Nag Ashwin Early Life
Tollywood director Nag Ashwin was born to Jayaram Reddy a urologist and Jayanthi Reddy, a gynecologist in Hyderabad. Nag Ashwin was an inquisitive kid. He was an avid reader. Once in his childhood, he read the story of a pet and got involved in the story. He felt sad by the end of it.
Nag Ashwin has a knack for writing since his childhood. This can be evidenced by the fact that he participated in competitions like essay writing. He was also interested in debates, quiz, and individual sports like Badminton and Tennis. Nag Ashwin is a movie buff. He used to watch movies of various genres include Mayabazar, Narthanasala, and Star Wars.
At the same time he was writing for the school magazine, Nag Ashwin started a magazine in his vicinity on his own. He used to sell the magazine to his friends. When they gave positive feedback, he started to get interested in writing.
When the internet started to become available, Nag Ashwin started a website and coded it. Concentrating on the website, his scores in examinations started to fall. He then concentrated on studies and joined Manipal University to pursue Journalism and Mass Communications degree.
Nag Ashwin Early Career
Nag Ashwin went to New York and studied Cinematography for six months on the advice of his parents. Then he worked as an intern at a studio. He also specifically concentrated on Visual Effects. Once he returned to India, Nag Ashwin worked as an assistant director for the movie Nenu Meeku Telusaa? Later he joined Sekhar Kammula for the movies Leader and Life is Beautiful. During his days with Sekhar Kammula, he scouted for talent and new actors.
He then started a production company after Life is Beautiful and made ad films and documentaries. It is during one such work he met with the Dutt Sisters Priyanka and Swapna, the daughters of noted Tollywood producer C. Aswini Dutt. He made a short film for them. Titled Yaadon Ki Baraat, it was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013. During the time, he became friends with them. They encouraged him to write a script which eventually became Yevade Subrahmanyam, a landmark film in hero Nani's career.
Nag Ashwin Debut as Director
Nag Ashwin made his directorial debut with the coming of age drama Yevade Subrahmanyam. Nani started his success streak of 8 movies with this film. Vijay Devarakonda who went on to become a star hero played a pivotal role in this movie. Yevade Subrahmanyam received rave reviews and was recorded as a hit at the box office. Nag Ashwin's work as the director was praised by the critics and the audience alike.
With the success of Yevade Subrahmanyam, Nag Ashwin expressed his wish to make a movie about Mahanati Savithri. Initially, he intended that it was not until after few more movies that he should direct such an ambitious venture. But with the encouragement and interest of Swapna and Priyanka, Nag Ashwin took up Mahanati, the biopic of Savitri.

Nag Ashwin's second film Mahanati boasts of some of the most talented cast in a South Indian Film. Keerthy Suresh played the eponymous role of Savitri while Dulquer Salmaan was roped in to play the role of Gemini Ganeshan whom Savithri married. They are joined by Samantha, Vijay Devarakonda, Malavika Nair, and Shalini Pandey in crucial roles. Mohan Babu, Prakash Raj, Bhanupriya, Naga Chaitanya, Srinivas Avasarala, Naresh, acclaimed director Krish Jagarlamudi, and Sandeep Reddy Vanga in cameo roles as the who and who of Telugu Cinema of those days. Mahanati was a huge success at the box office and emerged as one of the biggest hit Telugu movies of 2018.

Nag Ashwin married producer and the daughter of Aswini Dutt. It was during the shoot of Yevade Subrahmanyam that they fell in love. They married with the consent and the blessing of their elders. The couple has a son named Rishi. Rishi is his favourite name because it appears friendly according to Nag Ashwin. Actor Vijay Devarakonda is his friend off the screen.
Nag Ashwin is an avid traveler. He has traveled the length and breadth of India.
