  • Mahesh Babu Early Life

Tollywood actor Mahesh Babu was born on 9 August 1975 to Ghattamaneni Krishna and Indira Devi as Ghattamaneni Mahesh Babu. His father is yesteryear Tollywood superstar and his mother is a housewife. He was fourth of the five children to his parents. His elder brother Ghattamaneni Ramesh was also an actor in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. Mahesh spent most of his childhood in Madras (now Chennai). He was taken care of by his maternal grandmother Durgamma. Ramesh Babu used to take care of Mahesh and his education as Krishna was busy with movies as he used to work three shifts at times.

Mahesh used to play cricket at VGP Golden Beach along with his siblings. His father Krishna made sure some of his shootings to be conducted in Madras VGP Universal Kingdom so that he would spend a few precious moments with Mahesh. Mahesh never revealed his father's name during his schooling so as to ensure peaceful school life as his father was a superstar during that time.

He was educated at St. Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Madras. Tamil hero Karthi was his schoolmate. Mahesh performed above average in education. He completed B. Com and obtained a bachelor's degree from Loyola College in Chennai. Mahesh cannot read or write Telugu script, though he can speak fluently, as he spent his childhood in Tamil Nadu. He has great memory power and remembers dialogues by just listening to them.

When he finally wanted to become a full-fledged actor, he went to Visakhapatnam and was trained in acting under L. Satyanand which went on for about four months. Being unable to read and write Telugu, he memorise the dialogues given by his directors during the dubbing phase of his films.

    Manjula Ghattamaneni

His father Krishna was the quintessential superstar of his time and a matinee idol. His mother Indira Devi was a housewife. He has an elder brother Ramesh Babu who oversaw his education during the absence of his father due to busy schedules. His elder sister Manjula Ghattamaneni shares a great rapport with him. It is said that they are partners in crime. He has another elder sister, Padmavathi, and a younger sister, Priyadarshini.

Mahesh’s mother and grandmother ensured that he had a very grounded upbringing in the days he was brought up in Madras. Even in school he never told anyone that father was a film star. He had a very special relationship with his grandmother. It is his grandmother who brought him up in Chennai. Mahesh had a great love for his mother. He always keeps himself available for her. When his daughter was born, Mahesh expressed that she was his mother herself. Recently he shared a picture of his daughter saying she resembles his mother and expressed happiness.

Mahesh has great relations with his brothers-in-law. Galla Jayadev, present Telugu Desam MP from Guntur and son of former Andhra Pradesh minister Galla Aruna, was married to Mahesh's elder sister Padmavathi (Padmapriya). Sanjay Swaroop is the husband of Manjula. Mahesh has a close relationship with their family. He supports Manjula during her movie ventures, latest of which is his voiceover work for her directorial debut, Manasuku Nachindi. Mahesh's younger sister, Priyadarshini, was married to Sudheer Babu. He is also a lead actor in Tollywood and debuted with the movie SMS (Siva Manasulo Shruthi). Mahesh encouraged Sudheer Babu and helps him in his career.

Senior actor and former hero Naresh is his stepbrother from the side of Vijaya Nirmala whom superstar Krishna married. Naresh's son, Naveen (Vijaya) Krishna is also an actor.

Mahesh Babu Love and Family Life

Superstar Mahesh is generally a private person. He is said to be shy and introvert. But those who know him personally can attest that he is a fun-loving person. On the sets of his third movie, Vamsi, Mahesh met former Miss India and Miss Universe runner-up Namrata Shirodkar, who played the female lead in the movie. According to Namrata, Mahesh was reserved and didn't talk to anyone. As she was new to Telugu films, she didn't know anyone. She slowly befriended him. Their thoughts and interests matched. Both have a down-to-earth persona off-screen and have an untarnished image when it came to matters of love. As the shoot of Vamsi progressed, Mahesh and Namrata became close.

Since Namrata was not a popular face down south, and hardly anyone knew Mahesh back then in North India, their romance was mostly not known even for the people in the industry. Although hints of their affair were regularly picked up by the media, the pair meticulously managed to ensure that it was kept under the wraps. It is said that Mahesh didn’t share anything about his relationship even with his parents, and he had poured this fact only to his sister Manjula with whom he is quite close.

Superstar Krishna was initially hesitant about this match though Namrata's parents accepted once they had met Mahesh. Krishna's reason was the difference in languages. Once Manjula convinced him of Mahesh and Namrata's love, things became easier. Despite a few objections from Mahesh's grandmother, things went smooth and this dream wedding happened.

