A blockbuster can be defined as a film (according to Indian box office pundits) as which gets 2 times the investment in terms of nett collections or at least 1.5 times in terms of distributor share. Okay! Leaving aside these things, it is often big stars and rising superstars who bring in big bucks at the box office and have the capacity to drive the audience to the theatres in droves.
When it comes to Indian Cinema, it is Bollywood films that first breached the 100 Cr. And 200 Cr. Clubs. But it is a Telugu movie which had broken the record of being the first ever Indian film to score more than 1000 crores. And it had led the second placed film by a mile until Aamir Khan released Dangal in China to get more bucks (Chinese box office gives just bragging rights of higher gross but not much to the actual producers. Source: S. S. Rajamouli and noted American box office pundit Scott Mendelson).
So, both Dangal and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion sit at the top with more than 1000 Cr. in gross collections. But while Baahubali success was a team effort led by S. S. Rajamouli who deserves majority of the credit, it is often the stars (read: lead actors with box office pull) who bring such humongous numbers.
Among the Indian superstars, only 4 actors who have multiple films with more than 400 Cr. Gross. Among them, the Khans - Aamir and Salman sit at the top of the pile, with 5 films each. Surprisingly in the third place is not a Bollywood Khan, or another box office machine from Hindi cinema but a South Indian star - Prabhas with 3 films.
Currently hailed as the All India Star, Prabhas has broken the curse of Rajamouli heroes who couldn’t repeat the box office collections of Rajamouli film and his Saaho despite receiving overwhelmingly negative reviews grossed over 400 Cr. and turned out an average venture (Hindi version was a blockbuster) overall.
Here are the Indian actors with the highest number of 400 plus Cr. grossers. Check out the list. Some fascinating facts are there.
