So, the first month of the New Year we all looked forward to has come to an end. On one side, we wonder at the pace the month passed and on the other side, looking into it from a Telugu cinema’s perspective, there have been equally exciting things that happened in this month. From the legends Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna clashing at the box-office after close to 13 years to Naga Chaitanya and Samantha getting engaged, the month was a prettyexciting one. Here we would like to bring forward a report of all the movie releases that happened in the month of January and their performances at the box-office. And for people who are a bit slow in watching movies, you can analyze for yourself which is the movie you missed and which is still worth watching. We will be analyzing basically on three factors, the first weekend collections, average critic ratings and overall verdict of the movie. Here we go!

  • Khaidi No. 150

    Release date : 11-1-2017

    Average rating : 3.2/5

The first movie to hit the Telugu screens in this year was Chiranjeevi’s 150th movie which is also his comeback movie after close to 10 years. The movie shattered the box-office collections and showed the Megastar’s stamina at the box-office. The movie has so far grossed 102 Cr. (as on 30-1-2017) in the Telugu states and stands as the second highest earner in Tollywood after ‘Baahubali’. Though the grace in Chiru was never lost and his comedy timing showed that when boss is back, he is back with a bang. The subject seemed quite serious but was diluted with the commercial elements that were added to make it a wholesome entertainer.

Bottom line : It’s a complete Chiru film. Watch it only for him and nothing else.

  • Gautamiputra Satakarni

    Release date : 12-1-2017

    Average rating : 3.5/5

Another milestone movie that released for the Sankranthi season was Balakrishna’s 100 th film ‘Gautamiputra Satakarni’. The movie opened to positive reviews and got decent collections. In fact, this is the highest grossed movie till date in Balakrishna’s career with even US collections crossing the magic $1.5 M mark. Apart from the well shot war sequences that Krish was lauded for, there was not much insight provided into the history of Satakarni. The movie was well made and carried great visual experience apart from the thumping dialogues penned by Sai Madhav Burra.

Bottom line : Worth a watch! You can give it a shot.

  • Shatamanam Bhavati

    Release date : 14-1-2017

    Average rating : 3/5

Reminding us about our roots and passing on a message to spare some quality time for parents who have given us this great life we boast about, this movie caught the pulse of the audience. It carried – traditions, good music and great family values. Though the director dropped the climax flat on the ground, by then people were already convinced with the story and its proceedings. The US audience too gave a surprise thumbs up for the movie and it crossed the magic figure of $ 2M. With the recent news that the Oscar Motion Picture Arts and Science Academy have requested 'Shatamanam Bhavati' Press Kit for their library as archive, the movie looks to have achieved the biggest winner among the Sankranthi releases.

Bottom line : Defintiely worth a watch (minus the predictable climax).

  • Head Constable Venkataramaiah

    Release date : 14-1-2017

    Average rating : 2.1/5

R Narayanamurthy movies have their own audience and this movie is watchable only if you follow the actor. Based on the age-old concept of corruption that is existing in the system, the treatment was too stereotypical which led to the movie being turned down by the audience. With barely any information available about its collections, ‘Head Constable Venkatramayya’ sank completely among the Sankranthi releases.

Bottom Line : Can let go, nothing to worry

  • Luckunnodu

    Release date : 26-1-2017

    Average rating : 2.3/5

Manchu Vishnu’s first outing in the year 2017 was ‘Luckunnodu’ under the direction of Raaj Kiran of ‘Geetanjali’ fame. With no great twist and turns in the movies, except evoking a few laughs here and there, this movie failed to hit anywhere close to the bull’s eye. The collections for this film were too weak and did not boost its performance in any way. The movie is barely watchable except for those who love comedy and that also is good only in part. It’s month end, unless you really have some extra bucks to burn, you can avoid the movie.

Bottome Line : Can let go of this one, nothing to worry.
