Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya!
Is a genuine blockbuster among all direct OTT releases for all parties. The only other film to have this distinction is Dil Bechara but Sushant Singh factor played its part. But the Venkatesh Maha directorial of a Praveena Paruchuri production has nothing but it's own merits to bank on.
If we consider all the films, there are only three unanimous hits among the direct OTT releases since the lockdown due to Covid-19 pandemic happened. Rest of the films might have been profitable for the makers with good deals and accumulated views over time to become profitable for the OTT streaming apps. But not by much. Surprisingly unsurprising thing is all the three outright hits (both critical, bringing profits to OTTs too) have a Malayalam connection.
Among those movies is Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya which made a star out of Satya Dev and introduced us to the exhilarating talent like Roopa Koduvayur. The highly acclaimed remake of the Malayalam instant classic Maheshinte Pratheekaram not just scored well with critics and the OTT watchers but also made the lead pair household names thanks to their appeal to the family audience. The proof is its success on television premiere. It receives a considerably good TRP rating for a film that's mostly a multiplex-style of release.
For its part, Netflix has scored back to back big hits like Penguin (critical failure) and Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya (a blockbuster to be frank). Films like this augur well for the OTTs and one of the rare few films which actually enhanced the reputation of Tollywood among streaming giants where nowadays the makers have been dumping unworkable movies. Even Natural Star Nani's V couldn't escape the criticism.
