Check Out Bollywood’s Report Card For The Month Of January, 2017

We are done with the first month of the year of 2017 in Bollywood. The month of January saw about fifteen Bollywood films releasing and as usual, it was the Republic Day week releases which grabbed the headlines. The big clash was that of ‘Raees’ vs ‘Kaabil’ which set the tone for big Bollywood releases of 2017. As per trade pundits, the year seems to have started off well and with a lineup of few more big films in February and March to follow the top slot is up for grabs. Though a total number of 15 movies released but we look into the prominent Bollywood releases of January 2017 and their box-office performances to know how well they fared.

(Note: We have not taken into account dubbed movies and lesser known B or C grade movies released in the month of January 2017)

  1. Kaabil (25 January) Avg Rating - 3.2

    Hrithik Roshan finally heaved a sigh of relief after his ‘Kaabil’ hit the screens on 25 January. Produced by Rakesh Roshan and directed by Sanjay Gupta, this action thriller was a slow starter but gained popularity through word of mouth and has managed to collect a good 118.05 Cr at the end of its second weekend.

  2. Prakash Electronics (6 January) Avg Rating - 1.5

    This small budget flick with small time actors was the first release of Bollywood in 2017. Long in the waiting for a theatrical release, ‘Prakash Electronics’ was directed by Manoj Sharma which had actors like Hemant Pandey, Manoj Pahwa, Sanjay Mishra, Vrajesh Hirjee and Chandrachur Singh. The flick was a non-starter from day one and vanished without a trace earning about 4 lacs.

  3. Amir Salman Shahrukh (6 January) Avg Rating – 0

    This small budget film too became the first flick to be released in 2017. Directed by Iqbal Suleman, this comedy flick was produced under the banner of Screenshot Media and Entertainment Groups and revolved around three lookalikes of Bollywood's important personality namely Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan. The flick was a washout as one couldn’t find out how much it managed to earn.

  4. OK Jaanu (13 January) Avg Rating - 2.7

    Director Shaad Ali yet again came up with a remake of his mentor Mani Ratnam’s Tamil superhit ‘OK Kanmani’ which starred Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen in the lead. The Bollywood version had Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor reprising the respective lead roles. The film based on live-in relationship managed to garner just Rs. 23.57 Cr from its box-office collections.

  5. Haraamkhor (13 January) Avg Rating - 2.9

    An unusual love triangle which involves two young school going students infatuated towards each other till a married professor comes into the girl’s life. ‘Haraamkhor’ was directed by Shlok Sharma and starred Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Shweta Tripathi in the lead roles. It managed to earn a mere 1.34 Cr only.

  6. Coffee with D (20 January) Avg Rating - 1.7

    This Vishal Mishra directorial got into a bit of controversy as the story involved a known gangster getting interviewed by popular journalist Arnab Goswami. Though the makers of 'Coffee with D' claimed the story to be fictitious, it finally got a release. Starring Sunil Grover, Zakir Husain, Dipannita Sharma and Anjana Sukhani in the main cast, the film collected a paltry amount of 0.62 Cr.

  8. Majaz: Ae Gham-e-Dil Kya Karun (20 January) Avg Rating - 2.0

    The film was a biopic on the life and times of famous Urdu Poet, Majaz Asrarul Haq Lakhnavi. Directed by Ravindra Singh, 'Majaz - Ae Gham-e-Dil Kya Karun' depicted the poet’s rise to fame, love for a girl, his downfall and lonely death. The film starred Priyanshu Chatterjee, Rashmi Mishra, Kajal Raghwani, Neelima Azim and Anas Khan which ended up earning a dismal 0.03 lacs in all.

  9. Raees (25 January) Avg Rating - 3.2

    Despite all the controversies surrounding it, the eagerly awaited Shahrukh Khan starrer ‘Raees’ finally arrived and delivered the much needed hit for King Khan. Directed by Rahul Dholakia it also starred Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Mahira Khan. Till its second weekend ‘Raees’ had managed to collect a worldwide gross of Rs. 259.42 Cr.
