Ajith Kumar Career
After putting an end to his textile business, Ajith moved completely into acting in ads and thus accepted his first film as a lead, a Telugu film titled ‘Prema Pusthakam’ (1993) where Bollywood actress Kanchan was paired opposite to him. The film had a heart-wrenching back story to it. The director of the film, Gollapudi Srinivas died while shooting the film and it was later completed by his father Gollapudi Maruthi Rao, a well-known writer and character artist in Telugu movies. Notably, as an ode to the young director, Gollapudi Srinivas National Award is given to acclaimed filmmakers every year.
Despite his debut movie as a lead being a big disaster at the box office, offers didn’t stop knocking at Ajith’s door. His first Tamil film as the lead hero, 'Amaravathi' (1993) as well wasn’t a big success but got him good recognition in the Tamil Industry. After small appearances in films like 'Paasamalargal' (1994) and 'Rajaavin Paarvayile' (1995), Ajith bagged a huge success in the form of 'Asai' (1995), a film that marked the directorial debut of P.C Sreeram. 'Vaanmathi' (1996), his next film after Asai also went on to become a big success and made him the Superstar overnight. Another successful film that came at the very early stage of his career was 'Kaadhal Kottai' (1996) that fetched Agasthyan a National Award for Best Direction and Screenplay. Around this time, considering his huge stardom, Amitabh Bachchan’s production company ABCL ventured into the South with 'Ullassam' (1997), a triangular love drama where Ajith shared screen with 'Chiyan' Vikram and Maheshwari.
With each passing year, Ajith bagged back to back hits. For the record, in a single year (1999), the actor gave 6 super hit films. One of the films that include on the list is, S.J Suryah’s blockbuster directorial 'Vaali' (1999). He was praised highly by all the critics for his unparalleled performance in dual roles. The film earned him his first Filmfare Best Actor Award. In the same year, he appeared in a romantic musical drama ‘Amrakalam’ which played a crucial role in his personal life. During the making of this film, he fell in love with the film’s leading lady Shalini, whom he married the very next year. In 2002, Ajith accepted his first Hindi project ‘Asoka’ directed by popular cinematographer Santhosh Sivan. He played a negative role of Susima Maurya alongside Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
In 2003, he took a small break from movies and concentrated on his eternal love, motor racing. He has also announced back then that he would do just two films in a year as it gives more time for racing. He performed exceptionally well in BMW Asia Championship, 2003 that was held in Thailand, Japan and Korea.
After delivering a blockbuster with Chandramukhi (2005), director P. Vasu teamed up with Ajith for 'Paramasivan' (2006) where Ajith lost around 20 kilos to play the character. 'Valaraaru' that came at the end of 2006, earned Ajith his third Filmfare Best Actor Award. Unfortunately, most of the movies that were released around this time tanked at the box-office until 'Billa' (2007) came to his rescue where he was seen in dual role again.
As aforementioned, the year 2007 brought back all the faltering glory of Ajith in the form of ‘Billa’. The Vishnuvardhan directorial that released in December 2007 became a sensational hit. Ajith played a stylish don in this modern day presentation of Rajinikanth starrer of the same name. In the following years, not many of Ajith’s movies released except 'Aegan' (2008) and 'Aasal' (2010) which turned out to be big disappointments in his career. After a long hiatus, in 2010, the actor starred in his 50th film ‘Mankatha’ which had a grand opening at the box-office. This black comedy action entertainer featured a bunch of top actors of Kollywood including Arjun Sarja, Trisha, Andrea Jeremiah, Vaibhav Reddy among others.
In 2012, Chakri Toleti directed 'Billa 2’ featuring Ajith as a don yet again. The film didn’t do well as it failed to meet the expectations set by its 2007 prequel ‘Billa’. Thereafter, the actor has been very choosy in terms of his films and characters. In the second half of 2012, he appeared in a guest role in the Tamil version of Sridevi’s comeback movie 'English Vinglish' (2012). In the year 2012, he even featured in the Forbes India Magazine at the 66th position.
From 2013, the actor started to appear in one film per year. His first outing in 2013 ‘Aarambam’ released in October and opened to positive talk. Yet again, Vishnu Vardhan has succeeded in portraying Ajith in a larger than life role. The movie stands as the first movie to gross Rs. 100 Crores in Ajith's career. Post Aarambam, Ajith did back to back films with director Siva, 'Veeram' (2014), 'Vedhalam' (2015) and Vivegam (2017), all of which have grossed above Rs. 100 Crores. Notably, he did one film Yennai Arindhaal (2015) with director Gautham Vasudev Menon in between these three films and this movie too cracked above Rs.100 Crores as well.
