We all know how successful the combination of Tamil star hero Suriya and director Hari was. Hari who is known for stylish action entertainers is also known to Telugu audience through Saamy and its Telugu remake Bala Krishna’s Lakshmi Narasimha. Singham which was released in Telugu as Yamudu in 2009 was one of the iconic hits in the career of Suriya. It is also the most profitable film in his career.
Apart from being a fan favourite series which has seen all of its films working out commercially, the critical appraisal of the series is also generally positive for trendy and crisp screenplays. Such was the phenomenal success of the film that Bollywood remade it and there too it started not just a franchise but a Cop Universe with multiple heroes(Ajay Devgn is Singham, Ranveer Singh is Simmba, and Akshay Kumar is Sooryavanshi). Talk about power of template filmmaking with innovative narration. And commercial elements too.
Coming to South Indian films, while the first two parts were outright blockbusters with highly positive reviews, the reception for the third part in the series, Si3 was at best mixed. Though the film brought bare minimum profits, the critics and fans commented that director Hari is losing his touch. Add fuel to this, Hari’s Saamy Square with Vikram was a disaster. As he has not seen proper success, the once crazy filmmaker had gone down the pecking order.
It is now heard through our sources that actor Suriya rejected a script from Hari recently. The insiders comment that it’s most probably Singham 4. As Suriya too is going through a lean patch these days, he needs a bumper hit which he thinks Hari cannot deliver. Suriya who’s currently associated with Sudha Kongara’s Soorarai Pottru asked even Vikram Kumar to deliver a commercial hit before commencing their pan-India project. All these indicate that we are not going to see another Singham movie anytime soon. Means, he’s retired? We hope not!
