Diana Penty is one of the most successful Indian models. She began her acting career with Homi Adajania's romantic comedy Cocktail in 2012 which also starred Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. Apart from acting and modeling, she has also featured on several magazine covers including Vogue, Elle and Women's Health India.
Diana Penty Modelling Career
Diana Penty was studying in college when she sent her photos to Elite Models India, where they liked her photos and asked her to take up a career in modeling. Reluctant on giving up on her education, she started working part-time as a model for the same company and made her debut on the ramp in 2005 for the Indo-Italian Festival for Italian designers Nicola Trussardi and Gianfranco Ferré. Soon after, she started working with eminent Indian designers like Wendell Rodricks, Rohit Bal, and Rina Dhaka and by 2007, she established herself as a model, working for huge Indian brands like Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri, Parachute, and Westside and also went on to appear on the cover of various Indian magazines.
In 2008, she started representing many International brands including Maybelline, Garnier and Forever 21. She became one of the most versatile models and was working with the biggest of brands and designers. Between 2008 and 2010, she was offered many Bollywood films but rejected them thinking that she was not ready for acting and went on to establish herself as a model for the Paris and New York Fashion Weeks.
Diana Penty Acting Debut
Diana was first offered the lead role in Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar with Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. She had to reject this role due to a busy schedule and was replaced by another model making her acting debut, Nargis Fakhri. Imtiaz then suggested that Diana audition for Homi Adjania’s film Cocktail, a romantic comedy. She bagged the role and starred in this 2012 film along with Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone where she played the role of an Indian woman named Meera who married an NRI and travels to London to live with her husband, only to be left abandoned.
Her performance in this film was praised by all the critics and the film went on to be a critical and commercial success. The actress was also nominated for several awards, including the Best Female Debut awards at the Filmfare.
Four Year Break
After the success of Cocktail, Diana took a four-year break from acting and was only seen in commercials. When asked about it, she stated that the break was not intentional but she did not find the right script to get back to acting.
Return To Acting
Diana then made a comeback to acting in 2016 with the film Happy Bhaag Jayegi opposite Abhay Deol and Jimmy Shergill where she played the titular role of Happy, a girl who runs away from an arranged marriage, only to land up in Pakistan. The film was produced by Aanand L Rai and her performance was well appreciated and the film turned out to be one of the sleeper hits of 2016.
She then starred in the 2017 film Lucknow Central along with Farhan Akhtar where she played the role of an NGO worker who has to form a band with the inmates of a jail. The film released on September 17th and performed well at the box office.
In the year 2018, she starred opposite John Abraham in Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran which told the story of the real-life nuclear testings done by the Indian Army at the Pokhran district of Rajasthan, turning India into a nuclear state. Diana played the role of a tough army official named Capt. Ambalika who is one of the team members that conducts these tests. The film also stars Boman Irani and was initially slated to release in December of 2017, but due to many controversies involving producers John Abraham and Prernaa Arora, it kept getting postponed and finally released on 25th May 2018.
In the same year, it was also confirmed that Diana will return as Harpreet Kaur a.k.a Happy in the sequel to Happy Bhaag Jayegi titled Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi. This film also stars Sonakshi Sinha and Ali Faizal who will be taking the story forward.
