April was the first month of the second of four quarters of 2017. And in this month, a total of seven Malayalam movies got released. And yes, this includes the Malayalam dubbed version of India's biggest motion picture, Baahubali: The Conclusion. As Vishu was on April 14, the month had big releases of top Mollywood stars, as Vishu releases. Of the seven releases, there were few surprises as at least three of them were received to the opposite of the expectations. Here, we bring the Mollywood Report Card for the month of April and also a performance analysis of the seven movies, among the audience and at the Kerala Box Office.

[NB: As all of these movies are yet to end their theater run, we are not giving any box office collection figures.]

  1. Georgettan’s Pooram - April 01 - Avg. Rating: 2.2/5

Dileep starrer Georgettan's Pooram was the first movie to release in April and it got released on the Fool's day. The movie opened to highly negative reviews from the critics. Even the word of mouth for the movie was mixed. The general remark was that the movie is the same old wine in a new bottle. This was also State Award Winner Rajisha Vijayan's second movie. Though her performance was rated good, she wasn't having much of a role in the movie. Though the movie got a well enough opening, it failed to gain any momentum at the Box Office. It is a below average performer at the BO.

  2. 1971 Beyond Borders - April 07 - Avg. Rating: 2.8/5

The fourth movie in the Major Mahadevan series, 1971 Beyond Borders was made on a high budget and was also having a relatively good pre-release hype. Though the early reviews for the movie were in favor, towards the end of the release day, the critic reviews and word of mouth ranged from average to negative. Riding on the winning streak of Mohanlal at the BO, the movie had a good opening. But it totally failed to capitalize on as it turned out to be a dud. The movie also witnessed a high rate of removal after a week of the theater run.

  3. Puthan Panam - April 12 - Avg. Rating: 3.1/5

Though most of the audience didn't want Puthan Panam to come to theaters as a Vishu release, as Mammootty's The Great Father was having a great run. Yet, this Ranjith movie was a Vishu release. The movie was welcomed with positive to mixed reviews and ratings from the critics. While the word of mouth was largely in favor of the film. Puthan Panam had a very low pre-release hype due to its sudden release but still, it managed to pull in the audience and had a decent opening at the BO. Though the movie couldn't match the success of TGF, it is a hit affair at the Kerala Box Office.

  4. Sakhavu - April 15 - Avg. Rating: 2.9/5

Nivin Pauly was coming with a movie after one year, clubbed with the factor of the communist background of the story, raised the pre-release hype and expectation of the movie to a sky high level. And this thing worked largely against Sakhavu. The movie got mixed reviews, along with a handful of positive reviews. The duration factor also played a negative role, as the general word of mouth was that the movie was dragging a lot. Though it had a good opening with a decent collection in the following days, Sakhavu failed to meet the BO expectations.

  5. Sathya - April 20 - Avg. Rating: 1.5/5

Late director Diphan's last movie, Sathya was the first release for Jayaram in this year. But this action thriller road movie was a colossal disaster at the Kerala BO. The movie got only negative reviews, with many critics even questioning the idea behind making such a movie. Word of mouth was also completely unfavorable. Sathya found it hard to have even a mention worthy performance at the Kerala BO over the first weekend, let alone the opening day.

  6. Rakshadhikari Baiju Oppu - April 21 - Avg. Rating: 3.1/5

Rakshadhikari Baiju Oppu can very well be marked as the first sleeper hit of 2017 in Malayalam. This Biju Menon starrer, though released without any hype, was warmly welcomed by critics with almost all calling it as a proper feel good movie with a ton of nostalgia attached to it. The movie received overwhelming word of mouth, despite it having a run time close to 3 hours. The movie had a good opening at the BO and was able to cope with the Baahubali 2 mania.

  8. Baahubali: The Conclusion (Malayalam) - April 28 - Avg. Rating: 4/5

Do we really need to say anything about this movie and how it was received by the critics, common audience and the Box Office? Baahubali: The Conclusion (Malayalam) has so far wiped out the name of all other films from the record book of Kerala BO, for the inaugural day and first weekend. The audience is simply loving this masterpiece of SS Rajamouli. Even after being a dubbed movie, the family audience is pouring into theaters with most of the centers adding shows at even 3 in the morning, which are ending up as houseful ones.