Mahesh and Namrata have two children. Gautham Krishna, the first child was born in 2006, and Sitara their daughter was born in 2012. Mahesh keeps himself close to his children. Mahesh's son Gautham Krishna is also an actor - he acted in 1: Nenokkadine as the childhood character of Mahesh. The family goes on vacation every few months to foreign countries. As Mahesh said in an interview, after every two or three schedules, he goes abroad on vacation. New Zealand is his favourite holiday spot.

  • Mahesh Babu Career

    Mahesh As A Child Artist

Due to his father being a busy actor, Mahesh used to visit the sets with his brother to meet his father. One such visit led him to become an actor. Ramesh Babu was shooting for the movie Needa in the direction of Dasari Narayana Rao in the late 1970s. Mahesh went to the shoot of the movie with his brother. Director Dasari shot a few sequences with him as a part of the narrative. It became the first film he appeared on the big screen.

Mahesh four years later acted in Poratam (1983) in the direction of Kodi Ramakrishna in which his father played the lead role. After a gap of four years, in 1987 he acted in Sankharavam which is directed by Krishna himself. He had a starring role in the 1988 movie, Bazaar Rowdy. His elder brother Ramesh Babu was the hero in this movie. Bazaar Rowdy became a super hit. Next, he played a dual role of Nani and Surendra in Mugguru Kodukulu. Superstar Krishna directed this hit movie.

Gudhachari 117 followed in 1989, and he had another dual role in Koduku Diddina Kapuram. This superstar Krishna directorial saw him in a lead role for the first time. 1990 movies Anna Thammudu and Balachandrudu are the last films he had as a child artist. In the movie Balachandrudu, he was the solo lead actor. Mahesh enjoyed an unprecedented stardom and mass appeal as a child artist.

Mahesh Reentry And As A Lead Actor

In the year 1999, Mahesh made his debut as a lead actor with the film Raja Kumarudu. The movie is directed by K. Raghavendra Rao and is produced by Aswini Dutt after Krishna asked him to introduce Mahesh as a hero. Bollywood actress and Liril model Preity Zinta was his first heroine.

The film was commercially successful and established him as a star hero in Tollywood. Superstar Krishna had a cameo in that movie. After this movie, he became the Prince for fans. Mani Sharma composed the musical score for this film. The music became successful, setting the pattern for his whole career. He became the heartthrob of Tollywood on the verge of the new millennium.

2000 saw him in two movies. Yuvaraju directed by YVS Chowdary and Vamsi directed by B. Gopal. Yuvaraju fared average at the box office banking on the craze he attained with his first film. Vamsi in which he acted with his father bombed at the box office. He overcame the career setback with his next movie.

Murari directed by Krishna Vamsi was termed as a landmark film in his career. Mahesh called Murari an important film in his career and the role he played in it one of his favourites. Sonali Bendre was the heroine in the movie. The 2001 movie was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. His acting was praised for the first time, and deservedly he garnered a Special Jury Award at the state government Nandi Awards.

In 2002, Mahesh acted in two movies. Takkari Donga, a Telugu cowboy film in a long time, was directed by Jayant C. Paranji. Though the failed to lit up the box office, he received his second Nandi Special Jury Award. The movie made it big with the US Telugu audience. Bollywood actresses Bipasha Basu and Lisa Ray were the heroines in the movie. His second film of the year, Bobby directed by Sobhan, was another failure in his fledgling career. He paired up with Arti Agarwal, the heartthrob of that time.

Mahesh Babu First Blockbuster And Nandi Awards

He turned his fortune with the 2003 Sankranthi movie Okkadu. Hailed for its slick screenplay, Okkadu became a landmark film in Telugu. He won his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu for his performance in the film. This Gunasekhar directed movie was the first blockbuster in his career. M. S. Raju produced this movie. Bhumika Chawla was the heroine.

Director Teja, who was a sensation those days directed Mahesh in his next film. Nijam in which Rakshitha co-starred him was a commercial success despite mixed critical appraisal (in the words of director Teja). In spite of this, Mahesh received his first Nandi Award as the Best Actor. His power-packed performance and his scenes in combination with the acclaimed actress Talluri Rameswari were said to be the highlights of the movie.

In 2004 he acted in the science fiction comedy romance Naani. This S. J. Suryah directed movie was produced by his sister Manjula Ghattamaneni on Indira Productions. Naani was termed as a box office disappointment. Despite this, his performance as an eight-year-old boy received special applause. In the same year, his second movie in the direction of Gunasekhar, Arjun was released.

