Watch 15 Trendsetting Costume Design Works Of Manish Malhotra

Be it a film, an event or a wedding which heroine doesn’t want to wear a Manish Malhotra creation. One of India's most successful fashion designers, he has been ruling the roost in Bollywood for the last two decades by making actresses look stunning on screen. His ability to design styles suiting characters has been phenomenal. Designing costumes for heroines like Urmila Matondkar, Madhuri Dixit, Kajol, Karisma Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherji, Aishwarya, Priyanka Chopra…you name them and Manish has them on his ever-growing list. We look at some of the songs where his creations have not only added to the picturization of it but have become trendsetters.

  1. Tanha Tanha (Rangeela - 1995)

    Probably, Manish’s first film where he gave Urmila a makeover which added to the success of this Ram Gopal Varma love-triangle. The outfits of Urmila in every song left audiences asking for more. A lot of actresses started wearing what she wore in the 'Tanha Tanha' song sung by Asha Bhosle to the tune of AR Rahman.
  2. Tujhe Dekha To Ye Jaana Sanam (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge - 1995)

    Well, what is left to be said about Kajol’s costumes in ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’. Every song and costumes was a landmark but the ‘Mehendi laga ke rakhna’ song took the cake where she wears a green lehenga created by Manish which became the national dress for all wedding brides in India. ‘Tujhe dekha’ too saw the actress donning a few unforgettable creations of the designer.

  3. Dholna (Dil To Pagal Hai – 1997)

    Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Maya’ played by Madhuri in this Yash Chopra triangle love story had her donning Manish’s best ever Indianised outfits. The suits and sarees fitted her o the T as Lata Mageshkar and Udit Narayan crooned to the tune of Uttam Singh which was penned by Anand Bakshi.

  4. Kathai Aankhon Wali (Duplicate - 1998)

    Juhi Chawla looked mesmerizing in these Manish Malhotra outfits which makes Shahrukh croon this song where Kumar Sanu lends his voice to Anu Malik’s tunes.

  5. Humko Humise Chura Lo (Mohabbatein – 2000)

    Another Yashraj production which saw the mysterious Aishwarya romancing Shahrukh in the very best of chiffons. Rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan, the song was composed by Jatin Lalit and written by Anand Bakshi.

  6. Shukriya Shukriya (Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai – 2000)

    Aishwarya was at her peak that year with Manish becoming synonymous with every film of hers. The former Miss World was at her gorgeous best in this film which had beautiful locations to go with this song. Sung by Udit Narayan Jha and Alka Yagnik, it was composed by Sanjeev-Darshan.

    Suraj Hua Maddham was picturized at breath-taking locales and adding to the value of the song was Kajol’s ravishing costumes. This chartbuster song was sung by Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam and set to the tune of Jatin Lalit and Sandesh Shandilya.

  9. Saathiya (Saathiya – 2002)

    Rani’s dresses were in contrast to the locations of this Gulzar song. Every creation that Rani donned had the Manish Malhotra stamp on it. Sung by Sonu Nigam and composed by A.R. Rahman, the number has become one of Sonu’s signature tunes, over the years.

    This wedding special song had Preity Zinta wearing a sky blue lehenga by the designer which saw a lot of brides donning it for their own weddings. The song became a chartbuster which helped Preity bag that years Filmfare trophy for ‘Best Actress’. Sung by Sadhana Sargam, Sujata Bhattacharya, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam & Shankar Mahadevan and composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy.
  11. Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha (Main Hoon Na - 2004)

    Sushmita never looked so good in any other film since she became Miss Universe. Playing a college lecturer, she had to look simple and glamorous which she did with élan in every frame of this Farah Khan directorial debut film. Sung by Abhijeet and Shreya Ghosal it had music by Anu Malik.

  12. Tumhi Dekho Na (Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna – 2006)

    This romantic number showcases Rani at her dressing best on-screen with Shah Rukh Khan. Every creation of the designer was in sync with the props and background to go with it. Rendered by Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik and composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, the song continues to haunt listeners even after a decade of its release.
  13. Desi Girl (Dostana – 2008)

    Girls and boys went gaga over desi girl Priyanka’s designer saree who got wooed by John and Abhishek in this number as both fall for her. Sung by Shankar Mahadevan, Sunidhi Chauhan & Vishal Dadlani, it was penned by Kumaar and composed by Vishal & Shekhar.
  14. Zoobi Doobi (3 Idiots – 2009)

    Kareena Kapoor just looked so amazing in the saree making temperatures soar in this song crooned by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal. The song was penned by Swanand Kirkire and set to the tune of Shantanu Moitra.
  15. Sadka (I Hate Luv Storys – 2010)

    Arguably, the first time that Sonam Kapoor looked so seductive in this Manish Malhotra creation. Imran Khan falls in love as he is mesmerized and smitten by Sonam in this number. Sung by Suraj Jagan & Mahalaxmi Iyer and set to the tune of Vishal & Shekhar, many considered this song picturization to be the highlight of the film.
  16. Teri Meri Prem Kahani (Bodyguard - 2011)

    This song became the highlight of the film where Kareena in a black chiffon expresses her agony of not getting Salman’s love. Set to the tune of Himesh Reshammiya, the song was sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal.
