It tells the story of the eponymous highwayman Kayamkulam Kochunni played by Nivin Pauly who was the Kerala equivalent of Robin Hood. It went on to become the second highest grossing Malayalam movie and the second film to break into what was once thought of as the near-impossible 100 crore club. The industry has now its own royal 50 crore club with many movies making its way into it in a rather short span of time. If earlier highest grossing Malayalam movies were merely blockbusters like Narasimham, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, Twenty Twenty, and Classmates, it was Mohanlal's 2015 movie Drishyam which first initiated the prestigious 50 Crore club in Mollywood breaking all the pre-existing records.

1. Lucifer (2019)
Lucifer, the debut directorial of Prithviraj, with Mohanlal as Stephen Nedumpally has shattered many records. It is an industry hit and has crossed 150 crores* at the world box office and is still counting. The political thriller with its power-packed performances and layered writing style were the clear winners. The film became the highest grosser in territories outside Kerala like Tamil Nadu, UAE, US. It may surpass the collection of Mohanlal's and Mollywood's earlier biggie Pulimurugan soon.
2. Pulimurugan (2016)
Mohanlal's Pulimurugan, directed by Vysakh and produced by Tomichan Mulakuppadam of the Mulakupadam Movies, is highest ever grosser in the history of Malayalam cinema. The film which was made on a budget of 25 crores within a few days of release went on to break all the pre-existing records. Pulimurugan grossed 50 crores in just 14 days from India alone and when it completed its phenomenal box office run crossed Rs 130 crores in collection. Till date, Pulimurugan remains to the first ever and the only Malayalam cinema to have achieved this super duper success.

3. Drishyam (2013)
Jeethu Joseph directorial Drishyam which released in 2013 was a family drama cum thriller starring Mohanlal. The film, in many ways, was a precursor of many upcoming Malayalam movies which enjoyed huge popularity and critical as well as commercial success at the box office. Drishyam which was made on a minimal budget of 4.5 Crores smashed all the box office records at the time and collected over 68 Crores at the worldwide box office.
4. Oppam (2016)
Another Mohanlal movie which set the box office on fire. This Mohanlal-Priyadarshan movie crossed 50 crore mark at the worldwide box office within the 40 days of theatrical run. At the time, Oppam was the first ever Malayalam film to make it into the prestigious 50 crore club in such short time span. The movie grossed Rs. 61 crores worldwide.
5. Premam (2015)
Alphonse Puthren's Premam starring Nivin Pauly was another Malayalam movie that pulled all kinds of audience to the theatres. The film went to on collect approximately 33.5 crores, when it completed 25 days at the box office and thwarted the box office collection of Anjali Menon-Dulquer Salmaan movie Bangalore Days by a huge margin. The total collection of Premam is Rs. 60 Crores at the worldwide box office.
6. Two Countries (2015)
Shafi's comedy romantic entertainer Two Countries starring Dileep and Mamta Mohandas is another 2015 film that enjoyed a considerable reception among the Malayalam movie audience across the globe. The film went on to have a good run at all the major centers and fetched a total of Rs. 55 Crores from worldwide when its theatrical came to a halt.
7. Odiyan (2018)
Odiyan, directed by newcomer VA Shrikumar Menon, was based on the folk-lore tale of Kerala and the novel concept pulled the audience to theaters. With Mohanlal as Odiyan, audience knew why he still is the superstar. Odiyan had seen a never-before hype in the history of Malayalam cinema and the marketing strategy helped the collections in many ways. The film grossed a world wide collection of 54 crores.
8. The Great Father (2017)
Haneef Adeni's stylish revenge thriller The Great Father starring Mammootty is one of the top grossing films of 2017. The film released on March 30th in 202 screens in Kerala with 958 shows made its way into the coveted 50 Crore club within a month of its initial theatrical run. The film is one of the top grossing Malayalam films till date with a total collection of 53 crores from across the globe.
9. Njan Prakashan (2018)
Njan Prakashan, the light-hearted satire from veteran Sathyan Anthikad starring Fahdh Faasil was loved by all for its sly dig on the mindset of an average Malayalee. The movie surpassed Fahadh's previous best and became his highest grossing movie. The box office collection stood at 52.3 crore in the final run.
10. Ennu Ninte Moideen (2015)
The gripping tale of starcrossed lovers Moideen and Kanchanamala helmed by RS Vimal starring Prithviraj and Parvathy is one of the highest collecting Malayalam movies of the year 2015. The film swept the box office grossed about Rs 32.67 crore and a net Rs 25.56 crore from Kerala in 42 days and went on to gross a total of 45 Crores at the worldwide box office within the two months of its release. The total worldwide collection of Ennu Ninte Moideen is approximately 52 Crores.
11. Munthirivallikal Thalirkumbol (2017)
Jibu Jacob's Munthirivallikal Thalirkumbol starring Mohanlal and Meena in the lead roles is 2017 family drama which surprisingly made it to the list of biggest hit hits in 2017. The film enjoyed a successful run at the theatres and made a total collection of Rs. 35 Crores from the Kerala box office alone. The worldwide collection of Munthirivallikal Thalirkumbol is estimated to be 52 Crores.
12. Aadhi (2018)
Aadhi is a perfect star vehicle for Pranav Mohanlal the fans have been waiting for. The action-packed fast-paced thriller revolves around a youngster, a musician, who is framed for the murder of the son of a rich man and how he proves his innocence. Aadhi went on to become the first big hit of the year and stormed into the coveted 50 crore club. The final worldwide gross of the movie stands at Rs. 50.3 crores.
13. Abrahaminte Santhathikal (2018)
Abrahaminte Santhathikal starring Megastar Mammootty scored big at the box office. A serial killer thriller made on high standards, the Shaji Padoor directorial opened with good collections. The movie went on to gross Rs. 48 crores by the end of its theatrical run and once again proved the mastery of Mammootty. The film did extremely well in the UAE too.
14. Bangalore Days (2014)
Anjali Menon's youth entertainer flick Bangalore Days which hit theatres with a bunch of young stars like Dulquer, Nazriya and Nivin Pauly in the lead roles went on to become one of the highest grossing Malayalam films of the year 2014. The film surpassed the speed record of Mohanlal's Drishyam by raking 10 Crore in just one week into its release. The film raked Rs 45 Crores from worldwide.
15. Ezra (2017)
Prithviraj horror thriller Ezra which came out at the beginning of 2017 fetched a warm reception at the box office and emerged as one of the highest grossing Malayalam films with a total collection of Rs. 41 Crores from the worldwide box office. Ezra collected nearly Rs. 33 Crore from Kerala alone.
