List Of Top 20 Highest Grossing Bengali Movies of All Time

If Bengal is known for its Rosogulla’s, Mishti Doi, Macher Jhol and Rabindra Sangeet, then Bengali film industry is not far behind. Though on an average nearly 50 movies of various genres release every year at the Tollywood box-office, a mere ten percent of them succeed.

Tollywood’s Bengali cinema currently is trying to reinvent itself by producing more content driven movies but the fact remains the results are not encouraging enough to write home about. However, like other film industries, Tollywood’s Bengali cinema too has its list of top grosser’s over the years which have earned big money, worldwide. Let’s take a look at the top 20 highest grossing Bengali movies of all time:

  • Chander Pahar (2013) - Rs. 20 Crore

    Director Kamaleshwar Mukhodpadhayay’s Chander Pahar starring Dev is the highest Bengali movie grosser of all time. Based on Bibhutibhusan Bandopadhyay’s 1909 novel of the same name, the film went on to break all the past box-office records of Kolkata film industry or Tollywood. Made on a budget of nearly 2 crores, the adventure flick went on to gross nearly 20 crores with a 50-day successful run at the box-office.

  • Saathi (2002) - Rs. 9.78 Crore

    Talk about Bengali movie box office collections and the Jeet starrer Saathi is up there with the best. Jeet made his debut with this musical romantic which also starred Priyanka Trivedi and Ranjit Mallick and was directed by Haranath Chakraborty. The film not only won many hearts but also became one of the highest grossing Bangla movies of 2002. It earned a cool 9.78 crore at the box-office, worldwide.

  • Boss: Born to Rule (2013) - Rs. 6.75 Crore

    Boss: Born to Rule released in 2013 was a crime thriller starring Jeet and Subhashree which was directed by Baba Yadav. The film was a remake of the Telugu film ‘Businessman’ which starred Mahesh Babu and Kajal Aggarwal. The combo of Baba and Jeet spelled success at the box-office as it earned 6.75 crores in all.

  • Rangbaaz (2013) - Rs. 9.00 Crore

    Bengali box-office collections are incomplete without mentioning Rangbaaz. Directed by Raja Chanda, Rangbaaz was a box-office stunner which starred Dev, Koel Mallick and Rajatava Dutta and was shot extensively in Thailand. The deadly stunts and high octane action sequences pulled in the crowds on a continuous basis as it collected about 9 crores at the box-office, worldwide.

  • Awara (2012) - Rs. 8.50 Crore

    Jeet’s Awara was a remake of the Telugu superhit movie Krishna starring  Ravi Teja and Trisha Krishnan in the lead. Released in 2012, Awara was a romantic action comedy which also starred Sayantika Banerjee, Mukul Dev and Ashish Vidyarthi in pivotal roles. Directed by Ravi Kinnagi and produced under the banner of Shree Venkatesh Films, it collected a decent 8.50 crore at the box-office.

  • Badsha - The Don (2016) - Rs. 7.56 Crore

    Superstar Jeet was back in business with this action-packed thriller which had Nusrat Faria and Shraddha Das as the female leads. Directed by Baba Yadav and Abdul Aziz, Badsha – The Don did extremely good business in Bangladesh. A remake of the 2010 Telugu movie ‘Don Seenu,’ ‘Badsha’ was produced by Eskay Movies and Jaaz Multimedia and collected 7.56 crore in all.

    Paran Jai Jaliya Re features in the list of top 10 grossers of Bengali movies. Released in 2009 starring Dev and Subhashree Ganguly, this romantic drama was a remake of the Akshay Kumar-Katrina Kaif starrer Namastey London. Paran Jai Jaliya Re was directed by Ravi Kinnagi and went on to rake in 9.50 crore worldwide.

  • Praktan (2016) - Rs. 8.50 Crore

    Praktan went on to take box-office Kolkata by storm. Starring the hit pair of Prosenjit Chatterjee and Rituparna Sengupta, this romantic drama was directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy and received a huge reception on its release. The film went on to become the highest grossing movie of the year 2016 as it earned a neat 8.50 crore, worldwide.

  • Zulfiqar (2016) - Rs. 7.50 Crore

    This multi-starrer gangster flick by Srijit Mukherji was based on the adaptation of two of William Shakespeare’s tragedies: Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra, the end product was a super hit. A huge ensemble of star cast including Prosenjit Chatterjee, Dev, Jisshu Sengupta, Parambrata Chatterjee, Ankush Hazra, Kaushik Sen, Zulfiqar earned a good 7.50 crore at the box-office.

