Telugu Playback Singers Of All Time Who Mesmerize Us With Their Voices

Music and Songs are ubiquitous to all Telugu Movies (based in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) just like other language Indian films from the very beginning. As most of the early Telugu actors are from theatre, almost all of them sang for themselves. But after 1950 actors with little theatre background started to gain footing. Need for singing for the film actors rose. Then, playback singing started, and Telugu playback singers began to gain popularity.

  • Despite few actors who can sing like Chittoor Nagaiah, and S. Varalakshmi, by the 1960s, playback singing became common and play back singers became stars. In recent times, few of the Telugu movie stars sang in their films. Apart from this, Telugu actress Nithya Menen, sings for herself. Mamta Mohandas sang for some of the big hits in Telugu for other actresses and herself.

    Md. Rafi, the famous Bollywood singer sang for N. T. Rama Rao in the 1970s. But it is after 1990, playback singing by non-Telugu singers dominated Tollywood. Among them, Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghoshal are the prominent members. After Padutaa Teeyagaa by Eenadu Television unearthed talented singers who are unknown at the time, Telugu playback singing invited fresh voices. No need to say, most of the Telugu music directors are also singers.

    Telugu singers  not only attained fame at national level, they won may film awards like national awards, South Indian Film Festival awards and Filmfare awards for various languages.     Telugu Female Singers

    Female playback singers like Jikki, Leela, and P. Suseela ruled the roost. In the Telugu female singers, national award winner S. Janaki used to sing with different voices to different actresses. She was recognised among the best Indian playback singers of all time. In later days, Vani Jayaram, S. P. Sailaja and K. S. Chitra were in most demand and attained acclaim from both critics and audience. In recent times, singers like Sunitha, and Geeta Madhuri became crowd favorites.

  • Telugu Male Singers

    Singers like Ghantasala and A. M. Raja started singing for N. T. Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao and other prominent Telugu actors. P. B. Srinivas gained popularity with his melodious voice. In the later generations, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam became, recongised as one of the best Indian singers of all time, was the go-to singer for many of the top stars.
