Saroj Khan needs no introduction when it comes to choreographing Bollywood songs. Born in 1948 as Nirmala Kishanchand Sadhu Singh Nagpal, Saroj Khan started her film career as a child artist at the age of three in the film ‘Nazrana’ as baby Shyama. Later, she learnt dancing and joined choreographer B. Sohanlal who was already an established dance choreographer in Hindi cinema. She assisted him in many films and featured as a group dancer in many songs. She got her first big break in Sadhna’s directorial debut ‘Geeta Mera Naam’ (1974) but fame eluded her for some years till she got noticed in Subhash Ghai’s ‘Hero’ (1983). From then on she never looked back and choreographed for chartbuster numbers like – ‘Main Teri Dushman’ (Nagina -1986), ‘Hawa Hawai’ (Mr. India - 1987), ‘Chaalbaaz’ and ‘Chandni’ (1989). She later choreographed for many numbers featuring Madhuri Dixit, which include hits like – ‘Ek Do Teen’ (Tezaab - 1988), ‘Tamma Tamma Loge’ (Thanedaar - 1990) and ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’ (Beta - 1992). Her list of other films include ‘Darr’ (1993), ‘Baazigar’ (1993), ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (1995), Taal (1999), Lagaan (2001), ‘Devdas’ (2002), ‘Rowdy Rathore’ (2012), ‘Gulaab Gang’ (2014), ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ (2015). She has choreographed over 2000 songs including Tamil and other language songs too. She has bagged the Filmfare award trophy for best choreography eight times and the National award three times. Here we’ve listed out her ten out of the eleven award winning songs excluding the Tamil film ‘Sringaram’ (2007).
