From Bengali Cinema

2. Rainbow Jelly
A beautiful fairytale. The story of Ghoton who resorts to fantasy to escape from the harsh life with his uncle. He had to leave school. He dreams of finding a treasure which he thinks is hidden somewhere inside. The sudden arrival of his fairy godmother makes his life colorful. She tells him of a plan to change his uncle. The direction is brilliant and the narration has a subtle warmth to it. If you're a child at heart, this is the movie you have been waiting for a long time. Cinderella? Snow-White? Okay! Indian Cinema has Rainbow Jelly.
From Hindi Cinema
Enough of fairytales. Now it's time for not-a-fairytale. The story of the two year old Pihu is the worst nightmare that can happen to any child anywhere in the world where the relationships are gradually deteriorating. Apartment complexes, as safe they are from a certain way, took people further away from each other.
Pihu wakes up and finds herself alone. Her mother is sleeping. She tries to wake her up but there's no use. She gets hungry. She has to cook food. There's a microwave oven. See, scene after scene our heart comes into our throats watching the predicaments of Pihu played with nonchalant innocence by Myra Vishwakarma. This is one of this writer's two personal favourites this year and the one he had got no chance of writing a review. Watched it later after several trials. Don't miss this gem. But be prepared for a gutwrenching experience.
2. Bhavesh Joshi Superhero
The vigilante action film Bhavesh Joshi Superhero is a truly underrated and underappreciated movie. The Vikram Aditya Motwane directorial tells the story of three youngsters who are highly social conscious and want to champion the common man. Bhavesh and his friend Siku takes this even more seriously and comes in the path of a local politician who kills one of them.
The other has no choice but to deliver justice. There starts this powerful non-caped crusader who has nothing but the love for his friend to fight against the criminals. Leave aside reviews. Just go and watch this beauty. You can watch Bhavesh Joshi Superhero full movie here.
You might have known a bit more about this film than the others in this list because it stars Varun Dhawan. But this is making a case for this film to convince you to watch it. The story of a boy who looks after a girl who is in a comatose state. Love, in its essence, is shown in this deliberately paced film. A love story unlike any other. As much as the dialogues, it is the silence that speaks to the audience. The Shoojit Sircar directorial October is a film to be celebrated by one and all. If you have not watched it, just go and watch. You'll savor the experience. You can stream October full movie here.
From Malayalam Cinema
1. Ee Maa Yove
What a film it is! That's what you'll say when you watch it. Or may not like it at all. But you cannot ignore the emotions induced by Ee Maa Yove in your heart. A son's promise to give his father a proper funeral after this death and how and if he fulfills this despite his financial struggles form the rest of the story. The Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial is truly experimental and soul stirring. And a must watch nonetheless. But be warned. The director long ago declared he makes films for himself.
This is a case of a movie much talked about in Kerala and known to most of the Malayalam movie buffs. But it's truly underrated and is not known to the audience from the other states. This Prasobh Vijaya directorial tells the story of Lilli, played by the highly talented Samyuktha Menon who charmed the audience in Theevandi, a heavily pregnant lady who is expecting to deliver her child in a couple of weeks. She is kidnapped by three men who are ready to harm her. Another gutwrenching entry in this list. But highly recommended nonetheless. Watch Lilli full movie on Nexflix.
From Tamil Cinema
1. Merku Thodarchi Malai
Vijay Sethupathi outdid himself by producing this highly non-commercial film directed by Leninbharathi. The film tells the story of a group of people who live in the interior regions of the Western Ghats. Well received by the critics and may be known to the audience from other languages courtesy the fame of Vijay Sethupathi, but not many might not have watched this masterclass. Don't miss Merku Thodarchi Malai after reading this. This movie gives you a fulfilling experience. Watch Merku Thodarchi Malai full movie here.
2. Iravukku Aayiram Kangal
A murder. Several people are involved with it in one way or the other. This Mu. Karan directorial is not a simple film in any way. The film takes us through a series of events that are instigated by the said murder. All happens in a single night. Breathtakingly brilliant and shockingly good, Iravukku Aayiram Kangal is a proof that Tamil Cinema is capable of delivering one good thriller after another without a gap. Watch this and pray for it not to be remaked in other languages. Iravukku Aayiram Kangal full movie is available here.
From Telugu Cinema
1. Chi La Sow
A talented young actor turns director and grabs a failed young hero from a prominent family as the protagonist in it. What message this sends to the audience? Roundly ignored by many but so good nonetheless Chi La Sow, the Rahul Ravindran directorial tells the story of a guy who just wants to enjoy life but is pestered to enter wedlock by his mother. He meets a subtly beautiful girl and she is in a desperate need of marrying. What transpires between them includes a visit to the police station and is funnily serious and seriously funny. A must watch.
Manu is a thriller filled with twists and suspense. The film is basically a love story of Nila and Manu which takes unexpected turns because of some events. What is expected to be a poetic romance film turns into a thrilling revenge drama which is presented in a different manner by the director Phanindra Narsetty.
Manu would've been a great film if only it had the perfect concoction of various genres like romance, thriller, and mystery. However, Manu can still be watched for the cinematic experience it offers. And it is the highest funded crowdfunding film made in Telugu. Manu is a cult film for some and a bore-fest for others. But you can't deny the fact that it is a well made movie and might have worked well if a bit differently presented. If enough demand generates, the makers may release in the streaming sites. Your choice guys!
Tummbbad worked out very well at the box office and is known for many regular movie buffs from all over India. The buzz was also great. But as we had to skip it in the article 5 Gems of Indian Cinema, it finds its place as a special film here.
