Nobody expected Tollywood to reach the titanic numbers similar to Baahubali in 2018 but there is a change in the air and several highly anticipated films were in the line. The biggest movies of the year are expectedly Agnyaathavaasi, Rangasthalam, Bharath Ane Nenu, and Aravinda Sametha. Expectedly they posted great numbers at the box office and set the cash registers ringing in spite of any sort of critical appraisal but there is a big surprise in the end.
Vijay Deverakonda starrer Geetha Govindam shot up at number 4 with more than Rs. 130 crores collection. But three of the biggest star heroes have 100 crore grossers with blockbuster success. All in all 4 films joined the 100 crore club while 8 films grossed more than 50 crores. Creative director Sukumar's first combination with Mega Power Star Ram Charan yielded the biggest hit of not just 2018 but the non-Baahubali industry hit in the for of Rangasthalam. Backed by some stellar performances and great work by the crew, the movie went on to gross more than Rs. 216 Cr. A roaring success indeed.
2. Aravinda Sametha
Young Tiger N. T. R. once again showed his box office might with the Trivikram directorial Aravinda Sametha. The Rayala Seema faction based film went on to post a gross of Rs. 158.6 Cr. and remains one of the highest grossing Telugu movies of all time.
3. Bharath Ane Nenu
Superstar Mahesh Babu stormed back to form with the critical and commercial success of this political thriller Bharath Ane Nenu directed by Koratala Siva where he played the role of a young Chief Minister. This blockbuster posted real blockbuster numbers by grossing Rs. 149.5 Cr.
4. Geetha Govindam
Vijay Deverakonda rose from being a sensational young hero to one of the top heroes of Tollywood by becoming the seventh actor to breach the Rs. 100 crores mark. Geetha Govindam final box office gross stands at a whopping Rs. 130 Cr. It also remains one of the most profitable Telugu movies in the past decade.
It is a surreal experience with Agnyaathavaasi for all the fans. It feels like a lot of time since the release of this film as power Star Pawan Kalyan completely left movies to be a full-time politician. His virtually final film (as of now, we are hopeful for the best, no?) nearly breached the Rs. 100 crore mark despite negative reviews. Even with all the controversies and the negative vibes, Agnyaathavaasi remains the 5th highest grossing Telugu movie in 2018 with a gross of Rs. 94.6 Cr.
6. Naa Peru Surya
Stylish Star Allu Arjun's Naa Peru Surya might have received a mixed response from the critics but still, it went on to gross more than 90 crores. It is his third consecutive film in a row to have this distinction. Naa Peru Surya final box office gross stands at Rs. 92 Cr.
One of the biggest surprises of the year is Mahanati which went on to become a benchmark for biopics in Telugu and one of the best biopics from India. The film proved to be a mighty success both critically and commercially. The Keerthy Suresh starrer directed by Nag Ashwin grossed Rs. 83 Cr. by the time its box office run ended.
Top heroine Anushka Shetty continued her success streak with this female-oriented horror-thriller Bhaagamathie. This G. Ashok directorial received praise from the critics and went on to become the first super hit in Telugu for the year 2018. The final gross of Bhaagamathie stands at Rs. 67.2 cr.
9. Jai Simha
Nata Simha Nandamuri Balakrishna once again proved himself to be the king of Sankranthi movies by posting the first hit for Tollywood in 2018. This K. S. Ravikumar directorial Jai Simha performed particularly well with the family audience and grossed Rs. 49.5 Cr.
10. Tholi Prema
Varun Tej continued his blockbuster form in 2018 with the big success of the romance film Tholi Prema directed by Venky Atluri. The film which borrowed the iconic title from the beloved 1990s movie received high critical acclaim and went on to gross Rs. 45.1 Cr.