Arjun was produced by his elder brother, Ramesh Babu on Krishna Productions Private Ltd banner. The film was recorded as an above-average grosser at the box office. Shriya Saran was the lead lady in this movie while Keerthi Reddy acted as the sister of the title character played by Mahesh. He received Nandi Special Jury Award again for his intense performance.

2005 saw Mahesh in the movie Athadu. Directed by Trivikram Srinivas, this evergreen classic action-comedy became a big hit with the family audience and the youth. A commendable performer at the box office, Athadu was running very successfully in Maa TV for more than a decade and a half. Mahesh as a contract killer was at his glamorous and acting best. The action scenes in the movie deserve special mention. Trisha, whom Mahesh termed as one of his favourite actresses was the heroine in this movie. He received Nandi Award as the Best Actor in this movie for the second time.

    Industry Hit and Superstardom

Mahesh's next movie was Pokiri. This 2006 movie became an Industry Hit and was the highest-grossing Telugu movie for more than three years. This sensational hit saw Ileana opposite Mahesh. With this film, Mahesh attained superstardom and established himself as a top box office draw. Puri Jagannadh directed this movie co-produced by Manjula Ghattamaneni. The song Dole Dole composed by Mani Sharma is an iconic hit. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu for the second time.

His second release in 2006 was Sainikudu, his third film with Gunasekhar. The movie failed to repeat the magic of their previous films. He paired up with Trisha for the second time. She was the only heroine to act a second time with Mahesh until Samantha got the distinction with Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu. In 2007, Mahesh acted in Atithi. P. Surender Reddy directed this action thriller. The failure of this movie prompted Mahesh to take a break from films.

    Break From Films And Comeback

Mahesh intended to take a break from films for a few months. He later signed a movie with Trivikram Srinivas as director. Due to various reasons, the movie what would later become Khaleja was postponed multiple times, and it took him three years to come up with his next movie. In the interim, he studied various styles of acting and implemented them in his next films. He opened up in his acting style after this.

Khaleja was the first movie to come from Mahesh after the break. The 2010 movie saw Mahesh change his acting approach. He played the role of a chatterbox and excelled in various scenes as a brat. His dialogue delivery and acting were praised by critics. Change in his approach was noted by many critics positively. The movie was a failure at the box office but was a hit with the Television audience. Mahesh’s comic timing was a revelation in this movie. Anushka was the heroine. As is the norm for Mahesh movies, Khaleja performed very well in overseas markets.

Mahesh scored his first success after five long years with the movie Dookudu in 2011. Sreenu Vaitla directed this action-comedy. The director used Mahesh’s new-found dialogue delivery and openness in acting to the maximum and delivered an industry hit. Mahesh’s iconic comedy with M. S. Narayana still elicits laughter from the audience and set a benchmark for setpiece comedy. Samantha was the heroine in the movie, and their chemistry worked out big time. The Los Angeles Times called Dookudu the biggest hit you've never heard of. Mahesh received Nandi Award For Best Actor. He also won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu at the 59th Filmfare Awards South and 1st South Indian International Movie Awards ceremonies.

    Continuation of Success And Multi-Starrers

2012 saw Mahesh in Puri Jagannadh movie Businessman. Businessman was the one-man show of Mahesh. Critics acclaimed his role as Surya Bhaay, and wrote that his intense acting was what elevated the movie to the next level. He paired up with Kajal Aggarwal for the first time. The movie was recorded as a super hit at the box office. He played the role of a mafia kingpin with a hidden personal agenda in this film. By then, Mahesh was reported to be the second highest-paid actor in South India after Rajinikanth.

Multi-starrers became very rare in the top hero level. Mahesh reintroduced multi-starrers to Telugu audience with the movie Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu. He co-starred with Victory Venkatesh in that movie which has an ensemble cast. They both acted as brothers in this movie directed by Srikanth Addala. The scenes in their combination worked big time and the movie became a success and paved way for more multi-starrers involving top heroes. Samantha paired up with him for the second time in this movie.

With this movie’s success, for the first time in his career, Mahesh recorded three consecutive box office hits. Mahesh won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu at the 61st Filmfare Awards South ceremony. He also won Best Actor award at the 3rd South Indian International Movie Awards ceremony. Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu collected a distributor share of ₹550 million and was the second-highest-grossing Telugu film of the year.

    Highest Rated Indian Movie

Mahesh started 2014 with the psychological thriller, a rare genre in Telugu and even rarer for a top hero to act in such genre, in the direction of Sukumar. Sukumar who scored a hit with 100% Love met Mahesh in Goa and narrated the story revolves around the search by Gautham, a schizophrenic Indian rock musician missing 25 percent of his brain's grey matter, for his parents, whom he believes were murdered by three men. Kriti Sanon made her Tollywood debut with this movie.

