Devi Sri Prasad doesn’t need an introduction to the Indian audience, as he is one of the most enigmatic music composers. He has done a handful of big-budget films featuring top stars. He is known for the explosive entertaining numbers and electrifying stage performances. DSP is an all-rounder who has showcased his talents in composing, singing, lyric writing and much more. With his unique personality and versatile package of talents, he has created a brand for himself across India. His total number of films and awards doesn’t define his fame but his stage presence and his unique personality does. As he is celebrating his 37th birthday, we have compiled a list of his talents and factors that made DSP a brand in South Indian cinema.

  1. Energetic beats and trendy fusions

Unlike others, he started his career in an unusual way. Though he had a slow start, DSP won the hearts of the people after Anandam. Apart from the known legendary singers such as SPB and Chitra, he has collaborated with the great voices like Clinton Cerejo, Kunal Ganjawala, Apache Indian, Suraj Jagan, KK, Neha Bhasin and of course Baba Sehgal who brought in great energy to his music. DSP always believed in bringing fresh voices to the industry. These news voices and trendy fusions added energy to his songs. Credits for Baba Sehgal’s success in Tollywood should be given to DSP.

  2. Electrifying stage presence

Unlike other composers, DSP had a different stage presence. Previously, music directors use to come on stage, speak for a while or sing a song and leave. But when Devi Sri Prasad lands on the stage, one cannot expect anything less than a power-packed performance. He is a magician in getting people on their toes and bringing out the energy in them. He has performed on several stages across the world. This musical wizard has taken his stage performances as serious as movies for which he received the title ‘Rock Star’.

Not just in the stage performances, he took this talent a notch higher by choreographing a song in his close friend Sukumar’s debut production Kumari 21F. DSP choreographed for the song “Bang Bang Bangkok”, which came out well and surprised the audience.

DSP took the Telugu item songs to another level, nationwide. He created his own style in making catchy and energetic item numbers. His “Aa ante Amalapuram” from Arya followed by Ringa Ringa in Arya 2, till “Kevvu Keva” in Gabbar Singh, rocked the ears of peppy song lovers. These songs are beyond the language barrier, people love them for chilling beats and wholesome music. Though we all listen to various genres of music, once in a while we come across that moment when we are in a party mood and want to enjoy the time dancing to energetic beats. At such times, there is no better choice than DSP numbers.

DSP is as good with the pen as he is with an instrument or microphone. He had penned lyrics for 11 songs in Telugu. His lyrics and the lyrical values are no less than that of top lyric writers. Legendary writers like Sirivennela and Chandrabose had even, many times, praised his lyrics openly. “Oh Madhu” - Julayi, “Aakasam” - Kalusukovalani, “Nannaku Prematho” - Nannaku Prematho, “Chaila Chaila” - Shankaradada MBBS are few among them. Using simple words and metaphors, DSP conveys what a traditional lyricist conveys using strong literary adjectives.

  8. Choosy works, yet each one's a blockbuster

In spite of being the biggest name among music directors today, DSP hasn’t crossed 50 films. This shows how choosy he is about his projects. He knows that in India, music is always associated with cinema, so picking every movie and exhausting yourself is not going to help. Rather sit back and give your best for the few movies you pick. The movie’s subject has always been the key element that we can find in his album. His music doesn’t divert you from the subject. He just gets you more involved in the movie you are watching. That is what musical scores for a movie needs to be.

  9. Man of many talents

DSP never ceases to surprise his audience with his talents. After the microphone, music instruments, and pen, this time, its camera. We know Rock Star as music composer and dancer but now he is turning into an excellent photographer. Recently he did a photo shoot with Lavanya Tripathi, which is no less than a professional album. This latest photoshoot happened at Devi Sri Prasad’s studio in Chennai and of which he made a video and published it online . DSP himself shot the pictures, edited them and made a video with a background score to it. There is nothing that this genius can’t do.

  10. Our own Bon Jovi with powerful vocals

DSP has a vibrant vocal strength. He crooned many songs in his own composition which turned out to be greatest hits. Unlike many composers who can sing, he has never crooned for his own albums unless it suits him. All the songs that he has sung, are well suited for his voices. In fact, his vibrant tone elevated the beauty of those songs. “Andamaina Bhamalu” - Manmadhudu, “Thathai Thathai” - Manmadha and “Super Machi” - S/O Satyamurthy are some of the best examples of his magical voice.
