Telugu People Who've Been Honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award

Tollywood is one of the biggest cinema industries in India. But, it didn’t become one overnight. It took the efforts of many Telugu people to bring it to this stage. Such people have been honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award which is the highest award in Indian Cinema. This award was introduced by Government of India to recognise the efforts of Dadasaheb Phalke, who is the father of Indian Cinema. The Directorate of Film Festivals chooses and gives away this prestigious award to select people. So far 46 Phalkes have been given away of which 6 were awarded to Telugu personalities. Here is the list of those dedicated Telugu people who have been felicitated with this award:

  1. Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy (1974)

    Director and producer Narasimha Reddy was the first South Indian to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award. His movies Bangaru Papa, Bhagya Rekha, Rangula Ratnam and Malliswari are some of his best directorials. This pioneer was also awarded the Doctor of Letters and the Padma Bhushan award. His last directorial ‘Bangaru Panjaram’ won the Filmfare Best Film award.

  2. Paidi Jairaj (1980)

    Paidi Jairaj is an Indian actor and director. He acted in innumerable movies. His notable appearance are in Sholay, Don and Muqaddar ka Sikandar. Though he was born in Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh (now in Telangana), he didn’t act in any telugu movies. He directed three movies before he passed away in 2000. For his contribution to the Indian cinema industry, he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1980.

  3. L. V. Prasad (1982)

    Lakshmi Vara Prasad is the man who redefined Telugu Cinema. His dedication for Tollywood cannot be quantified. He is seen as a success story in T’wood. He went to Bombay (now Mumbai) with a meager amount and returned back to his hometown with an empire. His directorial such as Missamma, Shavukar and Appu Chesi Pappu Koodu are some of the best Telugu movies ever. Government of India released a postage stamp in his memory.

  4. B. Nagi Reddy (1986)

    Bommireddy Nagi Reddy was a prominent producer. He founded first most prominent Tollywood production house Vijaya Vauhini Studios. His gutsiness should be admired as not many showed interest in investing their money and time in movies as it was and continues to be a risky field. His boldness paid off as most of productions turned out to be blockbusters. Gundamma Katha, Missamma and Mayabazaar are some of his best productions. Mayabazaar’s visual effects are admired till this date. A honourary award was posthumously named after him.

  5. A. N. R. (1990)

    Akkineni Nageswara Rao was a stalwart who acted in numerous movies. He was primarily associated with Tollywood. He was a good friend of legendary actor Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao. Together, they acted in a lot of blockbusters such as Missamma, Mayabazaar and Gundamma Katha. At a later point of the time, he established Annapurna studios at Hyderabad. His last movie was Manam which was a blockbuster. His son, Nagarjuna, has continued his father’s legacy.

  6. Dr. D. Ramanaidu (2009)

    Dagubatti Ramanaidu was a producer and actor. He founded Suresh Productions in the early 60s’. He holds a Guinness World Record for producing movies in nine languages which is the highest for a producer. He was a farmer initially. In a interview, he described his first production Ramudu Bheemudu as a make or break career move. He never looked back after the success of Ramudu Bheemudu. His sons, Suresh and Venkatesh, have continued his legacy.

  8. K Viswanath (2017)

    K Viswanath is regarded as one of the path breaking film directors in India. He never showed any interest in directing regular commercial flicks rather he made films which remain as classics forever. Shankarabharanam, Swathi Muthyam, Saptapadi, Sagara sangamam are some of the best Telugu movies. His movies won 5 National Awards, he won many awards and rewards including Padma Shri from Government Of India. He was awarded with Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2017.