1: Nenokkadine was the first neo-noir psychological thriller in Telugu, and one of the few at that time in South Indian Cinema. Released in Sankranthi season, 1: Nenokkadine failed at the box office. The movie received a negative response from the critics, and a section of the audience was not able to understand the puzzles in the movie. Despite all this, Mahesh’s performance received universal acclaim. Some critics even compared him to the best of Hollywood. The movie received positive words for its technical values.

1: Nenokkadine was at one time the highest rated Indian movie in IMDb (Internet Movie Database), and is still one of the highest rated South Indian movies. This movie performed superiorly in the overseas market, and surprisingly well-received by the foreign audience (not just NRIs).

    Mahesh Babu 2014-Now

His second release in 2014, Aagadu with Sreenu Vaitla failed to attract the audience despite being advertised as a mass comedy film. Mahesh's career received a setback with this movie.

He next teamed up with Koratala Siva. Siva fresh from the success of Mirch, came up with a sensible point, adoption of villages and developing them. The movie Srimanthudu saw Mahesh play the role of the son of a rich businessman, Harsha who strives to develop his native village despite the strong opposition from the villains. Mahesh's performance was received with great enthusiasm by the critics. Leaving aside Baahubali, Srimanthudu was the highest grossing Telugu movie at that time until it is surpassed by Khaidi No. 150.

Adopting villages, the core point of this movie inspired many people considering this. Mahesh himself adopted two villages. Shruthi Haasan paired up with Mahesh in this movie. The Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu at the 63rd Filmfare Awards South for Mahesh, marked his resurgence. N. Sethumadhavan of Bangalore Mirror stated Srimanthudu wouldn't have been as effective if it did not have Mahesh Babu who is at his charming best, adding that he underplays the emotional scenes, making them a treat to watch.

2016 saw Mahesh coming up with Brahmotsavam. Amidst high expectations, the movie bombed at the box office. This Srikanth Addala movie received overwhelmingly negative reviews. The film was criticized by the public, due to the lack of a proper story. Mahesh stated that this was an error of judgment, where he had picked the wrong director. Samantha for the third time and Kajal Agarwal for the second time paired up with Mahesh.

Mahesh made his Tamil debut with the A. R. Murugadoss directed bilingual movie Spyder. Released in both Telugu and Tamil with a Malayalam dubbed version, Spyder became a commercial failure despite being one of the highest grossing Telugu movies.

Mahesh later acted in the political thriller, Bharath Ane Nenu, directed by Koratala Siva. This is the second movie in their combination. Amidst high expectations, this movie released on 20 April 2018. Bharath Ane Nenuhad about 2000 premiers in the US. Bollywood starlet Kiara Advani is the heroine in the movie. The movie got generally positive reviews from the critics and Mahesh was praised for his performance as a young Chief Minister. Some of the decisions Mahesh's Bharath Ram took in this film were emulated by the real-world governments.

Mahesh Babu's silver jubilee movie (his 25th film as a lead actor) Maharshi hit the screens on 9 May 2019 with generally positive critical acclaim. The landmark film in his career was produced by Dil Raju, Aswini Dutt and PVP (Prasad V. Potluri). Pooja Hegde played the female lead and Allari Naresh acted as his friend. His performance received high critical acclaim and the film went on to become the biggest grosser in his career. Maharshi, alongside Srimanthudu and Bharath Ane Nenu, loosely forms the Society Trilogy.

Mahesh's 26th film is the mass entertainer Sarileru Neekevvaru directed by the successful young director Anil Ravipudi. The film marks the return to films of yesteryear lady superstar Vijayashanthi. Interestingly Vijayashanthi and Mahesh played a mother and son(s) in Mahesh's star vehicle as a child artist Koduku Diddina Kapuram. The movie is co-produced by Anil Sunkara, Dil Raju (Presenter) alongside G. Mahesh Babu Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

    Mahesh Babu Voiceover Work

Known for his friendly nature and having no ego, Mahesh had given voiceover to other hero movies. This started with Pawan Kalyan - Trivikram movie, Jalsa. Trivikram being a good friend, and Pawan Kalyan’s support for Mahesh during the piracy issue of his movie Arjun lead to this. He later gave voiceover to N. T. R. - Sreenu Vaitla movie Baadshah. Later he gave voiceover to his father superstar Krishna’s 50th-anniversary movie, Sri Sri. Recently he gave voiceover as Nature for Manjula Ghattamaneni’s directorial debut, Manasuku Nachindi.
