Top 20+ All Time Highest Grossers At Tollywood Box Office

The second and concluding part of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali turned out to be the biggest thing that happened to Indian cinema in the recent times. A regional movie that was dubbed into Hindi went on to bombard all records in terms of storytelling and collections. It broke the barriers between industries bringing everyone together with a whopping gross collection of Rs. 1707 Cr and a share of Rs. 831.3 Cr. In the Telugu states itself, it collected a share of Rs. 203.6 Cr making it the biggest movie so far in terms of collections. It looks like, this will stay in the top position for quite some time in Telugu cinema. 

The beginning of the expansion of Telugu cinema’s market took a huge leap with Baahubali - The Beginning. Released in 4 languages, the movie’s worldwide gross was Rs. 650 Cr with a share of Rs. 302.3 Cr. In Telugu states alone, the share was a whopping Rs. 113.75 Cr and Baahubali: The Beginning stands as the first movie to crack and enter the Rs. 100 Cr club in Telugu cinema. It was a mammoth success in 2015 and even till date stands as the second biggest grosser in Telugu movie.

Sukumar and Ram Charan struck gold with Rangasthalam. Known for his sophisticated urban movies and heroes with gray shades, Sukumar this time changed everything upside down and delivered a most memorable hit in the form of Rangasthalam. The unique rural entertainer collected a worldwide share of Rs. 120 crores approximately while the worldwide gross is Rs. 210 crores. Rangasthalam not only became a huge hit in India but also scored well in international markets. It grossed around $3.5 Million in the USA.

Megastar Chiranjeevi made a smashing comeback with the movie, Khaidi No 150. Everyone was eager to watch Megastar entertain on the silver screens and the gross collection of Rs. 165 Cr itself was a compliment to that. The share summed up to Rs. 104.6 Cr and once again proved the stamina of Megastar at the Box office.

Mahesh Babu's political entertainer Bharat Ane Nenu received a unanimous blockbuster talk from both the audience and critics. Though the movie gave a much-needed break to Mahesh Babu, it was not able to recover the entire budget of Rs.100 crores. However, it emerged as the biggest hit in Mahesh's career and found a place in the top 5 highest Tollywood grossers. Koratala Siva has directed this film which has Kiara Advani as the female lead. Bharat Ane Nenu collected a gross amount of Rs. 157 crores with a distributor share of Rs. 95 crores approximately.

Young Tiger N. T. R. reaching the peak of his career delivered yet another massive hit in the form of Aravinda Sametha. The Trivikram Srinivas directorial opened to non-Baahubali records and grossed more than 35 crores on its first day. Despite a small dip after the Dasara season, Aravinda Sametha went on to become the 6th movie to deliver a distributor share of Rs. 90 crores. The total worldwide gross of the movie currently stands at around Rs. 145 Cr. (final figures are yet to be available). Trivikram Srinivas moved out of his comfort zone with Aravinda Sametha and made a faction film with a difference.

The Koratla Siva directorial carried an interesting undercurrent message in the movie and it saw for the first time Koratala Siva teaming with Mahesh Babu. Srimanthudu opened to super positive response as well as stupendous Box office collections that grossed Rs. 156 Cr at the end of its run. The movie collected a share of Rs. 87 Cr.

SS Rajamouli’s another gem was Magadheera that gave superstardom to Ram Charan as well. Released in 2009, the movie grossed Rs. 151 Cr (according to today’s Rupee value) with a share of Rs. 83.1 Cr. The movie was the biggest blockbuster of Tollywood at that time and still stands as one of the highest grossers of Telugu cinema.

The movie that saw Jr NTR and Malayalam’s superstar Mohanlal come together under the direction of Koratala Siva was Janatha Garage. With an inspiring subject line, this movie grossed Rs. 134.8 Cr with a share of Rs. 81.3 Cr. This movie also stands as the highest grosser in NTR Jr.’s career.

Released during the packed Sankranthi festival season, this Venkatesh and Varun Tej multi-starrer emerged as the surprise winner at the box office by attracting hordes of movie buffs to the theatres. A clean family entertainer, F2 went on to breach the Rs. 100 crore mark, a first for both Venkatesh and Varun Tej and become one of the most profitable films in Telugu. The movie grossed about Rs. 128.5 Cr. (as of this writing) and a share of about Rs. 78.31 Cr. which places F2 in the top 10 of Tollywood highest earners. F2 is not just a box office winner, it is one of the well-liked films in recent times. 

NTR's triple action entertainer Jai Lava Kusa has impressive Box Office figures despite getting below par reviews from the critics. Tarak was appreciated for his flawless performance with the movie grossing Rs. 133.3 Cr with a share of Rs. 77.07 Cr. worldwide. The movie has surpassed the breakeven point at almost all places.

Atharintiki Daredi stands as Pawan Kalyan’s highest grosser in his career. Grossing Rs. 136 Cr with the share of Rs. 75.3 Cr, this Trivikram directorial created magic not just with the content but also with the box office collections.

