Superhit Tamil Films That Released During Diwali Season

Diwali is an auspicious occasion which is celebrated by Hindus' by blasting off fireworks. Due to its significance, moviemakers release their movies and try to reach the skies with the movie's success. Given the stiff competition, only a few manage to beat their competitors and become the champions at the box offices. Another contributing factor for movies' success is the onset of the holiday season. Taking into account the festival's duration, people are more likely to throng the theatres during these holidays. As ‘Kaashmora’, ‘Kodi’ and ‘Kadalai’ spar this Diwali, let's take a look at movies which became the box office hits in the last decade.

  1. Kaashmora (2016)

    Kaashmora is a Karthi starrer which was released with a lot of publicity. The film, which is a horror-comedy, won the Diwali race by beating Kodi at the global box offices. Karthi and Nayantara starred in this super hit. Just in its first week, Kaashmora collected more than Rs. 31 crores while Kodi settled for Rs. 26.50 gross.

  2. Vedalam (2015)

    Ajith's Vedalam was a blockbuster. The action entertainer propelled Thala to new heights and broke a handful of records set by its predecessors. The film revolved around a man who decides to annihilate a crime syndicate for complicated reasons. The film struck a chord with many and it raked more Rs. 1.25 billion.

  3. Kaththi (2014)

    This is another super hit in Vijay's account. The film dealt with a common man who is compelled to end a nefarious man's activities. 'Kaththi' was a smash hit and it was the highest grossing Tamil film of 2014. The action entertainer left many records in its wake. Overall, it collected a mammoth amount of Rs. 1.24 billion.

  4. Pandiya Naadu (2013)

    Vishal scored a hit with 'Pandiya Naadu'. The film was described as an edge of the seat thriller which awed the audiences. Pandiya dealt with a youth who is out to avenge his brother's death. Despite sporting a formulaic story, the screenplay impressed many. The film, which was released across India, collected Rs. 50 crores.

  5. Thuppakki (2012)

    'Thuppakki' was a roaring hit. The film, dedicated to Indian army, was very well-received. The cat-and-mouse between a secret services agent and a terrorist impressed audiences across the world. To describe it in a nutshell, the film dealt with the proliferation of sleeper cells. Overall, the film made a whooping collection of Rs. 180 crores across the world.

  6. Velayudham (2011)

    'Velayudham' was a Vijay starrer which became a hit in 2011's Diwali. Built on an interesting story, the film was well-received by the critics and audiences alike. The film dealt with a vigilante who decides to tackle the anti-social elements. The film set the cash registers ringing in Chennai for it collected more than Rs. 7 crores in seven weeks. It fared well internationally as well. Overall, it collected about Rs. 60 crores in its lifetime.

    'Uttama Puthiran', also written as 'Uttamaputhiran', was a remake of the Telugu runaway hit 'Ready'.     'Aadhavan' was a super hit. Soon after its silver screen debut, the movie received a lot of appreciation for its humour quotient. The movie had Suriya and Nayantara as its lead actors whose on-screen lives become entwined by an interesting reason. The film, which collected about Rs. 75 million, won a handful of Vijay Awards. It's worth mentioning that Suriya bagged the Vijay Best Entertainer Award.

    Despite facing a lot of competition at the box office, 'Vel' claimed the winner's title by beating both 'Azhagiya Tamil Magan' and 'Polladhavan'. Despite Polladhavan's best efforts, Vel performed better mainly because of Suriya and its content. The film was loved by rural audiences and that helped the film greatly. Although Polladhavan also garnered good talk, Vel, riding on Suriya's brand value, clinched the title.
