Dulquer Salmaan is a popular actor predominantly working in Malayalam cinema. Since his debut in 2012 with Second Show, Dulquer has appeared in about 20 movies. Dulquer’s most famous hits include Ustad Hotel (2012) Bangalore Days and Mani Ratnam’s romantic flick Ok Kanmani. He made his Tamil movie debut through Balaji’s bilingual Vaayai Moodi Pesavum. In 2015 he won the Kerala State Award for Best Actor for his performance in Charlie. Dulquer Salman is the son of Megastar Mammootty and Sulfath, Dulquer Salmaan was born in Kochi on 28th July 1986. He did his initial schooling at the Toc-H Public School, Kochi. Later, he continued his education at Sishya School, Chennai. He graduated in Business Management from Purdue University, USA. Dulquer worked for a while in the US after his studies. The actor opened a web portal for trading vintage cars as his first business venture. Later, he moved on to Dubai to pursue his business ambitions and stayed there for two years.

Dulquer Salmaan before making his entry into the film Industry attended a three-month acting course at the Barry John Acting Studio, Mumbai. The star-kid had already turned down offers from industry biggies like Linguswamy and Shyamaprasad for his debut. He was initially finalized to play the lead role in Shyamaprasad’s Rithu but dropped out later. In 2011, he joined hands with a newbie and started shooting for Second Show, the debut directorial venture of Srinath Rajendran. The movie released in 2012 was welcomed with positive reviews that gave confidence to the young actor Dulquer Salmaan and led him to win the Filmfare Award for the year's Best Debut. Dulquer's next film, Ustad Hotel, directed by Anwar Rasheed and written by Anjali Menon was a huge hit and became a break for his career. He then chose to do Roopesh Peethambaran’s edgy thriller titled Theevram as his third movie. Though not becoming a huge success at the B-O, the film enjoyed a cult following through the torrent circuit.
The actor Dulquer started to choose characters that suit his appearance and the next year he went on to star in films like ABCD – American Born Confused Desi (2013) by Martin Prakkatt and the anthology film Anchu Sundarikal. By then the actor has arisen to be a star. Dulquer then committed Sameer Thahir’s road movie, Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi which made him the heartthrob of youngsters. All films had a warm box office reception and the actor’s performances in these films were widely appreciated and accepted by the youngsters.
Dulquer starred in romantic flicks like Azhagappan’s Pattam Pole and Sharath Haridaasan’s Salala Mobiles in 2013. He also forayed into Kollywood with Balaji Mohan’s Vaayai Moodi Pesavum which was released in Malayalam as Samsaram Arogyathinu Haanikaram. Though the Tamil version became a hit, the film didn’t click with the Malayali audience.
In 2014, Anjali Menon’s family drama, Bangalore Days released. The film starred some of the most popular stars of Malayalam including Fahadh Faasil, Nazriya Nazim, Nithya Menen, Nivin Pauly and Dulquer Salmaan. The film went on to become a huge hit, grossing over Rs 50 Crore. The year saw Dulquer acting in Lal Jose’s Vikramadityan and Ranjith’s critically acclaimed Njaan.
Dulquer attained new heights in 2015 when he got to star in Mani Ratnam’s new age romantic drama, OK Kanmani. The film was made in Telugu as well as in Tamil. Dulquer, who was already a known name among the non-Malayali audience, achieved huge fan following due to the movie’s success. In the same year, he played Charlie in Martin Prakkatt’s movie with the same name with Parvathy as the female lead. The film became a super hit and moreover earned the actor his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor.
Sameer Thahir again collaborated with Dulquer with his venture titled ‘Kali’ (2016) and DQ had him paired opposite Premam heroine, Sai Pallavi. The movie proved to be a success and was followed by Kammattipaadam. Directed by Rajeev Ravi, the film was critically acclaimed and broke expectations when it ran in packed theatres. With Kammattipadam, Dulquer showcased his matured acting skills and won the hearts of Mollywood movie buffs.
The year 2017 had this young talented actor featured in the evergreen director-writer Sathyan Anthikad's family drama Jomonte Suvisheshangal. In Jomonte Suviseshangal, Dulquer played Mukhesh's son and the combo became a hit at the box office. He then appeared in Amal Neerad's romantic action film Comrade In America which became his biggest hit of 2017. He then portrayed four roles in the bilingual anthology Solo (2017) directed by Bejoy Nambiar. The film was critically panned and faced an immense backlash from the audience.
Dulquer has completed filming for his Hindi debut movie Karwaan with Irrfan Khan as he awaits the release of multi-lingual biopic titled Mahanati, Tamil romantic comedy Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal. The latest to his cart is Abhishek Sharma's film adaptation of Anuja Chauhan's novel The Zoya Factor that will mark his second Bollywood venture and also has bagged projects with Ra Karthik, Jai Singh, Salaam Bukhari and Lal Jose. With these Dulquer Salman becomes one of the top Mollywood actors to have acted in the most number of Non-Malayalam movies.
