Last week we have analysed the equivalent box office performance and profits and losses for all parties concerned - of Keerthy Suresh starrer Penguin. The producers expectedly benefitted and got excellent profits (better than what they could have made if the film’s released in theatres). At the time, the Eashvar Karthik directorial is just three days old and speculations were rife that the film brought losses for the OTT giant.
It was even commented upon that the film may ring caution bells for future film purchases for the streaming sites. But come another week and after 10 days, the Mahanati actress’ performance in the role of a mother who longs for her missing child created enough interest in the audience and as we said in our own review, Penguin is a one time watch for the star actress performance alone.
Multiple language release and craze due to it being the biggest talked film among the initial wave of direct OTT releases coupled with some terrific visuals, and sounds created by Santhosh Narayan, Penguin is now the highest watched film and trended at the top slots among the OTT searches. It even surpassed Gulabo Sitabo starring Bollywood Shahenshah Amitabh Bachchan and man-of-the-moment Ayushmann Khurrana in terms of number of considerable watch time.
Amazon’s initial estimates of number of Watchings surpassed and the producers are now reaping money per views. All said, in conventional terms - Penguin is a critical flop but a commercial hit. Keerthy Suresh successfully passed her stardom test in her first non-Mahanati female-centric film. Congratulations!
