Soumitra Chatterjee was born in Krishnanagar, Nadia district of West Bengal in 1935. He is considered one of Bengali cinema’s iconic veteran actors who has contributed to Indian cinema in a big way. His acting career spans over five decades where he has worked with innumerable actors, directors and producers. He started his career by bagging the role of Apur in Satyajit Ray’s ‘Apur Sansar’ in 1959. His association with director Satyajit Ray culminated in fourteen classic films, which brought him due recognition and a constant comparison with Bengali cinema’s matinee screen idol Uttam Kumar. The 1960s and 1970s saw the domination of Soumitra and Uttam Kumar at its peak which is considered by most the golden era of Bengali cinema. He went on to do a gamut of roles in films which include the Apu series, ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’, ‘Ashani Sanket’, ‘Sonar Kella’, ‘Joi Baba Felunath’, ‘Ghare-Baire’ and ‘Ganashatru’. He has worked with almost all noted Bengali film directors like Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha, Asit Sen, Ajoy Kar and Tarun Mazumdar, over the years. His journey in films has made him the recipient of many awards and recognitions for his contribution towards Bengali cinema.