It was Boyapati Srinu who gave Allu Arjun the highest figures in his career. The movie grossed Rs. 129 Cr worldwide with a share of Rs. 73.8 Cr making it the highest grossing movie in Allu Arjun’s filmography. Allu Arvind happened to produce this action drama that had Rakul Preet Singh and Catherine Tresa as the female lead.

Allu Arjun’s latest release in the year 2017, ‘DJ - Duvvada Jagannadham’ opened to some mixed talk but the BO collection didn’t seem anything like that. The collections were not just above the mark but have also registered itself as one of the Top 20 highest grossers in Telugu cinema. The movie grossed Rs. 115 Cr with a share of Rs. 72 Cr.

Banking on the rise of the fandom of sensational young star Vijay Deverakonda and a cutesy romantic story, Geetha Govindam went on to become of the highest grossers of all time in Telugu. Vijay Deverakonda became the only 8th Tollywood hero to break into the 100 crore club. Geetha Govindam final worldwide gross stands at a whopping Rs. 130 Cr. and the distributor share the movie collected is Rs. 70.6 Cr. Geetha Govindam scored well with the overseas audience too. It grossed about $2.47 million at the US box office.  

Though the collections for this Pawan Kalyan flick has made it to the Top 20 list, it is sad to quote that this movie still stands as one of the biggest disasters in Pawan Kalyan’s filmography. The movie grossed a total of Rs. 97.5 Cr with a share of Rs. 61.1 Cr but could not recover its theatrical rights also thereby recovering only 70% of its costs.

Gabbar Singh directed by Harish Shankar is the movie that got back Pawan Kalyan on the hit track. The movie was a blockbuster and it grossed a total of Rs. 108 Cr with a share of Rs. 60.5 Cr. A remake of Salman Khan’s Dabangg, the movie was a relief especially for PK fans to watch their star in a complete mass avatar that they have been waiting for long.

Allu Arjun and Surender Reddy teamed up together for Race Gurram that tells the story of two brothers. Woven beautifully in a commercial format, this movie stands as one of Surender Reddy’s best work till date. The result of this was the monstrous BO collections that grossed Rs. 107 Cr with a share of Rs. 59.4 Cr.

Agnyaathavaasi may have been termed as a disaster by critics, but Powerstar Pawan Kalyan's family entertainer slowly moved towards the Rs. 100 Cr. mark at the box-office worldwide. The final box office gross of Agnyaathavaasi is Rs. 94.6 Cr. and the final share is Rs. 57.5 Cr. Despite becoming one of the all-time highest grossers in Telugu Cinema, Agnyaathavaasi distributors suffered huge losses.

Another SS Rajamouli mark film that told the story of a guy who returns as a fly in his next birth to avenge his death after he was separated from his girlfriend was a treat to watch. Rajamouli upped his game from ‘Magadheera’ and made a movie with a ‘fly’ as the lead. Eega also received a National Award and was successful even commercially. It grossed a total of Rs. 105 Cr with a share of Rs. 57 Cr.

Directed by Sreenu Vaitla, Dookudu was the movie that brought back the lost glory of Mahesh Babu. Mahesh struck gold with Dookudu and bounced back as the biggest star in the industry. The movie grossed a whopping Rs. 101 Cr with a share of Rs. 56.7 Cr.

Ram Charan chose to remake Tamil blockbuster Thani Oruvan retaining Aravind Swamy in his role. The movie was handled well by Surender Reddy and it was given a thumbs up by one and all. It grossed Rs. 90 Cr with a total share of Rs. 55 Cr.

Allu Arjun starrer Naa Peru Surya opened to mixed responses from the audience as well as the critics. Though the film opened well, it couldn't continue the same way making it tough to recover the budget. Naa Peru Surya collected a gross amount of Rs. 92 crores while the distributor share stands at Rs. 54 crores approximately.

NTR Jr. and Sukumar teamed together for Nannaku Prematho and as expected the movie did surprise many with its uniqueness. Ending up as an above average flick, the movie grossed Rs. 87.2 Cr with a total share of Rs. 53.2 Cr recovering just little over its theatrical costs.

Nagarjuna and Karthi joined hands together for the light-hearted drama Oopiri which also had Tamannaah alongside. Vamsi Paidipally directed this movie and full marks to him for bringing out a subject like this, even though it has been taken as an inspiration. The movie grossed Rs. 97.8 Cr with a share of Rs. 52.31 Cr.

The multi-starrer that had Mahesh Babu and Venkatesh as the leads, was embraced by audience big time. It went on to garner good reviews and ended up grossing Rs. 95 Cr with a share of Rs. 51 Cr. The movie was produced by Dil Raju and directed by Srikanth Addala.

Shekhar Kammula bounced back hard with the rom-com Fidaa that marked the debut of Sai Pallavi in Telugu alongside Varun Tej. It is also Varun Tej’s first biggest blockbuster grossing Rs. 91.8 Cr with a share of Rs. 49.6 Cr recovering double times the cost.

Mahesh Babu - Murugadoss combination was one of the most awaited movies of 2017. Upon its release, Spyder got negative reviews. But earned huge amounts to become one of the highest grossing Telugu films of all time. The final gross of Spyder is Rs. 93 Cr. and the share is Rs. 49.4 Cr. Despite this, Spyder lost huge amounts.
