Hits, flops. Success, failure. Good times, bad times. Luck, no luck. Love, hate. Fans, anti-fans. No! Nothing matters to him. Like he said through one of his characters in his signature film Neninthe, all Puri Jagannadh cares for is Cinema. Rest? Doesn’t matter. He had delivered blockbusters. Made careers to stars. Made stars superstars. And has seen it all in his life. That’s why his films always brim with philosophical thoughts despite the apparent roguishness of his protagonists and carelessness of the characterisations he gives them.
And then there are undercurrent themes in his films which progress from one film to another unconnected film. We have analysed all the themes both visible and undercurrent (sometimes have to read between the lines) themes of Puri Jagannadh movies, and found that there are 5 thematic trilogies in his filmography. Here is a short description of all. Enjoy!
How many of you had fallen in love with the relationship between Jayasudha as mother and Ravi Teja as son in Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi? Haven’t you got goosebumps when Ravi Teja thumpingly declares to the antagonist, he’s my father - pointing at Prakash Raj? Finer emotions are not generally attributed to Puri films. But nobody knows the actual realities of family relations than Puri Jagannadh. Just look at these films. Remember the scene in Ek Niranjan where Kangana tells Prabhas that she loves him?
Even though we remember cop and Puri Jagannadh in connection with Pokiri, Puri has explored this concept inside out in three other films. Sivamani! An individualistic police officer with an attitude and his personal goal. Love life. Golimaar! A police officer who works inside and outside of the system for society. Temper! A bad cop turns good and shows how to punish those who violate women. How to respect one half of the sky!
Not particular theme here. But Puri Jagannadh connects with few places and try to promote those places in his films. Bangkok. Pattaya. Of course, in Thailand. But his exotic contribution comes to and from Spain. Films made/shot in Spain.
The Scamp Trilogy
This is the biggest and most important of all his trilogies. We have written a complete article in it. Just hit the link (Puri Jagannadh Scamp Trilogy). A feast for Puri Jagannadh fans. And film buffs.
And Mafia Trilogy
Puri has a peculiar vision of having Mafia being eradicated but one person restarts it from scratch. A heroic adventure for him a mafia story is. It’s still incomplete. We don’t know when and if the third film will come out.
Haha! That’s it for now.
