second one was Surender Reddy's 'Oosaravelli' alongside Tamannaah, turned out to be an average affair. In 2012, Tarak teamed up with Boyapati Srinu for 'Dammu' alongside Trisha and Karthika and it was an average grosser. He started the year 2013 with 'Baadshah' under the direction of Srinu Vaitla which was produced by actor turned producer Bandla Ganesh. Though the movie received a mixed response from the critics, NTR Jr. was appreciated for his performance. Tarak's next two films, 'Ramayya Vastavayya' directed by Harish Shankar turned out to be an average affair and 'Rabhasa' with Santosh Srinivas is considered as one of NTR Jr.'s biggest flops.
He made a strong come back in the year 2015 with 'Temper' playing the corrupted cop, Daya. This movie marked his second movie with Bandla Ganesh as well as Puri Jagannadh. NTR Jr.'s punch dialogues all through the movie got immense appreciation and he finally scored a super hit with the dynamic director Puri Jagannadh for which the story was provided by Vakkantham Vamsi. The movie resulted in being one of the biggest hits in Tarak's career winning him the CineMAA Award for Best Actor.
In 2016, his first release was 'Nannaku Prematho' which was directed by Sukumar. Apart from singing a song in this movie, he surprised everyone with a never seen before look in the film which received a super response. The teaser of the film also received a tremendous response and NTR Jr.'s classy act with subtle emotional performance in the film won him his second Filmfare Award for Best Actor. It records as the first movie of NTR Jr. to collect a share of Rs. 50 Crores. He also happened to make his debut into Kannada industry by singing a song, 'Geleya Geleya' for his Kannada actor-friend, Puneeth Raj Kumar's 'Chakravyuha' for which the music was scored by SS Thaman. He even won the Mirchi Singing Sensation Award for this song.
His second release in the year was 'Janatha Garage' where he co-starred with Malayalam superstar Mohanlal under the direction of Koratala Siva. The movie received a double thumbs up from the audience and went on to become the first movie in NTR Jr.'s career to gross over Rs. 100 Crores. It also stands as his career's biggest hit with a worldwide gross of Rs.140 Crores.
For his fabulous performance in the film, NTR Jr. won an IIFA, Shankarabharam and SIIMA Awards for the Best Actor. In 2017, for the first time, NTR Jr. was seen in a triple role in the film 'Jai Lava Kusa' that was directed by K S Ravindra. The teaser of the film got a superb response and was one of the most viewed and liked teasers of Tollywood. This was the first time Tarak did a film in his brother's production, NTR Arts and also with director KS Ravindra (Bobby). The film turned out to be the second highest grosser in NTR's career.
Next, Tarak teamed up with magician of words Trivikram Srinivas for his next film. The film, titled Aravinda Sametha saw him pair up with svelte beauty Pooja Hegde for the first time. The film was produced by Haarika and Hassine Creations. For this film, the Young Tiger went with a complete makeover. He had trained under fitness Guru Lloyd Stevens and became his fittest yet.