    Srijit Mukherji’s mysterious thriller starring Prosenjit, Aryaan, Indraneil Sengupta and Swastika Mukherjee was a winner from day one. Prosenjit played Kakababu in this Durga Puja release of 2013 which hit the jackpot to become that year’s biggest Puja earner. Prosenjit’s Kakababu act with a crutch in one hand and iPad in another got in the crowds as it helped the flick earn 7 crore.

    Yeti Obhijaan released on the 22nd September 2017 added another feather to Prosenjit’s career. This mysterious adventure yet again saw Kakababu and Santu on the screen. Though this Srijit Mukherjee film is still running to packed houses it has earned 5 crore, so far.

  • Paglu (2011) - Rs. 9.92 Crore

    Paglu, this romantic comedy flick makes it to the list of one of the highest grossing Bengali movies of all time. A remake of the hit Telugu film Devadasu starring Ram and Ileana, Paglu starring Dev, Koel Mallick, and Rajatava Dutta was a runaway hit too in Bengal and Bangladesh which was directed by Rajib Biswas and earned nearly Rs. 10 crore, worldwide.

    The highest grossing movie of 2017, Posto starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Lily Chakravarty, Jisshu Sengupta, Mimi Chakraborty, Paran Bandopadhyay was directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy. The family drama was based on Suchitra Bhattacharya's short story Mohonbil which received critical acclaim at the box-office as it went on to earn a good 8 crore, worldwide.

  • Challenge (2009) - Rs. 6.80 Crore

    Produced under the banner of Shree Venkatesh Films and directed by Raj Chakraborty, this romantic comedy-drama starring Dev and Subhashree Ganguly was a sleeper hit of that year. The film was a remake of the 2005 Telugu film ‘Bunny’ starring Allu Arjun. Challenge was extensively shot in Dubai and went on to make a decent 6.80 crore at the box-office.

  • Bhalobasa Bhalobasa (2008) - Rs. 6.50 Crore

    A remake of the Telugu super hit film Bommarillu, Bhalobasa Bhalobasa directed by Ravi Kinnagi saw the second time pairing of Hiran Chatterjee and Srabanti Chatterjee on screen. The romantic drama film was an instant hit and went on to earn 6.50 crore at the box-office.

  • Byomkesh O Chiriyakhana (2016) - Rs. 4.50 Crore

    Bengal’s favourite sleuth Byomkesh was back in action with Byomkesh O Chiriyakhana. Directed by Anjan Dutt, the fifth installment of Byomkesh series served as a sequel to Byomkesh Bakshi which was based on Chiriyakhana by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. The flick collected a decent 4.50 crore at the box-office.

  • Khoka 420 (2013) - Rs. 9.00 Crore

    One of the biggest Tollywood hit films, Khoka 420 produced under the Eskay Movies banner had Dev playing the rusty Khokababu who charms his way to your heart with a bagful of tricks. Dev was seen wooing two women – Subhashree and Nusrat which was one of the highlights of this action-comedy. Khoka 420 was directed by Rajib and went on to collect a good 9 crore at the box- office.

  • Rajkahini (2015) - Rs. 7.00 Crore

    Srijit Mukherjee’s Rajkahini was made on a budget of Rs 3.5 crore and earned double at the box-office. Rituparna Sengupta’s act as the head of a brothel helped her grab all the popular awards that year. With a hoard of female actresses playing their part to perfection, the film went to become that year’s most talked about and shocking film. It was later remade by Srijit in Bollywood as Begum Jaan which starred Vidya Balan.

  • Amazon Obhijaan (2017) - Rs. 48.63 Crore

    Dev as Shankar was back with Amazon Obhijaan in 2017, the sequel to Chander Pahar (2013). The action-adventure film written and directed by Kamaleshwar Mukherjee went on to become the highest grossing Bengali film ever which was dubbed and released in five languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Odia and Assamese. Amazon Obhijaan just didn’t become Bengal’s biggest blockbuster but also the first Bengali film to get a theatrical release in the United Kingdom. Made on a budget of nearly Rs. 20 Crore, Amazon Obhijaan’s lifetime worldwide collection stood at Rs. 48.63 Crore.

  • Khokababu (2011) - Rs. 6.25 Crore

    Khokababu starring Dev, Subhashree Ganguly, Ferdous and Laboni Sarkar was the remake of the Telugu hit film Dhee. The romantic comedy directed by Shankar Aiyya managed to rake in about 6.25 crore at the box-office, thus, making it the 3rd highest weekend collection film in Bengal that year.
